Rift Valley Fever risk assessment and early warning initiatives (risk assessment/early warning/monitor)Description

In Madagascar the focus will be on the use of weather and climate information in support of health services.

Scientific Opinion on Rift Valley fever1: risk assessment on introduction of RVF in Mediterranean Basin

The RVF Early Warning System at FAO is based on the approach developed by NASA [1]. The risk of RVF occurrence is assessed/evaluated using three parameters: (a) Precipitation forecasts issued by IRI (Columbia University) on monthly basis; (b) El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forecasts issued by IRI on monthly basis;(c) RVF risk maps produced by FAO on monthly basis (based on NDVI and rainfall anomalies).

EMPRES Global Animal Disease Information System (EMPRES-i) is a web-based application that has been designed to support veterinary services by facilitating the organization and access to regional and global disease information.

The Joint FAO–OIE–WHO Global Early Warning System for health threats and emerging risks at the human–animal–ecosystems interface

Improved joint FAO–OIE–WHO Global Early Warning System for health threats and emerging risks at the human–animal–ecosystems interface: GLEWS+ : cross-sectoral iterative risk assessment at human-animal-environment interface.

To validate weather forecasts in West Africa in summer monsoon season. In the ESP group, the focus is always on supporting research in, for, and with developing countries.

This research, which spans the fields of human and animal health, parasitology, statistics, spatial modelling and environmental science, has the potential to deliver significant evidence to the holistic One Health movement

Development of Alert System for Outbreaks of Yellow Fever and Rift Valley Fever in Kenya

To increase the European capacity for real-time or near-real time surveillance and monitoring of the health burden of expected and unexpected health related events. Inventory of existing and proposed syndromic surveillance systems in Europe, including country visits for an in-depth understanding of selected systems. The project will also provide scientific and technical guidance for the development and implementation of syndromic surveillance systems for both human and animal health

Countermeasures to Prevent, Mitigate, and Control Rift Valley Fever (Rvf)

Monitoring and predicting disease outbreaks early. DoD Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center's Global Emerging Infections System (AFHSC-GEIS) Operations Division in collaboration with AFHSC-GEIS GIMMS Group at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC), and the USDA-ARS Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology (USDA-ARS CMAVE) accomplishes that goal, at least for one disease: Rift Valley fever (RVF).

Develop a geographic information system (GIS)/remotely sensed early warning model system for potential Rift Valley fever (RVF) risk in the US using mosquito population surveillance data collected by mosquito control and public health agencies, and climate data measured by satellites, such as vegetation index and land surface temperature, and terrestrial weather stations; develop mathematical and simulative models of RVFV epidemiology in the US to test a variety of mitigation strategies, including vaccine development and deployment, reduction and control of mosquito populations, and livestock movement reduction and ban.

Using the tele-epidemiology technique developed in 2003 for the Ferlo region in Senegal, by the French Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) allowed realizing dynamic maps of cattle exposure risk to RVF carriers by associating triggering factors such as rain events, carriers’ density (Aedes vexans and Culex poicilipes) and hosts’ presence (livestock): the wet season of 2009/2010 is used to validate this method through a study (entomological measures and animal health surveys) in the Ferlo region and to combine this with Socio-economic surveys and regarding climate change: to study the impact of climate variability (from seasonal to low frequencies, including trends and climate changes) on pluviometry and therefore on risk forecast.

Aim

FAO Animal Health Manual No. 15 Contingency planning

(back to KEY)

Health communication and training of local (animal) health workers on Rift Valley Fever in Tanzania

diagnosis of animal diseases; epidemio-surveillance; fieldvalidation of diagnostic tests, looking into potential RVF vectors

Mathematical model was developed to study RVF outbreak probability and spread: risk maps were created.

Partner states have formulated a multi-sectoral task force of experts on RVF to review the situation and prepare an action plan for emergency preparedness and response.

Regional Plan of action for Rift Valley Fever (RVF) Emergency preparedness and response in East Africa

Strategy for a comprehensive Rift Valley Fever (RVF) public awareness campaign at community, national and regional levels in East Africa.

