Zion’s Messenger September 2019 Dear Zion Members and Friends, The Book of Isaiah begins in chapter one by exposing false religion that had the right form and ritual but no true sincerity. Chapter 58:6-9 gives the other side: the spiritual work that God prefers. “Is this not the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; and your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and God will say, Here I am.” How would that be for a God response time? This passage identifies the holy work that God’s people should be about doing. God wants us to care for our neighbors in need. God wants us to work for justice in the world. Do you need guidance and direction in your life? Come and join our community of faith. Join us in doing God’s Work. On Sunday, September 8, Zion Lutheran Church returns to its’ school year Sunday morning schedule: worship opportunities at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Our Sunday school programs begins at 9:15 with an inspirational Rally Day program planned for September 15. On September 8th, “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday nationally in the ELCA, our youth will help us recognize the work of our community’s first responders by providing a meal. (You can sign up and help with it) Our Quilt Knotters group has made 100 drawstring school bags to be filled with school supplies for children around the world (through Lutheran World Relief). We will attempt to fill 100 bags after the meal is served. (You can help with this project, too). Ours is a community that collaborates well, to meet the needs of others. Community Garden vegetables are planted and harvested. Children’s care items are collected for young moms. Shoes are passed on to those without them. Berks County farm heritage is preserved and shared. Homeschoolers, scouts, and those battling addiction all meet in our building each week. A solitary person will spend some time in reflection walking the labyrinth. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the Saturday, November 23 50th Anniversary of the Building celebration. God is with us in this place! PB

The Book of Isaiah begins in chapter one by exposing false religion that had the right form and ritual but no true sincerity. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and God will say, Here I am.” How would that be for a God response time? Zion’s WELCA Bazaar is coming

November 9!

Plans are already being made to insure a successful bazaar. Do you realize how many programs the Bazaar benefits? The first priority is always Bear Creek Camp scholarships so our children can experience living faith every day in a camp setting. Some other projects are upgrades for our building such as the new tile floors in the women’s restrooms and a new higher toilet and outreach programs for those in need outside our congregation.

You can help make this event successful by making a themed raffle basket (new items please), baking your favorite sweet treats, contributing flea market items, potted plants, or ingredients for those who like to bake as a group. The day of the bazaar, helpers are needed to sell all the food and

merchandise. Everyone can help by bringing their friends and shopping the day of the bazaar from 9-1.

COUNCIL CORNER

We finished July in the Red $36,781.97. The monthly income was $12,299.91 and the monthly expenses were $16,720.61. We spent $4,420.70 more then we brought in. We want to thank everyone who continues to contribute to the Capital fund. We are over half way toward reaching our goal. We would like to thank Paul Gruber for his time and knowledge share regarding the current water system. We will be moving forward with the ultraviolet light because the DEP stated we need it. If you are at the church for a meeting at any time during the week, please stop in the kitchen and turn on the cold water, and let it run for 10-15 minutes. This will help to flush the system. The fire alarm system continues to be a concern. Property has been working with Kistler O'Brien to replace different parts, they are trying to trouble shoot the issue. We are being charged a monthly monitoring fee of $40.00. Kistler O’Brien did not charge us for the last service call. There continues to be open seats on Council. Please see Wanda Hoherchak or any other council member if you are interested in joining. The position would be until the Annual meeting in January. If you have ever considered

coming onto council, this is a good way to try it for a few months. Respectfully Submitted Wanda Hoherchak, Council President

The parking lot flea market community outreach event scheduled for Saturday; September 21st has been cancelled. Please save your flea market items for this year's WELCA bazaar on November 9th. thank you.

Report on the ELCA Assembly: August 5-10, 2019 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

• Julie was elected to be a voting member at the synod assembly in 2018. I was elected as an alternate. I decided to attend and volunteer. On Wednesday, July 31, Bishop Zeiser asked me to be a voting member as someone had a medical emergency to deal with. Julie and I drove to Milwaukee as we wanted to visit our parents both going and coming. Our mileage was covered (up to $350) by the assembly.

• The Assembly was held at the Wisconsin Convention Center in Downtown Milwaukee. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Hotel connected by overhead skyway to the convention center. Many meals were provided at the convention center-cafeteria style. Each voting member received a VISA card with $125 on it to cover the meals which were not provided, including all breakfasts. Voting members were on their own to use the hotel restaurant or local establishments.

• As the assembly chose to be “paperless” to help the environment, we were issued an I-Pad to use during the assembly. All materials were on the ELCA Assembly Guidebook. Voting members used handheld voting devices in which each voting member inserted their card w/chip in order to vote. We voted about 120 times during the week following Robert’s Rules of Order and Parliamentary Procedures. 4 Large video screens were upfront. The assembly was live-streamed on the website.

• 1517 Media gave out free samples each day so I was able to collect a set of the new pamphlets which are well done. I also saved the daily worship service bulletins so that I could remember some new hymns. Worship with 1,500 people in a large room was inspiring and well done. Julie and I participated in the assembly choir, singing on Wednesday and Friday.

• I enjoyed re-connecting with some old friends during the assembly: Pastor Greg and Brenda Williams from Hendersonville, NC-my best friends from my seminary days; Charles Downs, Jr., now 47 years old, an attorney and the Vice President of the Virginia Synod-he was 13 years old in my first parish in Roanoke, VA; Pastor Andreas Teich, now pastor in Bay City, Michigan, who was ordained with me in Ocean City, NJ in May, 1986- whom I haven’t seen since that night 33 years ago. He recognized me first.

• The Campaign for the ELCA, over the past 6 years had a goal of raising $200 million. The campaign raised $250 at its conclusion! We enjoyed the celebration reception at the Milwaukee Art Museum overlooking Lake Michigan on Wednesday evening. Almost half of the funds raised were for ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response.

• The Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod had the largest delegation at the assembly (28). We sat together in 2 rows near the rear of the assembly hall. Bishop Zeiser sat on the end and, at times distributed some necessary paper ballots. We all ate supper together on Thursday night. 112 positions including the ELCA Secretary were filled. Pastor Chris Boerger retired as secretary and his immediate assistant was elected (Sue) after 5 ballots. Baseball fan that I am, Julie and I were able to grab a city bus and make it to Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, on Friday evening. It is a beautiful stadium with a roof that can close in bad weather. (As you may know Milwaukee is battling for the NL Central Division lead with the Cubs and Cardinals. PB
