Summer TimeWe looove curves - and we love relaxing in the summer sun, feeling the warm summer breeze. This is the season for bare legs and walking bare feet in sandals or high heels – and for
hanging out with friends and family – maybe throwing a cosy garden party for which you’ll find plenty of inspira-tion in this issue. We are happy to present lots of hot new, colour-ful, zesty and light sum-mer clothes for both daily wear and party time – rain or sunshine – heat wave and chilly summer nights.Besides dressing our professional and beauti-ful models we have also
found some ordinary customers and dressed them in our latest collection. And we have had help for our fitguide from three of our gorgeous staff – a sales trainee, a sales assistent and a sales manager – who have volunteered to show us their parti-cular curves. We look forward to the time of the year when clothes are not just something you wear to keep warm, and we hope for a long and lovely summer.

Your hair has to endure quite a lot over the summer, and your hair cannot repair itself.
You must protect it from dehydration to maintain its richness
5 tricksfor healthy, sexy summer hair
sunscreen for your hairIf you spent a lot of money on hair dye, you need to protect it to keep the colour from fading and looking dull. There are several good UV-products for your hair, but a hat, a pretty scarf or a tight bun can also function as natural sun- and dye-protec-tion.Color Max, Pureology
Wear a maskGive your summer hair some loving care by using a quality hair mask once or twice a week. This will restore strength and gloss.

Bleached á la surfer girlNaturally blonde hair in the style of Californian surfer chicks is always sexy, whether fair-haired or brunette. The look comes naturally if you stay out in the sun, but try rubbing a bit of lemon juice into your hair before heading out – this old trick is supposed to accelerate the bleaching process.

'Because of her BODY – which was CURVY by Hollywoods standard on
very thin movie stars – the face received all the compliments'
23Zizzi Magazine
KateWinslet
– more than just a pretty face
For many years Kate Winslet was just 'a pretty face'. She was the face for make-up giant Lancôme, the face for American Express, and because of her body –which was curvy by Hollywoods standard on very thin models – the face received all the compliments:
'I will tell you that when I was 'heavy', people would say to me—and it was such a backhanded compli-ment—they would say, ‘You’ve got such a beautiful face,’ in the way of, like, ‘Oh, isn’t it a shame that from the neck down you’re questionable’,' Kate Winslet told the American magazine Glamour in March of last year. The occasion? Kate had just been voted Most Glam by the readers of Glamour three years running.
Well done for a British woman who as a child was teased about her weight by classmates and missed out on several acting parts because she was stigmatised as being too heavy. She was never the one to win the races or jump the highest.
But in 2009 Kate Winslet got her’s back.In what Hollywood terms ‘award season’ she won both
an Oscar for Best Actress for her part in ‘The Reader’ and a Golden Globe for ‘Revolutionary Road’ which was also directed by her husband, Sam Mendes.
'Winning the Oscar was like winning all the prizes in one single night that I never won as a kid. For me, it was an internal-fist-pumping moment of yes,' she says.
The first part as leading lady for which she received a nomination was that of Rose DeWitt Bukater in ‘Titanic’,
which is set to be re-released in 3D on 4. April. This movie became her big break in Hollywood. And from the very beginning she stood out from the crowd of starlets constantly floating into the movie capital – in part thanks to her curves, but also because she has always had a very forward manner and absolutely no qualms about using harsh language.
Youcef Nabi, head of Lancôme, cites this as the very reason for her becoming the star that she is today:
'I believe it’s precisely because she doesn’t fit the Hol-lywood stereotype that Kate is so appealing to the pub-lic. She is extremely feminine, and perfectly at ease with her shape, and radiates with confidence, authenticity and passion. Women can identify with her,' he told Har-per’s Bazaar in November of last year.
I had to defend my bodyDespite having to endure remarks on her curves for years, Kate Winslet has always refused to be cowed by Hollywood’s narrow-minded concept of the perfect female body. Where other actresses put all their energy into eating salads and exercising, Kate always insisted that directors and producers should take her the way she was.
'I was a lot more voluptuous when I was younger. I felt I had to defend my body, and took a very public stand, which I still absolutely believe in. But I’ve stopped talking about it now,' Kate told British Vogue last year.
By Kristine Høeg
The curves have followed Kate Winslet through her career. But while she has been perfectly
content with her figure, the film industry have had a difficult time with it. Fortunately, Kate
Winslet is in possession of an undeniable talent