To study recent and longer standing infection with RVF in both people and livestock. The exposure status in livestock and people will be coupled with vector mosquito studies in the same localities. In the seasonal flooding plains of the Kilombero river valley which mimics unusual precipitation increase on annual basis.

Page 44: 2011. 2013. 2008. 2013. 2012. 2003. 2011. 2012. 2012. 2011. 2013. 2009. 2013. 2001. 2004. 2010. 2009. 2013. 2004. 2006. 2013. 2013. 2009. 2007. 2008. 1978. 2001. 2004. 2007. 2007

Multiple activities and outputs on Rift Valley Fever

Guidelines, information on disease outbreaks and more

Outbreak containment system of YF and RVF is strengthened in Kenya through the development of rapid diagnostics and establishment of a sustainable outbreak vigilance and response mechanism.

A new compartmentalized ordinary differential equation model of RVF to assess disease spread in both time and in space; with the latter driven as a function of contact networks. Humans and livestock hosts and two species of vector mosquitoes are included in the model. The model is based on weighted contact networks, where nodes of the networks represent geographical regions and the weights represent the level of contact between regional pairings for each set of species

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is the national public health insitute for South Africa. It provides reference microbiology, virology, epidemiology, surveillance and public health research to support the government's response to communicable disease threats.

1300 blood samples from selected EMINI participants are examined to establish epidemiological data on six arbovirus infections (Chikungunya, Dengue, Yellow Fever, Rift Valley Fever, O' nyong nyong), as well on bacterial zoonotic diseases which affect human health as well as lifestock breeding success. Among the latter are Plague, Rickettsioses and Brucellosis. Results: High seropositivity rates have been detected for Chikungunya, Flaviviridae and Rift Valley Fever from sites with a proximity to large water bodies.

Preparedness RVF (veterinary epidemiology) Sweden

Conduct veterinary surveillance around quarantine and at risk areas.

Detection of disease outbreaks and inform authorities on diseases under surveillance: RVF, PPCB, PPR, FMD/vesicular disease, rabies, avian influenza, previously rinderpest, pasteurellosis camelidae

Apply diagnostic technology that has been developed in Nagasaki University to create speedy, low-cost and simplified diagnostic kits for the use of regional healthcare facilities and communities in Kenya and build a network for speedy 2-way communication between regional medical facilities and central government agencies, and put together a model early warning system for the speedy feedback of frontline diagnosis results.

Aims to reconcile different perspectives and needs from different groups/professionals (animal owners, veterinarians, researchers, policy makers) in disease control

Mapping animal holders, simulation with individual-based livestock demographic model and economic model

The primary purpose of this agreement is to establish a general framework for cooperation and establish a mechanism by which ABADRU and USAMRIID will collaborate in research on the potential for Rift Valley Fever Virus transmission by arthropod vectors in North America. It also establishes a relationship whereby each research entity can call upon the other for advice concerning research methodology and directions.

Understanding the epidemiological factors affecting disease outbreak and the inter-epizootic maintenance of RVFV: detection, characterizations; Identify determinants of RVFV infection, pathogenesis and maintenance in mammalian and insect vector hosts;better vaccine evaluation challenge model; Vaccine formulations will be developed to improve immunogenicity, onset of immunity and stability to provide better response to outbreaks and prevent RVFV epizootics

Thesis study on RVF cycles and potential vectors for RVF

Decision support, vector-control, rapid mobilisation, human and veterinary entomology

Occurrence and vector competence of mosquitoes as vectors of viruses in Germany

1: Assess the risk of endemic arthropod vectors to transmit introduced exotic arboviruses in North America. 2: Identify targets and evaluate tools for vector control and interruption of transmission cycles to protect livestock and humans from vector-borne pathogens.

The goal of this study is to quantify the population structure of the mosquito species of medical and veterinary importance in North America, Culex tarsalis (Coquillett) and Aedes vexans (Meigen). The objective is to associate identified genotypes with geographic locations and disease vector competence.

