Zoos should not exist

By: Elijah, Celia & Nathan

Opening words

Zoos should not exists because they don’t meet the

physical and emotional needs of animals, Zoos take

animals from their natural habitat and they are not

treated right and Zoos are not able to protect the

animals in extreme circumstances.

Claim #1:

Zoos don't meet the physical and emotional

needs of animals.

Evidence #1

Zoos cramp animals into small spaces which prevents them from

being able to move around as they would in the wild.

An 103 year old orca whale was spotted in the wild. Seaworld

claims, ”many of SeaWorld's orcas die before they reach their 20s”.

This proves a whale lives a lot longer in the wild than in zoos

because it has more space (swimming space) in the ocean. Link to article about whale.

Another example showing sea world animals get sick before their 20s-30s is here.

Lolita, who belongs to Miami Seaquarium, has been stuck in this tank by herself since 1980. Link to article.

At the Lincoln Park zoo, after they drained the seals’ tank, we saw that it was only 7 feet deep

Elephants not in zoos live 2 times longer than elephants in zoos. This is the conclusion of an article from “Science” magazine. The researchers also stated that “stress and/or obesity are likely the causes of zoo elephants' compromised survivorship.” This article is evidence on why elephants live a happier and healthier life in the wild vs. zoos.

Evidence #2

Claim #2: Zoos take animals from their natural habitat

and can not supply a stable healthy habitat

in the zoo.

Evidence #1

An investigation of the “Cricket Hollow” zoo found evidence for the lack of proper shelter and care for the animals at the zoo. For example:● The water within one coyote enclosure was green and had

debris sitting on the bottom.● The water within the enclosure housing two porcupines

was brown and had debris and/or feces mixed with the water

Pictures

This link is a news broadcast about Cricket Hollow Zoo talking about how they were sued for carrying endangered animals, because they don't have the required habitats to take care of them.

Evidence #2

Proverbs 12:10:

“The righteous person looks out for the welfare of his

livestock”

This shows us that zoos need to take care of the animals and

make sure their habitats are clean. If they are not able to do so,

zoos shouldn’t exist.

This shows how the animals

are getting taunted by people

and they make them jump up

and they can hurt themselves

when they just want to get

out.

Evidence #3

Counter argument

Some might say that there are zoos, like Lincoln park

zoo, that take care of animals. That said, there are other

zoos that don’t take care of animals in an adequate way,

like you saw in the evidence.

Claim #3:

Zoos are not able to protect the animals in it

from extreme circumstances.

Evidence #1

At the Five Sister Zoo in Polbeth, West Lothian an investigation

showed that when the zoo caught on fire, 80 animals including

meerkats, reptiles and otters were killed because they couldn’t

escape their cages.

Evidence #2

At the Georgia zoo, when severe weather flooding happened,

hundreds of animals drowned. A tiger also escaped and killed a

man.

Exodus 23:5:

“If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has collapsed its

load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and help.”

If zoos are not able to protect and help the animals in the zoo in times of

need, they shouldn’t have any animals under their care.

Evidence #3

Closing words

To conclude there are good zoos and bad zoos but no matter how good the zoos are, they can not mimic what the animals have in the wild. So therefore zoos should not exist.
