FROM PASTOR RUSSELL Lent is a wonderfully rich season of the church year.  I look forward to Ash Wednesday, which is February 14.  We will gather for worship at noon and 7:00 for the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.  Th e season of Lent began as a season for people to intensely prepare for baptism at Easter.  Th ese inquirers had been through a lengthy process of formation called the catechumenate (which is related to the word “cat-echism”).  It was a time of instruction to learn about Scripture, how to pray, worship, and serve as Christ’s disciples in the world.  Th e fi nal few weeks before Easter, the church decided to use this time as a time of fi nal preparation and refl ection.  God is about to do something wonderful in you through the death and resurrection of Christ at baptism.  Baptism is God’s way of making a covenant with us.  In the waters of baptism God claims us as beloved daughters and sons.   For the baptized, then, Lent is a way to remember God’s covenant promise to love us.  And so while the cross is a very important way of remembering that, there are lots of passages in Scripture that talk about God’s promises to humanity.    During this year’s Lenten season, we will be focusing on God’s covenant on Sunday mornings.  Here are the Old Testament readings for Sunday during Lent:   First Sunday of Lent – February 17 Genesis 9:8-17 – God’s covenant with creation after the fl ood.   Second Sunday of Lent – February 24 Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 – God’s covenant with Abraham and Sarah

changes their lives (and ours!) forever.  Th ird Sunday of Lent – March 4 Exodus 20:1-17 – God’s covenant with Moses and Israel in the Ten

Commandments. Fourth Sunday of Lent – March 11 Numbers 21:4-9 – When Israel complains about being in the wilder-

ness, there is both judgment and healing as Moses lifts up a serpent.   Fifth Sunday of Lent – March 18 Jeremiah 31:31-34 – God promises to make a new covenant with Israel

that is written on the heart.   Th is Lent is a great time for us to think about what it means that God made a covenant with us.  It’s a great time to also ask how it’s going in our own spiritual lives as we worship, pray, read Scripture, and do acts of service.  What things are getting in my way as I seek to follow Jesus and his cross?  Are there things that I need to give up or add to my spiritual life as a reminder of God’s great love for me in Jesus?

Christmas Gift Shop at Cristo Rey, stocked with gifts from you

Th e Diamond Plus Luncheon was held on Tues-day, December 5, 2017, with over 85 in atten-dance at the church Fellowship Hall. Anne Frank Academy provided entertainment – three young girls playing several Christmas songs on their vio-lins. It was a great day. Th ose in attendance also had a Christmas Quiz to complete. I want to fi rst thank Shirley Jonas(past lun-cheon coordinator) for allowing me to handle this year’s luncheon. She told me all I needed to know to make this day a huge success. We were so sorry she could not attend because of her health. I also wish to thank those who helped prepare the food, decorate the tables, serve the food, and just being church members that volunteered to assist at this luncheon. I could not have accom-plished this without you all. Th ank you so much from the bottom of my heart: Linnell Brewton, Mary Jo Goldenbaum, Linda Hanson, Kathy Hartman, Barbie Lowe, Mona McQuien, Kathy Newman and Susie Smith. And I appreciate the monetary sponsorship from Th rivent and Zion Lutheran, plus several individual members for their donations.I look forward to seeing all those 75 or older at the December 2018 Diamond Plus Luncheon.Love, Carolyn Pfeiffer Diamond Plus Coordinator, 2017

I am always blown away by the generosity of Zion and it’s community. Th is was one of the most amazing things that you have ever done. I thank you again for the lovely gifts and food you brought when coming to the Nativity Narra-tive during this holiday season. What you didn’t know was how much of an impact these items

CARDS, LETTERS AND E-MAILS

To our friends at Zion: Nelson and I wish to thank you for the memories and friendships made during these years of membership. We wish we could take all of you with us to Florida! We will do as we did here, fi nd a local church and make new friends with similar values, as that’s been a proven method for us. We hope those of you who travel will remember to look us up or let us know you’ll be nearby if in Florida. Gratefully and God Bless, Lindsay Sinn & Nelson Domacassé Th ank you for the prayers, calls, visits, and get well cards while I was recuperating from my re-cent heart attack. It was greatly appreciated. I am doing well and hope to be in church at Zion soon.Your friend in Christ, Mona McQuien

made for the NEW Cristo Rey Food Pantry and Help Center at Christ the King Church, located in the poorest zip code of San Antonio. Th e staff there was so over-whelmed, that they didn’t know until we showed up that there would be enough to give 500 children (which was what was needed) a Christmas that they would have never gotten or even hoped to have received. Please know that not only did the food go to their nourishment (that was needed), but the toys put smiles om their faces, their parents faces, the staff ’s faces, those who delivered the goods’ faces and on and on. Th e money we collected at our little bake sale also went to give them a party with cookies and cocoa and coff ee for the parents – again something they would have never even dreamt of.God Bless you Zion, and thank you!Sammy, Rob, and the entire Zion Theatre Crew

To the members and administration at Zion Lutheran Church A massive thank you to everyone who bought canned goods and toys to the Nativity event on December 15. Your amazing support helped pro-vide meals and Christmas gifts to children living in one of the poorest zip codes in San Antonio. Th e toys and goods were distributed to Cristo Rey of Hope Food Pantry, located at Christ the King Church on the west side of San Antonio. Th e Cristo Rey of Hope pantry serves over 300 families and over 1,000 community members on a monthly basis. Most of the children living near the food pantry will go without toys this Christmas season and many will go without three meals a day. Th anks to the support of the members of Zion community, fi ve hundred children will be provided toys and gifts. Th ank you all for sharing the love and joy of Christmas with many children who go without in the community. Th ank you,Amy Stage

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Th ank you, oh thank you for your thoughtfulness, your prayers and your generosity for the sale of Holy Cross. You cannot know how much comfort, strength and support you have brought to us. We are temporarily in a new location in the midst of downtown Rockport. A very generous family has given us free use of the building for as long as we need it. We are discovering that may be at least two more months. Th e demolition crew has completed their work at our church site. Th e next step is a few front and then a new roof. Th en work can begin of reconstructing the entire inside of the building. Your most graciousu response to our need is, believe me, so greatly ap-preciated. As we give heartfelt thanks, we ask your continued prayers. God bless you. With love, Pastor George HaynesHoly Cross Lutheran Church, Rockport Texas
