The man had come riding io the rancho inthe afternoon. He had introduced himself asSeiior Manuel Escobar, emissary of the king, and had said he was riding to Monterey withimportant papers for the governor. With tradi-tional hospitality, Sehora Vasguez had askedhim to rest at the rancho overnight. Grand-father, now too feeble to wander far from theoak chair in the parlor, had made him welcome. But Maria Vasquez did not like the man.Why did his eyes wander so searchinglyabout the room? Why did his gaze rest soeagerly on the silver candlesticks that hadbeen a part of her mother's dowry? Andwhy was Sefior Escobar so pleased when helearned that Maria's father was away fromhome?

After dinner, Maria slipped from the houseand went to the corral where the visitor'shorse was penned. In a lew minutes hermother followed her, carrying a lantern.

"Maria!" Sefiora Vasquez was stern. "Whyare you out here in the dark?"The girl hesitated a moment, then said, "If

Sefior Escobar is the king's emissary, why ishe not traveling in a great coach with anescort?" She took the lantern from her motherand held it high, "See the brand on hishorseit is not the mark of a horse from theroyal stables. It would not surprise me if thisman were an impostor.""Who could he be? And what does he wantof us?" Maria's mother asked.

"Perhaps he is a thief," Maria answered.Sehora Vasquez clasped her hands in

panic. "With your father away, what can wedo? We cannot turn this man away."

"No," Maria agreed. "If he decided hewould not go, we could not make him. I thinkhe wants your silver candlesticks, Mama, butperhaps we can prevent him from takingtKom. Listen..."Maria quickly outlined a plan. Her mother

nodded eagerly."You go back to the house," the girl fin-

ished. "I will take care of everything."It was very late when Maria entered the

house. She pulled off heavy gloves and wentto her mother's room. "Now we will watt,"she said to Sefiora Vasquez.Hours passed in darkness. The night was

well along when Maria and Sefiora Vasquezheard Sefior Escobar open his door, Soft foot-steps came down the hall and passed into theliving room. There was a clink of metal uponmetal. Escobar was taking the candlesticks.Footsteps crossed to the door. The latch waslifted and the door creaked open,Moments later, a yell went up from theyard. Maria and her mother rushed to theliving room. Through the open door theycould hear Sefior Escobar thrashing aroundoutside, screaming, "Help! I am murdered!"

There were several loud thuds, which mighthave been either the candlesticks or SefiorEscobar falling, and there was a continuousrustling and snapping. This was followed bythe sound of feet pounding away past thecorral, toward the Monterey road.

Sehora Vasquez turned to Maria and said,"You had better go tell your grandfather whathappened. I will get a lantern and look for mycandlesticks."

It did not take Sefiora Vasquez long to findthe candlesticks. They lay just where the thiefhad dropped them. And they were hardlyscratched by the tumbleweedthe moundsof prickly, stiff, scratchy tumbleweed thatMaria had piled so carefully in the dark yard.It had taken Maria so long to gather thatmuch tumbleweed, but it had been worth it,Sefior Escobar had fallen head first into theweed, as Maria had known he must fall, forMaria had left nothing to chance. She had tieda length of rope across the frame of the door, just ankle-high.

In old California, horsemanship was veryimportant. When a Californian was onlyfour or five, he was hoisted onto a horseand his education began. By the time he wassix he rode as easily as he walked.

The rancheros prized their horses Arabsteeds brought in from Spain. These werenever stabled. Instead, they were brandedand turned out to pasture to graze forthemselves until a fresh mount was needed.

There had not been a single horse in Cali-fornia before the arrival of the Spanishmissionaries, but within a few years, theherds had grown to alarming sizes. Oneherd alone might number up to 100,000.

Naturally enough, some of these horses, running free in the pastures, turned wild. They lured still others away from the herds.Members of these outlaw bands were calledmestenos. Today we call them ?

At one time, when the West was still very big and very empty, thousands ofwild horses, descended from the Spanish mestenos, roamed the remote valleys.Gradually, as the land was settled, the outlaw bands dwindled. But in someback-country areas, ranchers still encounter crafty, elusive mustangs whichsteal down from the hills to raid corrals and coax away the mares.
