ZOMBA ACTION PROJECT is the charity set up in March 2003, following the

establishment of the Coleraine – Zomba partnership, initiated by Coleraine

Borough Council.

It raises and manages funds for approved projects to help disadvantaged

people in Zomba, Malawi and in doing so helps give the Coleraine

community an increased world vision.

Activities – Working with partner focus groups in Zomba:

to identify and supervise projects that contribute most to alleviating disadvantage

to raise funds to support and fund sustainable projects

Chairman’s Annual Report

In my first report as Chairman we are celebrating all that has been achieved

through the Zomba Action project (ZAP) in the ten years of its existence. Over

£500,000 has been raised and this 10th report gives many illustrations of how this

money has benefitted the most disadvantaged in the Zomba Community. We also

celebrate how our understanding of each others communities and ways of life has

grown.

Earlier this year Paul Snelling (Secretary of ZAP) and myself made a presentation

to the Coleraine Borough Council (CBC) illustrating the achievements of ZAP

in its first ten years. The Council and the people of the Borough should indeed be proud of al that has been achieved

through this living partnership between Zomba and Coleraine.

The Memorandum of Understanding between Coleraine Borough Council (CBC) and Zomba City Council (ZCC)

is to mutually improve the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of our two communities through :

o exchanging experiences and best practice in local government

o collaborating , cooperating and learning from each other.

o Increasing our understanding of each other’s communities and ways of life

o Supporting practical assistance for the most disadvantaged in the community.

ZAP was set up and registered as a charity to fulfil the third and fourth of these aims.

To illustrate some ways how this has been worked through :

Three month Commonwealth Scholarships have enabled six employees of ZCC to come to Coleraine to gain

experience in their field of work. During our recent visit, we made a courtesy call on the new Chief Executive, Mr Ali Phiri,

who was very impressed by the knowledge and efficiency of his staff who had been in Coleraine under the

Commonwealth Scholarships.

Over the ten years there has been an almost annual visit by members of ZAP’s Management Committee, Councillors

and Council employees to Zomba to keep up the personal contact with counterparts in ZCC and with the members of the

ZAP Zomba Management Board. These visits have been very valuable and have been personally funded.

In 2008 Dr Nellie Mbano who, with her husband Zondiwe, are Co-ordinator and Chairman respectively, visited Coleraine

and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Ulster. For the last five years some final year

education students have gone to the Education Department in Chancellor College for a few weeks and have been

allocated to Secondary Schools in Zomba area.

Coleraine Borough Council has supported the work of ZAP administratively as it was set up to fulfil two of the aims

of the Memorandum. Our thanks are particularly due to Mrs Karen Wallace for all her work on behalf of ZAP over the

past ten years as well as to other Council employees who have supported ZAP in various ways. With the new

Causeway Council coming into being in 2015 we would hope that ZAP would fulfil a similar role for the new Council.

4 Zomba Action Project Annual Report 2012-13

The success of the Zomba Action Project so far has been due to the fact that the people of Coleraine and the

people of Zomba have worked together in partnership with each other. All who have served in the ZAP

Management Boards and Committees in Coleraine and Zomba are people who give time and expertise voluntarily

because they value what ZAP is doing to fulfil its aims which are to increase our understanding of each other ’s

communities and to provide practical aid to help address the very basic needs of the most disadvantaged people in the

Zomba community. I want to thank those who have been involved with ZAP in Coleraine and Zomba for their dedication

and enthusiasm for this very important work drawing attention to the work of Paul Snelling (Secretary), Dr Nellie

Mbano(Co-ordinator in Zomba) and Joyce McMullan for her work on this report.

Over the past year the Malawi Kwacha has devalued by over 100% and currently the rate of inflation is around 40%.

Wage earners in Malawi are facing great difficulties since their employers are not able to give rises to counter the rate of

inflation and many subsistence farmers cannot afford fertilizers or seed to grow their crops.

We were delighted that we were able to fund the second part of the large Disaster Risk Reduction Project in the Kimu

Villages area (population 20,000). The first part, funded by the Church Group had supported the successful planting of

drought resistant crops, namely cassava, to 300 vulnerable households. Funding received from Lloyds/TSB Foundation,

TBF Thompson Trust and UIA Charitable Trust together with ZAP funding, enabled Emmanuel International (EI), a

development organization to activate the second part, an irrigation project which helps two village groups to grow a

second crop of maize and sweet potatoes in one year. This will provide food security for about 200 families in each

village. Food security is a big issue when drought and flooding can destroy crops that families rely on.

None of these projects could have been financially supported if it had not been for the generosity of our

supporters and the grants received from funding bodies and we want to thank you most sincerely for your

ongoing support in the past year as well as in previous years.

We have continued to send goods in containers and the contents are much appreciated and reach individuals who may

not benefit from other projects supported. Thank you to all who have contributed knitted items, spectacles, books, sheets

and other items.

Finally as ZAP enters its second decade we are confident that the partnership with Zomba can be maintained and that

we can continue to work for the benefit of both our communities. Here in Coleraine we face two main challenges – first

that ZAP and its supporters in schools and communities will

continue to be enthusiastic in planning events which will raise

the necessary funding to enable us to provide for the most

disadvantaged people in Zomba and secondly to involve

younger people in the work of ZAP. We hope that in 2014 a

group of young adults will go to Zomba for a few weeks to be

exposed to life in Malawi and to relate to people in the local

communities.

