Arve Evensen, the innovator of the patented Zpey rod system has spent many years perfecting the range and performance of, what is to date, the largest departure from conventional fly fishing rods ever. Now backed by a team of international consultants, designers and engineers, the Zpey range consists of over 60 rods ranging from light line , single handed brook rods through to multi-sectioned, double handed Salmon rods for the harshest of conditions. In order to create this superlative range of prod-ucts, there needed to be a basis for such an undertaking; The following is that basis........

With Zpey rods, the Zpey handle enables the arms to be held closer to the body with-out affecting the range, thus allowing the user to cast just as long, while using less power and shorter movements, as well as significantly reducing strain on the body. The bottom 10 centimeters of the handle adds between 60 and 100 centimeters (de-pending on the length of the rod) of increased range to the rod tip. The Zpey handle enables the arms to be held closer to the body without affecting the range, thus al-lowing the user to cast just as long, while using less power and shorter movements. Zpey have created a grip design that provides better cast control, as well as always allowing the user to “feel” the direction his cast is going in. This provides the sports-man with distinct advantages during precision casting.

Creating fishing rods with the ability not only to withstand the additional power input, less mind harnessing it for use later in the casting stroke was no accident. The experi-ence gained in the early days of the project have led to a thoroughly modern range of single handed rods in addition to the double handed rods for which Zpey has won many awards.

Whilst the rods are rightly classed as being underarm-style casting tools, the versa-tility of the blanks that they have been built on have surprised many a traditionalist with their ability, progressive action and reserved power. With the finest and most technological carbon fibre and resins being utilised in their manufacture, backed up by a comprehensive array of reels, lines and leaders - all sympathetically produced to enhance the Zpey experience, it can honestly be said that this is one brand that is Redefining Flyfishing.

Following the completion of the design for our double handed series, we concen-trated on producing the technology in our single handed rods. This led to the de-velopment of our Switch Rod series. To do this, we adapted our Zpey handle to the single handed format, and made it removable. You simply choose between a little traditional butt and the Zpey handle, and you can just as simply swap between these in a matter of seconds. With the handle attached the single handed rod suddenly be-comes a little two-hander, which employs the same casting principles as the double handed versions, where the lower hand plays the most important role and the upper hand is held closer to the body.

When you load the rod through the casting motion (the combined effect of the cast-ing hand and the double haul hand) and you then stop both hands, at first you sense some kind of delay, and then the catapult kick races through the carbon fibres as the rod unloads. An action like this will fit various casting styles and levels of casters. Then we attach the bent handle and almost magically the rod changes character. It’s still a single hand rod, if you want it to be, but also a light double hand rod. The double hand abilities of Zpey Switch have astounded everybody. The handle makes it more natural to focus on the lower hand and, of course, the pathway of the same hand is longer than what it would have been with a straight rod.

Arve Evensen took out a Global patent on the Zpey handle and is the founder and administrative direc-tor of Zpey system. He is already recognised as on of the worlds leading fly rod developers.

Henrik Mortensen has worked professionally with the design and develop-ment of rods and flyfishing equipment for more than 22 years. He was at the fore-front of the discontinuation of the old AFTM system, which was replaced by the unique gram-weight system for rods, as currently used by most leading manufacturers. Henrik is internationally ac-knowledged as one of the world’s best fly casters and is the most used instructor in Europe, and he has instruct-ed thousands of fly fisher-men on all continents.

“True Blue” rods have a more powerful action than rods from the other two series; not as deep and with shorter stroke lengths, but still parabolic and with the same kind of “explosive” carbon used in the other rods. An action that is sometimes necessary when casting big and heavy flies, when the wind refuses to cooperate and, of course, when one of the really big ones grab your fly and refuses to cooperate. Developed for those parts of the earth that are usually coloured an envious shade of blue, these saltwater rods are ideal for Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon and a myriad of other species that once hooked, really want to be as far away from you as possible. They are also suitable for Bass, Sea Trout, Pike and single handed rod fishing for Salmon. The switch handle acts as a great fighting butt and during a long day on the water is a provider of relief to the casting arm due to the shorter casting mo-tion required to cast long distances.

