Students may choose from the following teaching areas:• Biology and General Science (grades 9-12)• English Language Arts (grades 5-8* or 9-12)• General Science (grades 5-8*)• Mathematics (grades 5-8* or 9-12)• Physical Education (grades K-12)• Social Studies (grades 5-8* or 9-12) *The Master of Arts in Teaching Middle Grades program (grades 5-8) is a joint program with the College of Charleston. Applicants choose a home institution and apply through that Graduate School.

Counselor EducationMaster of Education in Counselor Education: Elementary or Secondary School CounselingThe School Counseling degree program is designed for individuals who want to enter the school system as a school counselor. Students who successfully complete the program will obtain both a graduate degree and recommendation for licensure through the state to become a school counselor.

Master of Education in Counselor Eduation: Student Affairs and College Counseling The Student Affairs in College Counseling degree program is designed for individuals who aspire to work (or currently work) in higher education institutions. Students accepted into this degree program will automatically be accepted into the Graduate Certificate in Student Affairs program.

South Carolina State Licensure Programs (Non-Degree):Elementary or Secondary School Counseling CertificationApplicants who hold a master’s degree in another area of professional education or counseling and wish to add school counseling certification may pursue this program.

Graduate Certificate in Student Affairs The Graduate Certificate in Student Affairs provides individuals with the skills to engage students in active learning while building supportive and inclusive communities within institutions of higher education.

Educational LeadershipSpecialist in Educational Leadership: School Superintendent The Specialist in Educational Leadership is an advanced graduate degree between the Master’s and Doctoral degrees. In accordance with South Carolina Certification Regulations, The Citadel offers this degree to prepare candidates for certification as school superintendent.

Master of Education in Educational Leadership: Elementary or Secondary School Administration and SupervisionThe program prepares individuals with varied leadership and management skills and an understanding and practical knowledge of classroom organization. Human and public relations issues in education are also explored. Successful completion of degree results in recommendation for licensure through the state as elementary or secondary school principals and supervisors.

South Carolina State Licensure Programs (Non-Degree): Elementary or Secondary School Administration and Supervision Certificate Applicants who hold a valid SC teaching certificate and a master’s degree in a different area of professional education and wish to add administration certification may apply to this program.

Zucker Family School of EducationThe Zucker Family School of Education is a premier professional school that offers graduate degrees through its four academic divisions - Literacy Education, Teacher Education, Counselor Education, and Educational Leadership.

Literacy EducationThe Literacy Education division of the Zucker Family School of Education offers two graduate programs for students seeking to advance their literacy knowledge. The programs meet the “Read to Succeed” legislation in South Carolina for literacy education and are nationally recognized by the International Literacy Association (ILA).

Master of Education in Literacy Education Completion of the Master’s in Literacy Education degree program provides eligibility for certification of teachers as both Literacy Teacher and Literacy Coach and meets the state requirement of “Read to Succeed” Endorsement. Students accepted into this degree program will automatically be accepted into the Graduate Certificate in Literacy Education program.

Graduate Certificate in Literacy EducationThe Graduate Certificate in Literacy Education is a certificate program in Literacy Education which meets the “Read to Succeed” Endorsement and consists of 5 literacy courses. Successful completion of the 5 courses provides eligibility for certification as a Literacy Teacher. Applicants may also pursue the certificate for professional advancement without becoming licensed.

Teacher EducationMaster of Arts in Teaching (MAT)The Teacher Education programs are designed for individuals who have never been certified to teach and would like to begin a career in the teaching profession. Students who successfully complete the MAT program will obtain both a graduate level education and recommendation for licensure to teach.