EI is an organisation that has been working in development in the Zomba area for many years. They identify and deliver most of the ZAP community development projects. Whilst most of these projects are working with communities to empower them to generate income and improve their health sometimes it is nesessary to intervene in a crisis. This year a crisis situation was identified in the Chingale area where there had been five years with little rain. ZAP was able to respond and 123 elderly persons, some of whom were responsible for grandchildren were supplied monthly for three months with a bag of maize.

One recipient was Idah Namuli.

She is a 78 year old widow who

had five daughters who have all

died. They left her with 8

grandchildren who are in her

care. She was failing to find food

for herself and the now extended

family.

These women

spent days

without food.

They are so

grateful for this

gift . Hunger is a

reality for many

and ZAP has

been able to fund

only the most

needy that EI

identified in one

district.

Working together with the ZAP Zomba Education Committee

Scholarships for school fees Getting selected in Malawi for a place in secondary education is one very big challenge

when primary schools have few resources and there are not enough secondary schools.

Finding the fees for secondary school is an even greater problem if you come from a family

where you have only one or even no parent. You can also live at some distance from a

secondary school and need to find and rent accommodation near to a school.

Thanks to the generosity of Hazelbank Presbyterian Church, who have started to sponsor

school fees at Day Secondary Schools in the Zomba area, 30 pupils are now able to continue

their education. ZAP Education Committee in Zomba write that they are getting more and

more requests for sponsorship and are so thankful for the timely support rendered to

needy students. These students still struggle to find money for shoes, books and daily

needs.

Some members of the Education Committee

£25 a year sponsors school fees for a Day Secondary school pupil.

Could you, your class, your organisation sponsor fees for a pupil/s?

Namikhate Primary

School, has 983 pupils

and 15 teachers. The

derelict barn, near the

other classrooms, is

currently used in bad

weather when outdoor

classes are impossible. ZAP

has provided funding to

renovate the building to

provide more

classrooms.

Community volonteers

will assist specialist labour

to undertake the work. The

school received funding for

year which are much

appreciated.

The Albino Group have 96

members and practical support is

given by supplying sunhats, long

sleeved clothing and suncreams. Mr

Masapi, a teacher, works in his

spare time to raise awareness of

issues facing albinos and supports

other albinos in the Zomba area.

Margaret Henderson and Joyce

McMullan met with Mr Masapi and

the ZAP Health Group members to

learn more about his challenges.

Visits were made to the Zomba Central and Eye Hospitals, Queen Elizabeth Central

Hospital and BEIT CURE Orthopaedic Hospital in Blantyre to meet the staff who

receive and distribute baby clothes, spectacles, wheel chairs and medicines and

those who receive funding from ZAP. We also were invited to visit wards and meet

patients and carers.

Children with Cancer are being successfully treated. An Eye Hospital, opened in 2010 in Zomba , makes access easier to eye care and testing for glasses. and operations. Our thanks to those who gave donations through ZAP Gifts for orthopaedic operations and cancer treatment. The need continues.

New Contact with a Deaf Group Deaf people have in recent years formed their own groups to support each other and Malawi Association for the Deaf (MANAD) support the local groups. ZAP in Coleraine and Zomba transported sewing machines and carpentry tools which were donated by Tools for Solidarity in Belfast so that deaf people can be trained and acquire skills that will generate income for them. It is hoped that this recent contact with MANAD will lead to more working together in the future.

Your unused spectacles can have a second life in Zomba where they are

Working together with Village Communities

Morry Makapu, pictured left, first

appeared in our Annual Report in 2006-7

when she received her wheelchair from

ZAP. A house has now been built for

Morry and her brother and the local

community assist them daily in practical

ways but not cooking, as Morry is a good

cook herself. In this community, Mawa ndi

Anthu, a Community Based Organisation

(CBO) organise support for the elderly, the

disabled, sick and children under 5, based

in a building donated by ZAP 7 years ago.

They expressed their appreciation for the

building, the house for Morry and her

brother, porridge for children, fertilisers

and clothes during a recent visit by

Margaret and Joyce.

Many more villages need development. The community

below at Sapali have built this building themselves for their orphan care

but it leaks in the rain and needs replacement. They get their water from

the river so need a shallow well. Can we encourage them in their self

help efforts? They are managing well the goats that they received a

couple of years ago.

Some Fundraising and Support Events

10 th year of fundraising - Glenullin Walk and BBQ 2012

From the start of ZAP the Kilrea Get up & Go Walking Group and Margaret &

Charlie Mullan have organised the Glenullin Walk and BBQ with the support of

Mark Strong, Coleraine Borough Council’s Countryside Officer. In recent years the

Glenullin Gaelic Athletic Association have granted the use of their premises for the

BBQ. Good support from the Glenullin Community and many friends have made for

good exercise, great food and good local and wider community participation. Great

evenings have been enjoyed by all and £26,337.62 has been raised for ZAP

projects. Our thanks to everyone involved - providers and supporters.

Book Sells out - As PSALM PRAISE sells out its second edition we

convey our sincere thanks to Dick Gordon and Pearl Hutchinson for

producing it. The profits for ZAP projects since 2003 amounted to an

amazing £17,064.36 which has funded many ZAP projects. Pearl has

been untiring in her promotion of it. We trust that many have been

blessed through reading it and enjoying the photos. Thank you Pearl

and Dick.

Could you produce a book or recipe book to benefit ZAP?
