Nothing about Swanzie's mrriage or her husband Fulqri-e was -remotely ordinary, nor Fulque'sadventiues as a. First World War pilot, as a cavalqman with the American forces in China or as astuntlnan in the filin of Ben IIur. Swanzie became a Geographer at Patrick Geddes' Couege des Ecossaisin Moutpeuier, and conceivably, perhaps, they might have settled down to an.ordinary acadendc career- but they were not made for such things, and conditions were far from ordinary al the UhiversityCdiege of Fort Ihie in the Eastern Cape. For of us will have the extraordinary distinction of beingthrown out of South Affica for opposition to Apartheid; and one of the finest dociiments I have everseen is the huge handwhtten, poster-sized testhonial to Fulque and Swanrie from the Afican studentsinhonourOftheircourageinresistingoppression.

I nyself began to know Swa]rie when I was a small child and she was head of the Royal Ballet School,Nothing ordimry about the school at White Lodge. Swanzie had a wonderful love of gardening, andwas furious when a film crew Spiced up the already lovely school rose gardens with plastic roses. Shecared passionately about the.children at the Ballet School, was detemined that their dancing vocatic`nshdyd not interfere with the broadest possiible education. She packed them off around I,ondon tomuseums and exhibitions and then chased them out into Richmond Park to play British Bulldogs. Sheinspired a most exhaordinay affedion in her staff and her pupils at the Ballot School, who wouldsometimes bring her very far from ordinry dfts. Chce, at an age 6f near seventy, Swanziemarched my sister and I off to an Edirfuch Fringe production called `Futtlre Shock' - whch tiimedout to be ap extremely loud dramtised rock concert. She was to me personally an endless.source ofencouragement and support; until her health hardly permitted it, she would come to my plays andconceds, often with the other inhabitants of Choft an RIgh in tow. Even in her very frail last years shewould find recniits to propel her round the M]seum of hfrodem Art in a wheelchair, barely al>le tobreathe.

I feel that I have hardly beg`in to descrfue the essentially extraordinary quafty of this remarkable lady.Perhaps it's a hopeless task; she was so many different people, at once the proud and dignified aristocratmuch interested in her lineage, and the frugal and sometimes decidedly eccentric cook who used tomalce me onion quiche utag neither eggs nor erean: "Wed, my dear, the waste!" One moment she'd besolermly pmosophical, the ned hilariously - even wickedly - fumy. None of us can quite believe that§he's gone. Quite recently, Swa]rie wrote a memoir of her own life to which she added a few thoughtson mortality, beSnning as follows:Some Affican cultures believe qe dead to hover clout the home, influencing the tlioughts and doings ofthe living until such titne as mourning adjusts to bereavement. A year later, in a ceremony of laying torest, the dead are inded to depart to the spirit world where they will join.the ancestral soul in thekeeping of the royal chief of the thlje or dan.

Well I can tell you, a. year from now the spirit world of Clan Agnew of Lochnaw are in for a ddigFffi]lsuprise. I do believe they'll come to relish her company. i

The suppositioii ti],at my nane Swanzie is derived from' Swinsea,. the.+Welch iseaport , may be explained by my name, and that of the port, `hhaving both been angpicised and the apelling changed from .the originalDlitchandwdshlangunges.

The present name Swansea, for. the sea port is thowht to have becknamed after Sweyn Forkbeard. Forkbeard is commemorated for thefirst recorded nalne as Swqu's-ey. The meaning being Sweyn's seainlet.' h later centuries the name changes, prior to 1184 AD toSweyn'esse. But in a medieval seal attached to a tour document, thename Swevsea. brings the mane nearer to modem usage of Swansea.Foricheard seems to rbe fading from memory in favour of the specialcharacter of swans. '

As to Swalizie, my aunt had already cringed it' from, the Dutch meaning

#,;svlni::toinan#f\#::gg=T.eo#:dog#em?grandfather favoured the name as. connoting somching special ,in-givingthis nan6 to his daughter. Just as a saint:s nane, such''as St. Margaret

It is only recently tiiat I have become aware of the belief that swans areholy and are honoured in song, dance and mythology since prechristiantines in association with pagan relirions. The belief still occurs. from the

#cth#rqinap;apse=+:yEftiEon¥BgcTi:#b£=1999, a wild<1ife programme documenting the aprfug arrival of theDancing Craiies and Hopper Swans, flighting in upon the shattered watersof the island of Hckkaide, in Nbrthern Japan. With the arrival of thenrigrating birds, the Ainl people, of a pre-Mongoloid race, called"Archaic Whites", celebrate the coming of spring. The women then

perforin ritual dances in initation of the mating postures of dancingcranes. Ijikewise the` arrival of the Hooper Swans there is further

Further evidence of the `holy' aspect of swans may be inustr`al;d in aPassage in the travel book In Siberia by colin Thubrori (1999 pl 15-6).h the course of his travels he sailed down the Yenisei river by steamer .toDundika, which lies at the estuary to the Arctic Ocean . On boardhe fellinto conversation with a hunter called Vadim. This man drew hisattention to hunters' dugouts, scarcely visible in the reeds of the marshesbordering that stretch of the river. The hunters apparently were waitingfor the flichts of geese from the Tundra, winging their way south to escapethe oncoming winter. Besides these species there were widgech* andcoots, as weu as `the near holy" cranes and swans, that no hunter evershot. ®115) Colin Thubron asked Vadin " Why won't you kill a swan?""A swan!". Helooked shocked ,,.,"Oh", he said. "I couldn't touch a swan!".