Z1Z1 SERIES

Whilst faster in action than either the Lean Green or the Real Steel models, the Z1 still retains the assured progressive nature of those blanks whilst com-bining a faster action and crisper response into this large range of rods. Span-ning between 9’ # 4 to 11’ #8 models, the rods are suitable for a versatile range of assignments and lend themselves well to the mobile angler who spreads his hobby over a number of differing locations and water types. INSTINCT SERIES

Following the success of the “First Edition” series of rods, and far from sitting on their laurels (of which there were many to sit upon!), the Zpey design team, having proven that the concept of “bent handle” rods was a success, set about the improvement and refinement of the original concepts, theories and practices. The result is the Instinct Series of double handed rods.

With the alterations made to the handle design, the team set-about design-ing a blank which would perform in-line with the abilities of the handle to produce greater momentum, tighter loops, further distances and all with a shorter stroke length than conventional fly fishing rods. This involves the use of much more carbon in the production of the rod blank in order to cope with the additional input of power, giving a better response to the rod tip and more control to the caster. The result is this range of parabolic actioned rods with great depth in their performances. The more pressure put on the rod to perform = the better they cope with the demands.

The “First Edition” rods needed a period of accustomisation whereby the caster needed to slightly change their method of casting and make certain allowances for the radical new design that the rod represented. The reward was longer, straighter casts with much less effort or strain than with con-ventional double handed rods. The INSTINCT series has now dispensed with the “running-in” period, and is much more natural in the hand, even to less experienced casters. There is less of a critical balance to the set-up, allow-ing for greater confidence to be built-up with the rod as they get to know it, allowing the caster to still have the advantages of a natural focus on using the lower hand as the main engine when casting, and a longer and more ef-fective pathway for the same hand. Additionally, the flattened lower part of the handle will make it much easier for you to cast along the straight lines a good cast requires.

12’ 8/9A 5 piece rod with a little bit more back-bone than it’s lighter brother, the 7/8, this model is ideal for more medium sizes rivers or flows requiring a greater degree of line control, larger flies and longer casting distances.

14’ 6” 9/10A real workhorse of a rod, but with some subtlety built in, allowing the angler to enjoy the power and feeling of such a capable rod. Larger rivers and flows are effortless for this model - really good when using for sunk line work and larger flies and flows.

15’ 10/11Despite its long length and powerful ability, this rod is much easier to handle than seems so on paper. It is very good at throwing long lines with great precision and presentation, allowing for dense lines, polyleaders and large flies to be turned over in the air, prior to alighting on the water.

INSTINCT RANGE

The range consists of 6 models, ranging from 12’ to 15’ in a wide range of line classes. Each of the rods are classed with an AFTM line rating, in addition to a Gram and a Grain weight for matching shooting head line kits with them. Zpey produce a specifically matched shooting head line for each of the rods in a variety of different densities to suit all fishing and casting conditions.

IMAGE FLY REELS

Manufactured from aircraft grade aluminium bar stock, the IMAGE series of reels from Zpey have arrived ! Three models in two different finishes, with capacities ranging from 160M - 200M of backing depending on the model and line weight stored on the reel. The reels are equipped with a self-lu-bricating disk-drag brake in addition to also having an exposed rim for ad-ditional palm control.

The powerful disc-drag can be adjusted perfectly by a handy drag knob, al-lowing for finely-tuned control of the brake when necessary. The drag is sealed, which when combined with the reels all-aluminium construction, make them suitable for use in the saltwater environment. The foot of the reel is constructed in an oval shape, allowing fly leaders to be wound around it without fear of damage to, or weakening of the leader.

