We keep Marian in our thoughts as she continues her battle to be well again. Best Wishes to Kate as she recovers from surgery and em-barks on her chemo and radiation treatment. We are thinking of Chris as she supports her brother through his treatment.

Ann and Geoff are to going to Sydney to assist grandson Julian as he prepares for selection at a high level in Aus-tralian gymnastics, while his parents are travelling.

Our own “Dressmaker”

Fellow Zontian Joan Hooper is renowned far and wide as a mar-vellous creator of beautiful wedding gowns. Her latest creation was for Megan Kesper, fellow Zontian Debbie Kesper’s daughter. Joan also made Debbie’s beautiful dress for the wedding day. Megan married Edward at Xavier College Chapel on November 7. Megan’s lace gown was a classic design of heavily embroidered tulle with nude silk chiffon lining. The full circle skirt fell into a chap-el train, featuring a slim fitted bodice with a boat neckline, falling into a deep ‘V’ back. Soft pleating at the back of the bodice showed off the just below the waist small satin band. Fitted sleeves just below the elbow and a long 2 tier veil completed the elegant gown.

Debbie’s gown was a ruby red silk satin, featuring a waltz length full skirt. Swathing complimented the fitted bodice and was finished with a small short sleeve.

CLUB NEWS White Ribbon Day

The 12th annual White Ribbon Day was held on Wednesday 25th November and in Bendigo is increasingly being supported and led by men—even though the organising committee is still largely women such as Vanessa Waite, Margaret Singe and members of groups like Zonta. Having president Kathryn open the ceremony was a great acknowledgement of Zonta’s commitment to ending violence against women, and we had a very visible presence on the day selling white ribbons. Our dogged determination and activism over many years, more recently joined by champions such as Rosie Battie, who ad-dressed the Victorian Parliament on the issue on Thursday, has seen a significant increase in confidence for women victims to speak out, and now some important Victorian government action. On WRD the Victorian government announced a significant funding allocation,($12million over 4 years) available immediately, which will provide grants of up to $7000 to enable women to pay for rent, relocation, clothing, school supplies etc so they can escape violent situations. The funds can also be used to improve security or safety in their homes or to cover bills and medical expenses. There is still much to be done. However, with advocates such as Luke Ablett imploring every one of us to consider what mes-sage we inadvertently send to young boys that allow them to grow up with attitudes of disrespect for women and attitudes which perpetuate gender inequality... change is nigh. There seems to be a significant shift in the community towards eradicat-ing the scourge that is violence against women, and is it heartening to see more men speaking out and stronger media focus on the issue. The ABC’s documentary “Hitting Home” and follow up Q&A was a great start! Watch it on IView if you missed it!
