Dean's Message
03
2009 is the 25th year of the founding of Tsinghua SEM, since Tsinghua Univer-
sity School of Economics and Management has been formally established in
1984. This year would also be regarded as the 30th anniversary of the School
because Tsinghua University has established the Department of Economics
and Management Engineering and begun the enrollment of post-graduate stu-
dents since 1979.
During the past three decades, Tsinghua SEM has graduated more than
13,000 students in degree programs; the School also provided more than
30,000 students with non-degree courses at the mean time. Taking SEM as
a starting point of their new life journey, SEM alumni have made exceptional
contributions in China and even worldwide.
The top 10 influential people in China's economic realm were named at
CCTV's awards ceremony for the 2008 China Economic Annual Figures at the
beginning of 2009. Among the honorees, there are three SEM alumni. They
are SI Zefu, General Manager of the Dongfang Electric Corporation (SEM
MBA Class of 1993); CHEN Guangbiao, President of Jiangsu Huangpu Invest-
ment (EMBA Class of 2008), and LIU Shaoyong, President of China Eastern
Airlines (EMBA Class of 2002). Additionally, SI Zefu and CHEN Guangbiao
won the top prize in the awards. We feel quite honored for having them as our
alumni.
On the occasion of Tsinghua University’s 98th anniversary celebrations, Tsin-
ghua SEM issued its first alumni interview collections-“ The Lives of Tsinghua
SEM Alumni”. The book records thirty-nine SEM alumni’s life journey, including
their study and work experience, their life understandings, as well as mes-
sages to their juniors. And more stories about outstanding SEM alumni will be
published in the future.
The School cherishes every achievement made by SEM alumni. Tsinghua
SEM is always the home for you all.

Programs
Since June 29, 182 sophomores of Tsinghua SEM have left Beijing for the countryside of Yangtze River
Basin to conduct a 10-day on-the-spot investigation as Tsinghua SEM 2009 summer field trip has for-
mally kicked off. The theme of this year's summer field trip is "current situation of health care system in
Chinese rural areas". The participants were divided into 16 teams, with research covering 16 cities/coun-
ties in areas along Yangtze River. The program is launched on the occasion of the reform of China's
health care system. On April 6, Chinese government has issued a guideline on fixing the ailing health
care system after over five months of debate and revision. It kicked off the long-anticipated reform to
ensure health care service is more accessible and affordable to the country's 1.3 billion people.
During the summer field trip period, SEM students have visited the health care departments of local
governments with different levels, approached and interviewed the rural doctors and patients there
and conducted relevant surveys. The students have submitted the summary individually after the prac-
tice, including "the practice of feelings" and "cases of rural doctors".

// MBA //
Tsinghua SEM’s MBA program registered with the TeamMBA Web site on May 4, becom-
ing the organization’s first-ever Chinese member. Sponsored by GMAC® (the Graduate

troduce the newest members of the executive committee. In his speech, Zhang spoke of strengthening ties between alumni and
building connections with international students. He called for closer relationships with the community, the corporate sector, and
sister MBA programs, as well as public service and media partnerships to raise the profile of Tsinghua’s MBA program. MBA alumni
representatives from about a dozen sister schools also attended the event.
The international teams made up of 8 students from both MIT Sloan and 8 from
Tsinghua SEM have carried out this year's China Lab Project here at Tsinghua during
March 14-29.
The name list of 2008 Top Ten Chinese University Students was released in Beijing on April 29,

Each team comprised of two MIT Sloan students and two Tsinghua SEM IMBA students. Their work mainly focuses on providing
professional consulting service to a certain program of a collaborating company within three months. Students helped to solve
practical problems concerning corporate operation, provide proposals on the company’s marketing strategies, business plans and
competition analysis report for four companies including Credit Ease, Tarena, Dintaifung, and CCTV GoldenBridge. China Lab grows
out of a collaboration that began in 1996, when MIT Sloan established the MIT-China Management Education Project to strengthen
graduate management education at selected Chinese universities. The Project originated with Tsinghua University in Beijing and
Fudan University in Shanghai. Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou and Yunnan University in Kunming
have since joined.
Tsinghua SEM is building on its Alumni Mentorship Program with a new
initiative known as the Alumni Network Program (ANP), launched in March
2009.
The ANP, designed to encourage MBA alumni to share their knowledge,
will create a social network members can turn to for professional and
personal guidance. Beginning in select cities, the program will eventually
expand into a network connecting Tsinghua MBA alumni nationwide and
worldwide. The Beijing Tsinghua MBA Alumni Club, a Beijing-based pilot
program, kicks off in 2009.
// EMBA //
Tsinghua SEM has welcomed nearly 30 Tsinghua EMBA
alumni who are attending the annual sessions of Na-
tional People’s Congress (NPC) and Chinese People's
Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on March
9th. At the invitation of the School, deputies from the
Chinese top legislature and the country's top advisory
body took part in a discussion session concerning the
hot topics of current affairs, bringing their insights with

PCC sessions. Among all the deputies attending this
year’s annual sessions of NPC and CPPCC, 27 are from
Tsinghua EMBA community, including 21 NPC depu-
ties and 6 CPPCC deputies. EMBA alumni deputies
exchanged their views on their NPC/CPPCC proposals
and the latest development of their own industries
with the participating professors at the session.

The Spring 2009 Seminar on Current Economic Situation took
place at Tsinghua SEM on March 28. Co-sponsored by the Center
for China in the World Economy (CCWE) and the Office of Alumni
Affairs, the event drew a diverse audience of over 300, including