exercise. But at the same time it’s simply a question of keeping it together as i get older. Mainly it served as a way out of everything, but was also about taking care of myself,' she told British Vogue.
Doesn’t feel like a movie starand even though kate winslet is definitely more blonde and more toned today, the world famous curves are still on display. and she can still make light of the media attention lavished on her body. steven soder-bergh, who directed winslet in his latest thriller, ‘Contagion’, told the following story to Harper’s Bazaar:
'so we were filming ‘Contagion’, we’ve got her lying in a trench – a mass grave that’s been dug in the middle of the city – and it’s December, it’s cold, and we’re pan-

• After her first success in the film ‘Heavenly Creatures’ (1994), a reviewer predicted that she would never be a big star.
• Was considered for the role of Bridget in ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ (2001).
• Turned down the female lead in ‘Shakespeare in Love’ (1998) – instead it went to Gwyneth Paltrow who took home an Oscar for the role.
• She has sung in five of her films – including the song What If from the movie ‘Christmas Carol: The Movie’ (2001). It was relea-sed as a single and it reac-hed the top ten in the UK, peaking at number six.
• Missed the premiere of ‘Titanic’ because she was attending the funeral of close friend and former boyfriend, Stephen Tredre.
24 Zizzi Magazine
One thing she does want to discuss regarding her looks is plastic surgery – something she has neither had nor consi-dered – not even at the age of 36 and with two child-births behind her.
'no, i have never tried any of that stuff. i don’t have parts of my body that i hate or would like to trade for somebody else’s. and i don’t have any desire to change my body as a result of having had two kids,' says kate whom Oprah praised by saying: 'i love the fact that you have real breasts.'
The shocking break-upthe two children, Mia (11) and Joe (8) are kate’s by two different men. Mia’s father is Jim treaplethon whom she met during the shooting of ‘Hideous kinky’ in 1998 and married the same year. the marriage only lasted three years – by then kate had met movie director sam Mendes. they moved in together in new York, got married in 2003 and had Joe, their son.
For seven years she and sam Mendes were one of Hollywood’s so-called ‘power couples’. they peaked in 2009 with their joint project ‘Revolutionary Road’ which was nominated for an impressive 27 awards.
But in 2010 the couple suddenly made public their split. things were kept courte-ous. there was no badmouthing between the two, and they remained united as parents for the children. But Hollywood will be Hollywood. Rumours abounded that he had fallen in love with actress Rebecca Hall, and that the fact that kate winslet didn’t win her Oscar in His movie had caused cracks in their love. to this day kate will not discuss the reasons for the divorce but it was undoubtedly a painful experience.
'the big public divorce is the main reason i took up ning towards her face. suddenly, she says,
‘Do, i look thin in this shot?’.'kate will soon come face to face with
herself – as she looked in 1997 – since the re-release of ‘titanic’ is bound to renew the interest in the actress. But despite having headlined many, many posters her own feelings about her popularity remain mixed. this was revealed in instyle in 2009: 'i don’t feel like a movie star in
my life at all, and i don’t particularly think i behave like one. i don’t have my own plane. i don’t have a chef of a trai-ner. to me, you’re a movie star only during the time when you’re at the
academy awards or at an important glamo-rous event. it’s very much a hat that you wear, and as soon as the event’s over, that hat comes off. i’m back to being me and being Mommy, and that’s my priority.'

