Disk drivesDisk drives• The number and type of disk drives installed in an XP disk array is
flexible– Disks must be added in groups of four
• Additional capacity can be installed over time as capacity needs grow– New technology (faster/larger) disks might become available for future
upgrades• All disks use the industry-standard dual ported 2Gb/s FC-AL interface
– Each disk is connected to both of the redundant ACPs in a pair by separate Fibre Channel arbitrated loops
• Spare drives are automatically used in the event of a disk drive failure

Cache memory
• Cache memory is used temporarily to store data from the host until it is written to disk and to stage data requested by the host from the disk
• All cache is backed up by a fully redundant 48‑hour battery
• XP disk arrays have global ECC mirrored cache
• Cache usage is governed by user-established, performance based policies, not physical partitions.
• 4 GB to 128 GB of cache can be installed in Cache Platform pairs
Sept 2004 HP Restricted 20
Shared memory
• Shared memory is separate from the cache memory and is used to store control information, freeing up the cache memory exclusively for user data
• Shared memory is also used to store system configuration information such as system components mapping, LUN maps, cache pointers, and RAID levels
• All shared memory is backed up by a fully redundant 48-hour battery
• The Shared Memory in the XP12000 is mirrored
• 1 GB to 12 GB of Shared Memory can be installed in an XP12000 (Max Shared Memory at launch is 6 GB. The additional SM Platform Board is not available)

XP12000/XP1024/XP128 license key strategy
Each software license key generated is unique and based on the following criteria
• Software product
• Array serial number
• Hardware platform (XP12000 or XP1024 or XP128)
• Capacity value (number of TBs ordered)
• Existing capacity (number of TBs on the array)
HPAC is the license key retrieval site for all NSS SW titles
• The HPAC tracks all of the above information to ensure the proper license keys are generated
• Therefore, every license key must be obtained through the HPAC

Example — Software on a 4TB capacity upgrade• For software license upgrades, customers buy same products in quantities to
bump them up to the desired total license capacity, starting with the installed license capacity already on the system and working through the tiers for the appropriate capacity levels
• Example–Cache LUN XP (raw capacity license) upgrade purchase:– Customer has a 11.5TB raw capacity system with 12TB installed license
capacity. Buys 4TB raw upgrade disk (bringing the total raw storage capacity of the array up to15.5TB)
– Requires at least 3.5TB (15.5TB–12TB) additional license capacity for Cache LUN XP
– Round 3.5TB up to the nearest TB, purchase 4TB license capacity for a total of 16TB:

Sept 2004 HP Restricted 53
Example — Software on 18TB initial system
Example: External Storage XP 18TB purchase
To provide for 18TB total license capacity for the software, the customer would order the following

XP12000/XP1024/XP128 license key — License terms and enforcement
For XP1024/XP128 firmware-based software, license capacity limits are enforced
• BC XP, CA XP, CA XP Extension, LUN Security XP Extension, and External Storage XP
– These products are licensed based on used capacity
– For configuration they must first expand software license capacity by purchasing and installing license capacity upgrades
• LUN Configuration and Security Manager XP, Cache LUN XP, and Auto LUN XP
– These products are licensed based on the total raw capacity of the array
– When the array raw capacity exceeds the license capacity of the software, the user gets warning messages telling them to upgrade the license capacity
