Zipper-Back Pouch (In-the-Hoop)

Craft a charming zipper pouch to carry your treasures! These adorable creatures stitch up in-the-hoop,with a zipper incorporated on the back for a perfectly polished finish. Follow along to create your own!

Project Needs & Notes:

- 1/2 yard quilter's cotton- Small pieces of quilter's cotton (for applique)- All-purpose zipper (11" + zipper for small size, or 13" + zipper for large size)- Elastic, cord, or ribbon (for strap)- Scissors- Masking tape- Temporary spray adhesive- Tear-away stabilizer- Seam ripper

Designs featured in this tutorial include: - X14239, Fantastic Fox Zipper Pouch (In-the-Hoop)

Finished size:About 5"x7" for large size; about 4"x6" for small size

Special notes:As the last color stop of file "b" sews the "a" and "b" pieces together, make sure to completely embroiderfile "a" before embroidering file "b".

In-the-hoop designs are speciallydigitized to be embroidered andcompleted right in the hoop.

This zipper pouch in-the-hoopdesign has five files. One is an

embroidery file. The other threeare dieline files marked with theletters DL. Dielines are used tocut the fabric to the right shapeand size.

Open the dieline files withembroidery software and printthem. If you do not haveembroidery software, WilcomTrueSizer is a free program touse.

To begin preparing the fabricpieces, cut two rectangles out ofthe main fabric that are twice aswide as the back (file "a") top andbottom pieces.

Press the folded edge and spraythe wrong side of the fabric withtemporary adhesive to hold thefolded fabric together. Adheringthe two folded sides together willhelp prevent shifting and makethe pieces easier to cut.

Next, spray the back of the backpaper dieline pieces (file "a") withtemporary adhesive and smooththem onto the right side of thefabric, matching one edge up withthe folded side. It can be helpfulto label to pieces so that theydon't get mixed up.

Cut the two front pieces out onthe fold and fold up one corner ofthe paper dieline. Keeping thepaper on the folded pieces willhelp to keep track of which sideis the front side (the side withpaper is the front).

For the front pieces (file "b"),simply spray the paper dielinewith temporary adhesive andsmooth it onto the right side ofthe fabric. Then cut out theshapes and remove the paper.

Now that the fabric pieces areready, hoop a piece of tear-awaystabilizer tightly. Madeira E-ZeeTear 1.5 oz. or Floriani TearawayMedium are good choices. Thosebrands are more fibrous, lesspaper-like, and will tear morecleanly.

Load the back embroidery file(file "a") onto the machine, andbegin to embroider the design. The first thing to sew will be the"zipper dieline". This marks theplace where the zipper will beplaced on the stabilizer.

The zipper dieline sews a boxwith a centerline through themiddle. To place the zippercorrectly, close the zipper andmatch up the center of the zipper(the teeth that zip and unzip) withthe sewn centerline. Make surethe wrong side of the zipper isagainst the stabilizer and tape itin place. The zipper should hangover on both sides and will betrimmed away later.

Once the zipper is taped down, place the hoop back on themachine and embroider the"zipper tackdown" step. This willadhere the zipper to the stabilizerand hold it in place for theremainder of the design. Don'tworry if it sews over the tape. Itcan be easily torn away fromaround the stitches.

Carefully remove the tape andembroider the "top front piecedieline" step. This will sew anoutline where the top front fabricpiece will go.

Spray the back side of the foldedtop front fabric piece withtemporary adhesive (the side w/opaper). With the folded edgealongside the zipper, smooth thefabric piece inside the sewndieline shape.

Continue to embroider the "topfront piece tackdown" step.

Repeat the previous steps toembroider the "bottom front piecedieline". Place the fabric pieceand embroider the tackdown.Again, make sure that the foldededge is against the zipper. Oncethe design has finishedembroidering, trim away theexcess stabilizer from around theback piece. Do not cut the zipper.

Once the back piece (file "a") iscompleted, hoop another piece oftear-away stabilizer and load thefront (file "a") onto the machine. The first thing to embroider willbe the dieline for the main fabricpiece.

Place the fabric piece in the sewndieline, and embroider thetackdown step.

For the raw edge appliquepieces, embroider the dieline andlocate the "branches" that extendaround the sewn shape. Theseshow where the fabric edgeshould be placed, and allow forthe stitching to be more hiddenunder the fabric piece.

Spray the backside of theapplique piece with temporaryadhesive, and place it so theedges of the fabric match up withthe tips of the dieline "branches".

Embroider the tackdown for theapplique piece.

Repeat the last step to embroiderthe dieline, place the fabric piece, and embroider the tackdown forall the applique pieces. Somedesigns have more appliquepieces than others, so simplyfollow the color change sheet toembroider them.

After the applique pieces are allin place, the inner details of thedesign will sew. Follow the colorchange sheet and stop beforesewing the "finishing seam".

Before sewing the "finishingseam", stop the machine andremove the hoop withoutunhooping the design.

To add a wrist strap, cut a pieceof cord 8"-12" long. Fold it in halfand place the looped end on theinside of the pouch (so the rawedges hang over the edge). Tapeit in place over the embroidereddetails, and make sure the loopwill not get caught in the finishingseam.

For a shoulder strap, cut a pieceof cord 30"- 50" long. Fold up themajority of the strap and tape itas flat as possible in the center ofthe shape. Next, tape the twoedges in place so that the rawedge is outside the zipper pouchon the stabilizer.

On the back piece (file "a"), it isvery important to move the sliderof the zipper (also called the pulltab) to the center of the design. This will leave the zipper abouthalf open and will allow the sliderto be a part of the zipper pouch,so it can be opened and closed. If you do not move the slider, thepouch will be permanently stuckclosed, so do not forget!

Next, lay the back piece (file "a")with the half open zipper on topof the hooped front piece (file "b")with the right sides together.Match up the outer edges, andtape the back piece in placearound all four sides of thedesign.

Place the hoop back onto themachine, and embroider the final"finishing seam step. This willbind all the layers together, andcreate the final shape of thepurse.

Once the design has finishedsewing, tear away the excessstabilizer from around the design.Carefully remove the stabilizerfrom the back of the front side ofthe design to give it moreflexibility.

Repeat the previous step toremove the stabilizer from thebackside of the back piece aswell to uncover the zipperopening and make the bag moreflexible.

After all the tear-away stabilizerhas been removed, trim away theexcess fabric by cutting aroundthe finishing seam. Only leaveabout a 1/4" of seam allowancearound the shape for best results. Also cut both sides of the zipperoff about 1/4" away from thefinishing seam.

Finally, turn the pouch right sideout through the open zipper.Remove any tape and press theedge.