'I forget to breathe.' Christina Donskov is standing in front of shelves brimming with hot clothing, wearing sky high stilettos and trying to flash a natu-ral smile to the photographer. She and Mari-anne Jakshøj have agreed to having a mini make-over from Zizzi’s summer collection with the aid of a stylist who will offer sugge-stions on what will look good on each of them according to exactly her figure.
'The key is harmonising your body. Clo-thes can accentuate or tone down different parts of your body and make it more balan-ced. At Zizzi we’re experts at doing just that,' says Katerina Couloubas, the Store Manager of the new Zizzi store at Frede-riksberg Centret in Copenhagen.
The store is set in a cosy nook, separate from the hubbub of the mall. As soon as
you step inside – walking between candle-sticks, music and heaps of cool clothing – you almost feel as if visiting a close friend.
Trying something newChristina and Marianne are immediately browsing the store, feeling right at home, flitting in and out of the fitting room while trying on various pieces from the latest col-lection laid out for the occasion by Kate-rina Couloubas. Floral prints, loud colours, long summer dresses, stump jeans and pastel coloured tunics are all on display, and even though the two girls have a very good sense of what will look good on them, they are open to trying something new, something that they wouldn’t usually even consider – including bright jeans, brown tones and a tunic with large flowers.
The Zizzi staff is always ready with heaps of good advice regarding the season’s trends and how to make the most of your figure. Follow two Zizzi
girls’ transformation with the assistance of our personal shopper
'One of the trends of the summer is muted colours, lots of nuances of kaki which look good on both fair and dark skinned girls. Floral prints are everywhere, and we have a lot of gorgeous summer dresses in bright colours,' Katerina Couloubas explains while presenting Marianne with a pair of kaki jeans, and a long floral dress for Chri-stina – both sets look good on the girls and through the photographer’s lens.
'I realise why some models may be a little bitchy after a full day in front of the camera. This is hard work,' says Marianne Jakshøj with a smile while taking direc-tions from the photographer and the stylist who are both offering friendly encourage-ment as if this was a tv-show:

Tips for your shopping
'Christina is a tall girl, and a floor length dress looks amazing if you have the right height. Shorter girls should steer clear of long dresses – it’ll make them look shorter. But this summer dress has the per-fect length, and it is cut just below the bosom to make the most of Chri-stina’s figure. The long straight lines make her look tall and smart,' comments stylist Katerina Coulou-bas and adds that there will be lots of floral prints this summer. Every-thing from patterns similar to what is on Christina’s dress to ‘Little House on the Prairie’-like sprigged fabrics.'The jacket is denim so it will go with pretty much anything – it cuts just right at the waist.'
Christina’s opinion:'I love the long dress – the material is thin and light, and the pattern is really pretty and suitably multi-colou-red without going over board. And of course I love blue. This would be perfect for a summer party.'
ChristinaTips from The sTylisT:
Beige, champagne – any shade of kaki, really – will be big this sum-
mer. The colour goes really well with cobalt, coral and other strong colours.
Kaki is a nice neutral colour and it looks good on girls of both fair and
dark complexion.

' A camisole or a chemise may be a good idea, particularly in a contrasting colour.'
Casual
'Christina has an hourglass body shape. Big bosom, a pretty waist and wide hips. She should wear clothes that accentuate the waist and cover her thighs in order to harmonise her look,' says Katerina Couloubas as she fetches a top that will show off some bosom, a tunic in a black and white pattern and a pair of straight leg jeans.
'Pants with stretch and boot cut work well with Christina’s build because they cover and harmo-nise. They are slim without being too skinny, which would draw too much attention – unless
done in combination with a par of high boots. The key is accentuating her waist – preferably with a belt or a top that can be tied under the bust,' she explains. She has picked a tie waist tunic to pre-sent the bosom in a handsome way. She also recommends that Christiana find something in coral red which will complement her fair skin.
Christina’s opinion:'I like the pants. I might have chosen a darker colour, but they're a good fit. The tunic has an excel-lent cut – very flattering to my body shape.'

'Marianne is apple-shaped – she has great legs and is slightly curvaceous at the abdomen – so I’ll try to accentuate her legs. These bright blue jeans have very slim leggings that will show off her great legs. The T-shirt, with both print and trimmings, has a beautiful hang. Expect to see a lot of trimmings and detailing this summer. It makes the clothes festive in their own right, and you won’t need as much jewellery,' says Katerina Couloubas, emphasising the importance of plus-size girls finding the right ‘cut’, visually speaking, to avoid having the clothes dividing the body in
the wrong places: 'In the case of Marianne that would be the abdomen, because it would look larger than it really is. A camisole or a chemise may be a good idea, particularly in a contrasting colour. That gives a better transition from top to jeans.'
Marianne’s opinion:'I adore it. The colour of the jeans is gorgeous and slim-fit pants look good with my figure. The T-shirt pattern is neutral, but not so neutral that you feel plain. I would absolutely buy this set of clothes.'

