Hello Zontian’s:

What a wonderful International/New Member Potluck Program

Meeting. Thank you Esther and the New Member Social

Committee for such a wonderful idea.

I learned how to do a Power Point Presentation (thank you U-Tube)

of my experience at the International Convention in Nice, France.

Janis gave a wonderful talk on all of the bylaw changes and the

International Projects for this Biennium.

We will continue “Zonta Says No” and the “Liberia Fistula Project”.

The two new projects are: “Let us Learn Madagascar” An

integrated program for adolescent girls to create opportunities for

vulnerable and excluded girls to realize their rights to an

education in a secure and protective environment. “Delaying Early

Marriage in Niger” Early marriage is a form of sexual and gender-

based violence with detrimental physical, social and economic

effects.

Our third presenter, Ela, spoke to us about the UN & SDG#5

(Sustainable Development Goal #5) This goal mentions that we

need to work on policy, both at creation and at implantation levels.

Our ZISVAW/ADVOCAY Committee are already hard on this project.

If Ela asks you what SDG#5 means, you should be able to tell her!

Many of the committees have met and have made their strategies

for the year ahead. So we are well on our way for a great 2016-

2017 year.

Virginia Gurrola joined VP Esther Figueroa and members at our June

23, program meeting. Virginia touched on several subjects

including a collaboration between Zonta and AAUW to promote

STEM to junior high and high school girls. STEM outreach is an

important project and we welcome the opportunity.

Virginia also spoke to women becoming more involved in local

political activities. She is proud to have been instrumental in

garnering $89 million in funding for our local area including mass

transit. There are 4 open seats available for the Porterville City

Council. She encouraged and urged women to participate in the

process.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS 2 YEARS OLD IN PORTERVILLE!

It’s hard to believe it’s been 2 years since we embarked on building 2 new homes in Porterville. Was it worth it? YOU BET! Where are they now? Vanessa Trevino, mother of 2, is currently working for Dr. Resa and studying to be an LVN. However, her next goal is to become a correctional officer. Rosa Elizondo, also a single mother, is attending Porterille College and working in the Buusiness Office at Porterville School District (Dr Gibbs) with a goal of obtaining her Teaching Credential at Fresno State. Denise reported that Porterville has rehabbed 5 homes and looks forward to having a lot in the City ready for a new build. Additionally, several homes have had a “Brush With Kindness” for minor repairs. We were also graced to welcome Larisa Gibson of Harris Home Furnishing. Harris Home Furnishing has been a terrific supporter of Habitat and the families.

Gearing Up For Advocacy

With a long list of advocacy projects proposed for the coming year, the

Zisvaw/Advocacy Committees invite club members to join us as we strive

to bring the Zonta message of non violence to our community.

In union with Zonta International we will attempt to move from an aware-

ness phase to an action phase to end violence against women and girls.

At our recent committee meeting the following projects were proposed.

Continue membership in the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence (CPEDV) and plan to participate in their annual Day of Advo-cacy in Sacramento in May.

Participate in the Tulare County District Attorney’s Justice Run in Oc-tober in Visalia. We will display the Zonta banner, the “orange ladies” and provide a table of Zonta information.

Participate in the Family Crisis Center’s Candlelight Vigil in October with an information table, banner and “orange ladies.”

Participate in Porterville’s Annual Children’s Christmas Parade Explore a couple of programs that target young men to advocate

against teen dating violence Create an “orange ladies” program to display throughout the city at

various times to bring awareness to domestic violence. Participate in Zonta International’s 16 of Days Activism (11/25-

12/10). Honor Denim Day in April with a Proclamation at City Council

These are some of the terrific ideas proposed to get the message out. Be

a voice against violence. Come help us empower women and girls. The

next Zisvaw/Advocacy meeting will be at the Pizza Factory on September

7 at 5:45.

Violence against women is not a women’s issue, but a societal issue.

Recent Past President of Zonta International

Nickie Bonner, Past District 9 Governor wrote to say a heartfelt thank you to all

who contributed either personally or through their club to the very generous gift I

was presented with in Nice as I ended my term as governor. I was touched beyond

words. Governor Mele Spencer presented me with a beautiful Koa wood box with

a gorgeous past-president’s pin inside and a check for $1,403. So that your gifts

and our legacy live on and benefit future generations of Zontians, I donated the

cash to the Zonta Internationl Foundation Endowment Fund. Thank you. It was an

honor to serve as your governor and to work with all of you.