Little did Vadin iealise he was2asserting a belief in the s;ered status ofswans going back in time to the Greeks and other ancient people.

This association betiveen Godhead and the swans may be seen in th'elegend of zeus posing as a. swan in order to rape Leda, jfrom whom Helenand other godlings were father?,d by Zeus. Notice the disguise of zeus inthe shape of a swan underwhes the swan as being the means or the sacredinstrument,. which the supreme God-head used in his dealirig with earthlywomarfuood. The association of the sacred swan as an intercessor withthe supreme God, was finally transferred to that of the rionarch, who bythe inposition of the `Divine right of Kings" established the right to thesole ownership of God's messengers the swans. The ceremony ofcounting the Royal swans is performed in London in the pageant of Swan-upping on the Thanes.

So at last in old age, I no longer wish to disown` my Dane; but ddight inknowing that "Zwaantje" will intercede with the Gods on lny behalf.

Perhaps you are aware th?t this Entlishgentleman, who bought the Lochnaw properties from M. He hasalready completed the excavation of what was once a walled terrace or courtyard on thesouth end of the.Castle. h Ms.Rustand's letter, she makes reference to "climbing the Isteps to the Southern Courtyard". h one of the photographs which I an enclosing (# 7)',

I an not clear on why it was demolished, noris it clear who filled the hole and created the courtyard, but it was definitely filled inwhen my mother and ny children visited. Note the fireplace and other unidentifiedrooms in the excavated area, all of which had been covered up for years.

I have also included a 10-inch long photograph ofthe Loch which I took from the top of the Keep and which shows Lochnaw Island9 site ofthe original eleventh centiny castle. When my son visited Lochnaw in 1984, he rowed outto the island but was unable to locate any trace of the old foundations.

Onephotograph(#10)Ineglectedtomentionisthatofanoldstaine491asswindowfacing the main entrance and containing the Agnew Coat of Ams. I don't know whatroom it is in, but perhaps you or my children may recall. It is quite beautiful andphotographed well. Ms. Rustand's letter in 1995 refers to two suchwindows, bu-t I wasunable to locate a second one. She also describes the window as an oriSnal 14th centuryTiffany. I certainly can't dispute or verify that - perhaps you can. If she is Correct, thewindow(orwindows)certainlyispriceless.hthepictureofmywifeandmestandingbythe red door at the entrance to the Castle (#11), the location of this stained glass windowis visible - it js the second window to the right over my head

As we departed from Lochnaw, I paused to have my picture taken by the gate (#12), towhich is attached a sign `Lochnaw Castle", and under that the word "Private". It struckme then that this word meant "no admittance" not only to the public at large but tomembersoftheAgnewClanaswell.Iansogratefulthat1hadthe.opporfunitytovisitthe Castle before it became inpossible to do so, even though it was not exactly in mintcondition. I'm sure that a great many Ainews must feel a similar sense of sadness withthe realization that afte.r nearly six centuries - our Castle is no longer our Castle.

P. S. While we were visiting Lochnaw, we spent two evenings at a lovely bed andbreakfast called Kildrochet House, owned and operated by M. and Ms.P. St. J.Whitworth, located a few kilometers southeast of Strauraer. It is a beautiful old homebuilt in 1723, and according to M. St. J. Whitworth, it was owned or at least occupied atone time by a cousin of yours, whose name, as I recall, is Malco]m Wallace.

It is their intention to restore the Victorian gardens as well as the walled garden, `^rty.ch, it is hoped, may also be open to the public. "Really it will be lovely. We are lucky that such a person has boughtover this site", a Tree Press" source revealed.

M Nightingale, now in his 30s, was born in Scotland, although he works abroad he is keen to returnto his native land.

Talks have been on-going with the rectonal planners in Stranraer and tiuilding control, HistoricScotland and Scottish Natural Heritage, so that the final plans have complete approval and everyoneis happy with.

At the moment students from Edinburgh University are carrying out an archaeological dig on anisland in the middle of the loch at the castle, but it is iiot known if the work is connected.

Mr NIghtingale, who is not fond of publicity, has made it clear that he does not `^rant to reveal muchinfomation until detailed plans are put forward, but he `manted consideral]le effort put into thereseareh before work got underway.

He is also looking at raising the funds to cover the vast costs of upgrading the Class A listed buildingand it is thought that the work will be spread over a number Of years.

Claims thatthe castle u.as to be knocked do`^m and time+share chalets built were completely .discounted by his agent. "There is nothing else behind this. We urould not be alloved to knock downthe building". He addecl that rumours and gossip should be ignored, but they were prepared to discussmore details at a later stage.