Casual
'Once the sun has tanned Marianne a bit, the light kaki and the brown shades will go extremely well with her skin and hair colour,' Katerina Couloubas comments on the party clothes that consists of a pair of tight fitting stump jeans and a satin top with a brown pattern and sequins on the shoulder:'The top is designed in such a way that the fabric drapes across the belly and makes the waist look slim-mer – this is our focus point. The sleeves are elbow length to cover any flabby skin on the upper arm, and if it gets too cold a cape or a large scarf would look great. Or a suit jacket, but that would also cover up the cool sequinned shoulders. Mari-anne has some great gams, so she should flaunt them, but tight-fitting jeans won’t work so well, since she’s not particularly tall. The same thing goes for stilettos with an ankle strap – they will only work on a girl with slim calfs,' says the stylist.
Marianne's opinion:'The pants have a cool cut, and I am definitely getting a pair, perhaps in a darker colour, but they're awesome. The top has a beautiful hang, and I love the Lady Gaga tinsel on the shoulder. The colours are also very nice.'

have your friends over for a barbecueWhy sit around at separate BBQ's when you could be together having a party? Invite your friends and their kids over, borrow an extra BBQ if you have to, and ask the guests to bring whatever they would have put on the BBQ at home. You provide the setting and offer a good, strong wel-come cocktail. Try an Amaretto Sour – a fantastisk mix of sweet almond liqueur and lemon sour:
3 cl Amaretto almond liqueur1 cl sweet and sour mix
Shake Amaretto and sweet and sour mix and pour into in a cocktail glass. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry.Create a festive atmosphere for the children by offering them a special welcome drink as well, for instance elderflower cordial with sparkling water. Decorate with a novelty straw and a few frozen berries – party umbrellas are always a hit.Finish the night off wtih a fun party game for young and adult – pétanque, kubb, croquet – and your event will be a huge success.

Summer5 things to do in your summer holiday
go see a movie – by yourself! The holiday is the perfect time to go to the movies – particularly enjoying the air conditioned cinema on a hot sum-mer’s day or seeking refuge from grey rainy days. For a good scare: ‘Promet-heus’ (June). In 1979 Rid-ley Scott created the chilling space horror ‘Alien’. ‘Prometheus’ is a prequel to ‘Alien’ – so be prepared for a terrifying space thriller!
For a laugh: ‘Brave’ (June). Pixar’s latest animated feature is a moving and hilarious fairytale about Princess Merida who must defy ancient tradi-tion and face a terrible monster. For a sentimental time: ‘Titanic’ (April). Yes, THAT ‘Titanic’. Now in 3D to celebarate the centennial of the sinking of the Tita-nic. We all know the sad ending but ‘Titanic’ remains a fantastic voyage which is now back on the big screen.

a few ideas for cosy, fun and festive activities for the summer holiday

If you are fortunate enough to have a few private hours here and there, fill a jar with luxurious presents for yourself. Write down each ‘present’ on a note and pick a note each day.
Have a manicure at a spa. It will cost about 20-30 euros, and it’s a wonder-ful, quick little indul-gence.
Buy lots of flowers. The scent of flowers is won-derful, and it’s a way to invite nature inside if you don’t have a garden.
Enjoy a long foot-bath with fragrance oils (lavender is nicely relaxing) while watching a movie or reading a book.
Fill the thermos with a nice cup of tea or make your-self a delicate cucumber sandwich (toast bread, cold butter, thinly sliced cucumbers and salt) and head out to the nearest park and enjoy lunch while watching the tou-rists.
Go to the library and pick up your favourite children’s book and re-read it. Whether it’s ‘The Famous Five’ or ‘The Black Stallion’ revisiting the amazing worlds of your childhood can be both moving, sur-prising and funny.
Splash on a clay face mask– one that sits for a long time and cleanses deep and that you never seem to find the time for in your busy schedule.

4CAMpfire & MArShMAllowSRemember the quiet pleasure of sitting with the grown-ups around a fire when you were a kid? Well, it's never too late. It’s a cosy and won-derful way to enjoy each other’s company – and create memories.Give the BBQ a break and build a bonfire surrounded by chairs and blankets. Only your imagination puts a limit to what can be roasted on the fire. You might start with sausages and stick bread and finish off with marshmallows – they are really tasty roasted over a slow fire.A bonfire is a great opportunity to chat and tell stories. But you can also venture the classical campfire discipline: Singing. Remember, it’s not about beautiful singing but about having fun, so let it rip. If anyone feels particularly adven-turous a guitar always works won-ders – and you can play a lot of songs with just three chords.