Aim

(back to KEY)

Enhancing prevention and control of RVF in East Africa by intersectoral assessment of control options; Opportunities to link with climate change Integrated health and economic assessment for control options for Rift Valley Fever in Kenya (ILRI); Assessment and technology development for Rift Valley Fever (RVF)

To identify the key factors that contribute to the emergence of pathogens from animal reservoir, with human pandemic potential from pathogens with a zoonotic background. Focus on interspecies, intrahuman and interhuman barriers

Emerging vector-borne diseases, in particular: West Nile fever, Rift Valley Fever and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever; creating common knowledge on the diseases, sharing and exchanging data, expertise, experiences and scientific information via regular meetings:to train the staff in using tools and technologies required for a specific and effective detection and differentiation of the pathogens causing the mentioned diseases, professional epidemiological studies, effective control strategies, and a better disease outbreak management

This program aims to alleviate poverty and improve the well-being of poor livestock farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia (SA). This will be achieved by reducing the negative effects of animal diseases, disease control regulations and food safety standards that constrain poor farmers from accessing and competing in domestic and global markets.

Integrated Project of the European Commission that aims to identify and catalogue those European ecosystems and environmental conditions which can influence the spatial and temporal distribution and dynamics of human pathogenic agents.

To provide evidence-based recommendations on control options for more appropriate allocation of limited resources and to facilitate multisectoral RVF planning

As per June 2010, the EpiSouth Network counts 27 Countries (9 EU and 18 non-EU), which have identified and appointed 66 Focal Points, plus 7 representatives from Collaborating Institutions: aim is to create a framework of collaboration on epidemiological issues in order to improve communicable diseases surveillance, communication and training across the countries of the Mediterranean and the Balkans.

Reinforce the European coordination and capacities for the study and the surveillance of highly pathogenic micro-organisms: the construction and implementation of a pan-European high security BSL-4 research infrastructure.

The Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) is a joint FAO/OIE initiative, a facilitating mechanism which will endeavour to empower regional alliances in the fight against transboundary animal diseases (TADs), to provide for capacity building and to assist in establishing programmes for the specific control of certain TADs based on regional priorities. The specific aim for GF-TADs is to establish sub-Regional Support Units (RSU) with a cadre of epidemiologists (REU: Regional Epidemiology Unit) and initially funded through the GF-TADs, integrated in relevant bodies (RSO: Regional Specialised Organisations)

Page 61: 2011. 2013. 2008. 2013. 2012. 2003. 2011. 2012. 2012. 2011. 2013. 2009. 2013. 2001. 2004. 2010. 2009. 2013. 2004. 2006. 2013. 2013. 2009. 2007. 2008. 1978. 2001. 2004. 2007. 2007

construction of a disease risk mapping system for three water-related high-impact VBDs (malaria, Rift valley fever and schistosomiasis) in Africa, accounting for environmental/climatic trends and changes in socio-economic conditions to predict future risk. HEALTHY FUTURES will deploy a bottom-up, end-user/stakeholder-focused approach combining field-, laboratory- and library-based research.

4 thematic sub-networks have been set up : laboratories (RELABSA), epidemiology (REPIVET), communication (RECOMSA) and socioeconomics (RESEPSA). The specific objective of REMESA is the improvement of prevention and control against the major transboundary animal diseases and zoonoses through the strengthening of the national and regional resources and capacities, the harmonization and coordination of surveillance and control activities

To address the risk of introduction, emergence and spread of known or still unknown vector-borne viruses (VBV) associated with two insect families: mosquitoes (Diptera, Culicidae of genera Aedes and Culex), and Culicoides biting midges (Diptera, Ceratopognidae) and will specifically target: Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV, Bunyaviridae, Phlebovirus), Orthobunyaviruses (Bunyaviridae, Orthobunyavirus, including Schmallenberg virus - SBV), and Orbiviruses (Reoviridae, Orbivirus, including bluetongue viruses).

The project aims to understand at a more fundamental level the climate drivers of the vector-borne diseases of malaria, Rift Valley Fever, and certain tick-borne diseases, which all have major human and livestock health and economic implications in Africa, in order to assist with their short-term management and make projections of their future likely impacts. QWeCI will develop and test the methods and technology required for an integrated decision support framework for health impacts of climate and weather.

The study of RVF vectors, the replication in the mosquito, the effect of the bacteria Wolbachia on the vector competence of mosquitoes to RVFV.
