C O N C E P T - 02 -

The original concept for the chair came after an investigation into the possibility of creat-ing a piece of furniture that could be more than what it seemed at first glance and also incorporate different meanings. This lead to an investigation of a number of artists work-ing within the genre of op -art such as Bridget Riley, M. C Escher, Victor Vasarely and most specifically Markus Raetz. The sculptural work of Raetz and his technique of merging two forms into one seemed like an interesting process and something that had potential to be incorporated into a piece of furniture.

C O N C E P T - 04 -

After experimenting with a number of differ-ent combinations of form combinations ( :), :(, X,O, chair/not chair etc.) I found that the forms that were the most useful for the con-struction of a chair needed to be simple and structural (ie. minimum amount of curves/no floating objects and the ability to support a person). The final concept attempts to rec-oncile the limitations of the chair form, the process of the optical illusion and the idea of multiple co-existing meanings.