For the whole familyhAVe A piCniCIt can be something of a challenge to find activities that both kids and grown-ups will enjoy. A picnic at the beach is one such activity. The kids can play, run around, swim, play
games and build sandcastles, while you can catch some rays, relax and maybe even dive into that crime novel that lies neglected in the daily routine.
3 Tip for the picnic basket: You are on holiday, so allow yourself the rare luxury of not bothering with the same old packed lunch. Give all of you a treat by heading to your local deli and pick up some delicacies such as cheese, paté, chorizo, oli-ves and a nice rustic bread. Top it off with a nice bottle of wine for the grown-ups and juice for the kids.
Tip for packing: Remember a blanket large enough for you to sit on with-out having sand in the food.

casual wearStilettos are essential when it comes to adding height, and if you combine them with a pair of cool jeans, maybe even in a loud colour, you can take away attention from the mid section. Wear a short dress or a long tunic to go with your jeans, pre-ferably with sequins or a catchy pattern. Jewellery can be effec-tive in catching the eye – go for a pretty necklace of some size or long, thin chain-links.

party wearA long tunic with a lively pattern will draw attention to your face, and the Empire cut enhances the waist and bust. You may want to wear a tight-fitting chemise beneath the top to give an extending layering effect. If your top has a lot of pattern keep the pants in a darker, muted colour so as not to lose focus.

You may wish to accentuate your ample bosom, or you may prefer to tone it down. The solution is wearing something close-fitting but not too tight over the chest.
fit
Party wearA deep cut or V-neck will have a slimming effect on your bust, but leave the necklace at home and pick a set of beautiful ear-rings or bracelets instead. The see-through fabric and three-quarter length sleeves of the tunic will make your arms look long and slender. And if you’ve got fabulous legs, go for a pair of pants or shorts – don’t hide them away.
Casual wearPick a top that is close-fitting but not too tight over the chest to make the most of your bust. If the top is cut just beneath the bosom you will get a nice waistline as a bonus. Dresses, tunics, and T-shirts in A-line styles, with a pattern or details at the hem help balance out your silhouette and create harmony.

ChristinaChristina is 34 and not very tall. She has a full bust and fabulous, slender legs. Her curves are mainly around her bust, so the goal is balancing her sil-houette to take away focus from the upper body while enhancing her legs and behind. The best way to do this is by using colour, tops in empire cut and gor-geous shoes.

Casual wearLet your legs and bust have the attention. Show off your legs in a pair of tight jeans or Capris that look stunning with stilettos. A vivid top, whether patterned or with nice details, will draw the eye to your face. Wear a tight-fitting camisole or chemise beneath your loose top – they provide a good transition bet-ween top and jeans.
Moving attention away from the hips is easy with a long and patterned tunic. Wear with a pair of cool jeans.

SanniSanni is 23, tall, well proportioned and curvaceous around the hips. The key is balan-cing the upper and lower body so that the hips don’t stand out as the widest point. Wear dark skirts, colourful tops and try to draw the eye towards the face – using colours, jewellery and a big smile.
4.
Party wearA floor-length dress will make you look taller and gives a balanced silhouette – particularly with a pair of stilettos. It is important that the dress has an empire cut just bene-ath the bust to enhance the waist and create curves. A short jacket or a cardigan will further accentuate your waist, and a pair of pretty ear-rings serves as the perfect acces-sories for this look.