The futuristic design of the reels have been well received, and the see-through nature of the branding on the rear plate of the reel is indeed a distin-guishing feature, a factor befitting a reel of this high quality.

Fusion Shooting Head System

This is a proven line system that is completely adjustable to your personal physics and the unique fishing situations you face. Overhead and Spey casting will be easier and more efficient, enabling you to fish all spots on the water, particularly those difficult spots that usually hold the largest fish. The Zpey Fusion line has many similarities to the traditional weight forward line. However, the big difference is that Zpey Fusion offers 40 more combination opportunities in every line class.

Innovatively, Zpey has graded all the heads in three densities, ensuring that the depth to be achieved by your chosen line is at the business end, allowing the rear-end of the shooting line to remain higher in the water, easier to extract for the next cast, and keeping you in direct touch with your fly and its performance through the run. Floating lines are designated as “0”, hence the sink-tip is a 0/0/1, or a type 5 sinker as a 3/4/5.

Zpeed Shooting Head Running Line

This is a low memory, neutral density, oval-profile running line for shooting head fly lines. It is available as a 32Lb. or 50Lb. BS line on 40M spools, depending on the line type, water type and quarry being fished for. Due to its polymer base, the line becomes ultra-slick once wet and assists in gaining extra distance on those longer casts. It is regarded by those in the casting fraternity to be one of the best mono-based running lines on the market today.

Fusion Running Lines

Finally, a range of Shooting Head running lines which excel at their purpose and which are suited to even non-experienced casters. The Zpey Fusion running lines are coated lines (not unlike a normal fly line) which are measured and matched to the job at hand. Their specific thickness (0.28, .32 or .36) have a dramatic effect on the front portion of the head being cast - they are the difference be-tween effortless casting all day long and a day that you would rather forget.

Due to their specific thickness and weight, they assist the turnover of the shoot-ing head by slowing down the rate of travel of the head, this in-turn harnesses the energy within the cast, giving a stabilising effect to the line as a whole, re-sulting in better turn-over of leaders and flies and ultimateley presenting a bet-ter fishing cast to your quarry. They are the key element to extracting the best performance from your shooting head.

All the fusion Shooting heads are equipped with the smallest looped ends on the market today, ensuring no loss of energy transfer and maintaining that crucial link between the head and the running line. These loops travel through most rod rings almost unnoticed, so small and well made are they.

This distance-enabling WF line has been designed to provide precise positioning and delicate presentation while overhead casting at any distance. The line classes #3 - #5 have been created to present nymph, dry flies and wet flies very delicately on the surface, tricking any selective trout. Line Reference System

Our new to the market Line Refer-ence System has two major purposes. It works both as an indicator of which line class you are using (just count the bars) and as a loading zone. For some anglers it can be hard to tell when to lift the line off the water and begin a new cast. When retrieving the line wait for the LRS black bars to pass through your line hand before lifting the line off the water and beginning a new cast. This will allow you to have full control over your line. And in the following false cast you should let a little line slide through your hand until you have at least some of the LRS outside of the top guide. This way you will be able to load the rod and send the line out over the water again. Some anglers can hold more line outside the top of the rods and some less. When the whole LRS is hanging outside the top guide while casting you will be able to achieve max load on the rod and full distance on your cast.

PolyleadersHighly tuned, density rated can be matched to specific shooting head weights, these Polyleaders provide that crucial link between leader and line. They ensure that sufficient “anchor” is given during spey casting, loading the rod properly for the forward cast in addition to the much more mundane task of achieving the required depth at the business end of the casters line. Polyleaders perform the task of “settling” the energy transferred through to the tip of the shooting head, making the line, and therefore the cast, more manageable. All our different densities (Intermediate, type 2,3,4,5 & 6) are colour coded to match our Fusion Shooting Heads as well as being colour coded to signify their rate of descent.They are available in single handed or double handed profiles and lengths.
