The Zion United Methodist Men (ZUMM) The Zion United Methodist Men (ZUMM) meet on the last Tuesday of each month at 6:30 in the church social hall for a dinner prepared by the members. The cost of the dinner is $5.00, and reservations are needed so that enough food can be prepared. After dinner, there is a short business meeting and a program. All men are welcome. For more information or to sign up for dinner call ZUMM President George Stephenson. The purpose of ZUMM is to create a Christian fellowship with Zion’s men through activities that benefit our church, the youth and outside mission needs. Fund raisers and events include: The Barney Clark Golf Tournament, a seafood dinner, the fall Bazaar, a family picnic, a Christmas dinner, and other events to support our church and community. Activities and programs supported by ZUMM are: Heart Havens, Camp rainbow, Zion’s youth program including annual scholarships given to deserving Zion high school graduates who are continuing their education, Hunters for the Hungry, PORT, Vacation Bible School, the Wesley Foundation, Upper Room Ministry, York County Shop with a Sheriff, Troop 123 BSA, and Pack 155 CSA. A New ZUMM program is Handyman Assistance. ZUMM offers handyman assistance to those who need help with repairs or small projects around the house—senior citizens, widows, single moms, and persons with physical handicaps. If you need this kind of help call the church office at 898-7417. Cleaning Buckets Project Heavy rains during the spring and summer brought devastating flooding to parts of West Virginia. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) sent out an urgent call for help, including cleaning buckets. Our Virginia Conference UMM President, Andrew Kissell, put out a call for all UMM groups to step up and heed the call. Zion UMM did just that through the excellent leadership of their president George Stephenson. Below is a letter from George on how they made it happen. Zion United Methodist Men went to work on July 26, 2016. Our District’s men’s groups were informed of a great need for these buckets and Zion decided to go to work. We presented the materials list to Grafton True Value (Yorktown, VA) and purchased all of the supplies through the store. The cost per bucket was just under $46.00. Zion UMM used funds raised primarily through its annual golf tournament in May, a seafood dinner in September, and some other fundraising throughout the year to make the purchase. At its July meeting, the men all lined up and began the assembly process for the buckets. A total of 20 cleaning buckets were made. The project was fun and rewarding for all of the men at Zion. It was also nice to be able to include men of all ages on this project.