Guidemake-up
Accentuate your exquisite, golden summer glow – don’t just rely on the
same old make-up. Here is some good advice on achieving a beautiful and
natural summer complexion
EssEntial summer tricks
60 Zizzi Magazine
1. HigHligter use liquid highlighter bey-ond your cheekbones – the light reflected from cheeks, brow and chin will blur imperfections, and your skin will appear ten times as healthy and naturally glowing. Buy an actual shimmer lotion for this pur-pose or mix a small amount of highlighter into your vanishing creme. make sure to blend well along the jawline and apply make-up on top.Strobe Liquid Lotion, MAC
2. Creme BlusH Substitute your regular powder blush with a cream colour or even a liquid blush. The moisture-rich versions offer a more natu-ral blush since they’re not matte. They also tend to feel lighter on the skin. Rub it on little by little and stick to areas where you would blush naturally.Instant Light Blush ’Coral Tonic #3’, Clarins
3. ConCealerYou don’t have to use a covering founda-
tion in the summer since the tawny colour will make your skin look beautiful in itself. But there may still be some minor imper-fections to cover up. use the concealer on critical spots only – dark circles, ble-mishes, obvious capillaries – and be care-ful to blend for a perfect result.Master Touch Concealer, Max Factor
4. BronzerBronzer or sun powder is a darker version of your normal powder that often contains a discrete shimmer. Don’t try to cover your whole face in a layer of powder, but concentrate on cheeks, across the bridge of the nose as well as a dab on the fore-head and the upper part of the chest area. Wherever the sun would naturally tan. It
is particularly useful when the sun withholds its rays.Star Bronzer Intense, Lancôme
5. Brow ColourThe sun will bleach your hair so it may be a good idea to emphasise your brows with a bit of eye shadow or colour to match your (natural) hair
colour. accentuated brows gives character to your face – particularly if you don’t over-do the make-up. But remember ONLY to draw inside the natural edge of the brow and use very little colour.Bitty Brow Kit – Brunette, Jane Iredale
6. loud lipstiCkLoud colours – coral, cerise, pink, and orange-red – look stunning on lips and nails when your skin is lightly tanned. Be careful when applying the first layer – pre-ferably using lip pencil and/or lip brush – and keep the rest of your make-up to a minimum.Lip Color ’Neon Pink’ or ’Atomic Orange’, Bobbi Brown

HoneyLoose mineraL

USE SOFTpaSTelSsoft pastels on eyes and lips will bring out your natural summer beauty. Here is a quick guide to a gorgeous and effortless summer make-up.
step 1 a tHin layer of mineral foundation gives a natural look with a hint of shine and makes the skin look healthy and attractive. Cover dark circles around the eyes, mouth and wings of the nostrils with a brightening concealer, but only if needed once the foundation has been applied.
step 2 create radiance by using blusH on the apple-cheeks. Smile in the mirror and apply colour on the fullest area of the cheek. Use a light rose colour or a soft manda-rin blush for a fresh appearance. A touch of light shimmer eye shadow or highlighter on cheekbone, bridge of the nose and brow ridge may also serve to bring out your look.
step 3 pick a pastel colour eye sHadow – light blue, purple, green, or apricot – and spread evenly across the eyelid using a brush. Stop at the globe line, but pull a bit of colour into the corner of the eye and be careful to blur the edges. Use an eyeliner pencil in the same colour (or light brown) to draw a soft, curvy arc along the eyelashes. step 4 finisH your make-up with a squeeze of the eyelash curler and a nice layer of mascara. You may want to add a pair of artificial lashes in the outer corner of the eye for an extra feminine look. Remember a bit of colour for your lips – anything from soft apricot to distinct orange works wonders with tawny skin. The same goes for the varnish on your nails.

