AT THE ZION CENTER

Meditative Walking with Music by Neal Biggers

Meditative walking is practiced in many spiritual traditions, including Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu and others.

Walking labyrinths, like the 800-year-old stone labyrinth inside Chartres Cathedral in France, is experienced by many as a way of drawing closer to God through prayer and meditation. Part of the daily devotion of Christian monks and nuns through the centuries involves walking around the cloister--a roofed walkway around an enclosed garden--while reflecting on scripture passages or praying.

Near the town I visit in Mexico there is a walking trail that zigzags up a mountain. There is a little chapel on the mountain overlooking the town, and along the trail there are fourteen “stations of the cross” representing Jesus’ encounters and experiences on his journey to his cross. Every day people walk this hot, dusty trail, some to meditate or pray, some for physical exercise, and some just to enjoy the

rustic natural beauty and views of the town and lake below and the mountains all around. I walk it most days when I’m there, for all of the reasons above.

These days the many health and healing benefits of combining mindfulness and walking are increasing recognized and studied. Breath-walking is a branch of yoga that focuses on particular breathing techniques while walking for physical and mental transformation.

Beginning in April you will have the opportunity to do this type of mindful and meditative walking here in Zion’s beautiful sacred space. I will be playing meditative organ music, alternating with silence, throughout the hour. We hope to occasionally involve other musicians.

We have a designated pattern for people to walk down the center and side aisles of the sanctuary. The simple, repetitive pattern is part of what makes this type of walking work. You are welcome to stop by anytime during the noon hour and walk/meditate for five minutes, thirty minutes, or for the whole hour, as long as you want. You may also alternate sitting meditation with walking if you prefer. Printed guides will be available if you would like examples from various traditions of ways to clear or focus your mind while walking.

You might consider having lunch downstairs at Common Ground Community Kitchen before or after your walk, or place a to-go order to pick up when you finish.

Common Ground Community Kitchen Lunch continues to be served beginning at 11:30

Mondays thru Thursdays! “Pay what you can.”

Second Tuesday Song Circle April 10th -- 6 to 8 PM.

NIA DANCE: The Spirituality of Neuromuscular Integrative Action

by Sonia Waters

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience." - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

As Spiritual beings on a human journey, we are whole and complete and ever growing, developing and transforming towards who we are created to be.

NIA offers a practice and process for entering into an embodied conscious awareness of self, a deeper realization that our body is the vessel we use to inter-act with life. This movement (dance) is a way we connect with the body, and being conscious in the body is how we bring an embodied presence to the world.

Everything felt, seen, experienced, on every level (mind, body, emotions, spirit) is translated through the body into the physical realm. Our bodies hold a lot of memory. awareness and wisdom.

By Dancing, our body’s stories come into focus, we can recognize what may need our attention and love and bring about healing. When we can listen to our bodies, without judgment, we unravel constricted energies and deepen our connection to our Authentic self; which is who we are created to be.

And.... NIA Dance is fun, energizing and it keeps you fit.

You have the opportunity to experience NIA right here at the Zion Center on Saturday mornings from 9-10am and Sunday afternoons from 4-5pm Come join the journey!

The Congregational Church of West Medford (UCC) turned over a new leaf for Palm Sunday. Along with congregations from every major denomination, the West Medford congregation switched to fairly-traded eco-palm fronds for their annual celebration of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem in the days before his crucifixion.

“God created all that is and we believe that it is our responsibility to care for creation, to preserve it and sustain it as best we can,” said Rev. Wendy Miller Olapade, the pastor of the church.

More than 300 million palm fronds are harvested each year for U.S. consumption alone — most of them for Palm Sunday, but also for floral displays for church-related events. Many people do not realize that some forms of harvesting the ‘strip palms’ that we are used to seeing on Palm Sunday actually damage the trees. There is also a history of overharvesting palm fronds driven by the low wages being paid to the workers. The purchase of these eco palm fronds, which are harvested in a manner that protects the forest, insures that they will be available for years to come.” -www.medfordchurch.org