Garden Party
Summer partyThe sun is shining, the scent of flowers fills the air and the warm breeze whispers through the foliage. Don't stay cooped up inside – time for a garden party!
Garden parties are magical. Under the open sky, relishing the passage of the sun, caressed by the wind, listening to the sounds of the garden. Sharing the summer with close friends can be an unforgettable experience. A garden party can be anything from simply moving one’s plates to the terrace, to an expansive and deliberate fête – the important thing is the joy of being outdoors together.
To do or not to do?Admittedly, a garden party can be something of a gamble. “What if the weather turns bad?” This is very true, but as they say: nothing ventured … You can plan ahead by inve-sting in a pavilion. These are a modest investment from any garden centre and will withstand a bit of rain. Or you can simply keep your fingers crossed and put your trust in the Weather Clerk – and be prepared to relocate indoors if the skies open.
Guide
By Lars Nøhr Andresen
65Zizzi Magazine
Summer party “It’s very convenient to serve bread, pie, salads and cheese. In this way you won’t have to worry
about timing or manning the grill.”
What to eatIf you are uncertain about the weather keeping dry, a barbecue is the wrong way to go: You will be stuck with a pile of spareribs and sausages that are less savoury when cooked on a stove. Besides, a BBQ demands care and attention, and unless you can recruit a couple of your guests to man the BBQ, you will be kept busy while your
guests are giving cheers and having a good time.Consider foods that are easy to serve, easy to eat and easy to clear away. A garden party is all about having a cosy time and enjoying being outdoors – there is no need for fancy culinary arts. Go for something that can simply be placed on the table and doesn’t warrant a lot of attention.
Simple, yet deliciousBread, pies, salads and cheeses are a good alternative to hot foods at a garden party. You won’t have to worry about timing and keeping an eye on the barbecue in the garden or the stove in the kitchen. Everything can be set on the table – although it may be a good idea to find a spot in the shade if you are going to be dining for some time.
• Whole grain bread serves as the basis for your garden party menu. Slice it in advance and put it in bread baskets to make it easily accessible at the table. Serve with butter.
• Onion pie with feta cheese. Serve cold. Cut it in advance so that your guests can easily grab a slice. Different types of pies are avail able at the super market if you want to cut corners.
• Olive tapenade. A rich tapenade serves as contrast to the mild onion pie, and tapenade goes well with cheese. Available readymade from the supermarket.
• Salad. A classic green salad with tomatoes, cucumber and different types of lettuce. Serve with roasted nuts, almonds, croutons, olives and a choice of savoury dressings. This will allow your guests to customise their salad, and the small bowls look good on the table.
• A selection of cheeses. Choose some mild cheeses such as Brie and Camembert, as well some more exotic choices, maybe a mild Manchego and a blue Stilton with a little bite. Honeyed walnuts to go with the cheese is a classic – and it works almost as a dessert.

Garden Party
“Shade is important. Not everyone enjoys
being under the burning sun.”
SERVING DRINkSFor a garden party you may want to steer clear of complicated cocktails that need shaking and mixing and lots of different ingredients. Try to keep it quick and handy, because
neither host nor guests want the bother of constantly skipping to the kitchen – particularly if you are in the yard and the apartment is on the third floor or the kitchen is inaccessible.
Cool and refreshing …Apart from a fruit punch you should try to keep things simple. Chilled white wine, soft drinks, lemonade and cold beer – perhaps an easy drink such as Gin & Tonic. When it comes to beer, wheat and lager are nice and refreshing in the heat. Presenting the bottles in an icefilled zinc bucket or a bowl is a classic and it looks great – but it requires lots of ice.
Classic fruit punchA fruit punch is easy and quick to prepare, and most people like a fresh punch. It’s easy to have one variety with alcohol for the adult and one without for the children.

TorchesTorches look great and their light creates a beautiful ambience in the garden. Place them to the side so people don’t accidentally bump into them.
reMeMber …
When darkness fallsOne of the most enjoyable aspects of a garden party is sitting in the twilight, watching the sun go
down as day turns into night. And as darkness falls you’ll want to keep the illumination cosy and not too bright.
CandlesRegular candles have a tendency to blow out or smelt too quickly. You will either need some pillar candles or even better – and cosier – candles in coloured glass or jars. Distribute throughout the garden to create a magical mood.
… serve plenty of water if the weather is hot and sunny. Alcoholic beverages are diuretic, and if all you drink in the hot sun is white wine, you may feel unwell during the day. Always drink plenty of cold water!
… keep a stash of ice cubes for the garden party. Ice cubes smelt faster in the sun, and there is nothing better than having lots of ice in your drink when the weather is warm. The more cubes you have in the cooling bowl, the longer they will stay frozen, so keep a huge bowl of ice somewhere
cool. Ice cubes may be available at your local supermarket. … buy a cooling box with freezer packs or ice if you need to keep food or drinks chilled for a period, with no refrigerator close at hand. This will serve as a portable fridge.
… using disposable tableware is a practical solution if your kitchen is not adjacent to the garden.
… shade. Not everyone enjoys being under the burning sun, either because of the heat or the sharp light.
… we wish you a wonderful summer party with lovely weather and happy guests.
LanternsLanterns of any kind are extremely effective – particularly in the coloured variety. If you want lighting at the table, lanterns are a good solution because although moth are attracted to the light, they can’t get to the flame.
