Dear Friends,

For nearly 85 years, Messmer Catholic Schools have transformed students into successful young men and women by addressing their spiritual, academic, social and physical needs. As our Mission Statement clearly states, “Messmer Catholic Schools prepare their graduates to excel in college, to succeed in the workforce and to become productive citizens.” We work diligently every day to build character. Our faculty and sta! lead by example, teaching our students how to live their lives ethically, honestly, and above all, with integrity.

It has been said that integrity is doing the right thing even if no one is watching. "e news media have documented many unfortunate incidents recently where individuals have watched others acting without integrity and the results have been disastrous. An absence of ethical behavior has become something many people talk about, but few understand how to solve the problem. "e answer is Catholic schools!

Social skills, integrity and faith formation are at the center of what we do; this is what makes Messmer special. Our alumni, donors, friends, parents and students realize this and encourage our mission in a number of ways. Many people have dug deep in their pockets to help support us #nancially, others give of their time by volunteering and, most importantly, we are in many people’s prayers. Whatever your relationship to Messmer Catholic Schools, you stand with us every day to teach integrity, morality and values. Together, we transform lives.

Warm regards,

President and CEO Executive Vice President Principal

“I’ve been amazed at how much

Messmer has grown and have been

equally impressed to see Messmer

become an incredible collection of fine

students and wonderful faculty and

staff.”

Messmer’s longtime relationship with the Capuchin Order of Franciscans has spanned over 80 years, from Messmer’s founding at St. Elizabeth Capuchin Parish to Capuchin Friar Celestine Bittle as #rst principal of Messmer High School and culminating in a formal Partnership in Ministry in 2005. Fr. Randy Knauf continues this tradition by providing spiritual guidance to Messmer’s students, faculty and sta!.

Fr. Randy is from Marathon, Wisconsin. Marathon is a traditionally “Capuchin town” because most Capuchins have done their graduate theology work there since World War I. Fr. Randy’s exposure to the Capuchins as a child and his involvement in his high school church youth groups guided him in his decision to join the Capuchin Order.

Fr. Randy o$en re%ects upon that time in his life when he considers his work here at Messmer, as he believes it was when he was in high school that he #rst began to examine his spiritual development. “I see many students here at Messmer going through the same process as they begin to examine what they can do with their lives,” says Fr. Randy.

A$er college and a year of service, he joined the novitiate as a Brother in 1981. One day while working in Montana in the mid-‘80s, and quite out of the blue, a student asked then Br. Randy, why he didn’t choose to be a priest. "e question was blunt and direct. “I never really thought about it,” said Fr. Randy. “We work in ministries and o$en do spiritual retreats and exercises to come closer to God but

I’d never really thought about why I wanted to be a Brother or a Father.” Upon re%ection, he realized he felt a strong calling to preach and administer the Sacraments. "e question of a child helped Fr. Randy realize he wanted to become a priest. He was ordained in 1991 and proceeded to work in various parishes, universities and retreat houses in the midwest.

His 25th Jubilee provided Fr. Randy an opportunity to re%ect upon his life and spiritual development. He made a pilgrimage to Assisi to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis. During this time of re%ection, Fr. Randy reconnected to his love of education and the arts. A$er teaching "eology at St. Lawrence Seminary, he returned to Milwaukee to study Fine Arts at Cardinal Stritch University.

But Fr. Randy wanted to keep his connection to students. "is led him to become a part of Messmer Catholic Schools where he works with students, faculty and sta! on their “spiritual health.”

Fr. Randy explains, “I’ve been learning the ropes by visiting the schools’ three campuses each week.” He intentionally has no o&ce; he says, “Sometimes I just sit in the sta! room and talk with people. You’d be surprised how many important events happen every day in people’s lives.” His personal interaction allows him to help students and sta! with the loss of loved ones, theological questions, and sometimes he just o!ers a friendly ear. Fr. Randy has also presided at Masses at all campuses including a new monthly mass for faculty and sta! at the high school.

On January 4, 2010, Archbishop Listecki was installed as the 11th Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. During his installation Mass, the Archbishop stated that Catholic education would be a top priority.

A$er only three days of being installed as Milwaukee’s new Archbishop, Archbishop Listecki made a spontaneous visit to Messmer High School! He mentioned hearing great things about Messmer, its faculty and students, and he wanted to pay a visit.

During his visit he expressed joy and gratitude for the wonderful work being accomplished at Messmer and for those responsible for carrying out the

school’s mission. He also stated that he is looking forward to future visits to the high school and the Messmer grade schools and hopes to celebrate a Mass or prayer service with us in the near future.

“I can’t believe I got to meet the

Archbishop.”

“Fr. Randy has a calming presence

with his constant smile and peaceful

demeanor. The students have

recognized this and have said the same

thing.”

“Fr. Randy’s question and answer

session really helped the students

understand the call to priesthood. His

open, friendly and caring nature is not

only evident, but greatly appreciated

by both myself and my students.”

Gene Miller has been a volunteer in Ms. Augustine’s #rst grade classroom once a week since the 2007-2008 school year. Gene is a very kind and generous man and it is apparent that he cares whole-heartedly about helping improve students’ reading ability.

Gene works with four small reading groups throughout the hour he is in class. With each group, Gene reads leveled reading books and also works on phonics and sight word activities that are targeted to their ability level. Gene is very perceptive and is able to guide and tweak lessons during his group time to target issues that the students may be having. Gene takes his time and is very patient with the children, even when they get frustrated. He also does a wonderful job of providing feedback on successes and areas in need of improvement.

Even though the students only see Gene once a week, it’s obvious they value their time with him. All of the students know exactly when he is coming and look forward to having that small group interaction with a caring and motivating adult. Gene does such a great job of quickly getting to know each student’s name and story that he creates personal connections with ease. He also shows them how much he cares by reiterating to the children again and again what reading means to him.

Every year at the end of the school year, Gene picks out a book for each child that #ts the student’s reading level. He then personalizes the book for the student on the inside cover and gives it to them as a gi$. He takes the time to #nd books that cater exactly to each child’s reading and interest level. Gene makes such a di!erence in our children’s lives and for that we are so grateful.

“I am glad to have Gene as a part of

our little classroom community and

look forward to continuing to work

with him. He makes such a difference

in our children’s lives and for that I am

so grateful.”

Messmer High School juniors and seniors recently took a break from the rigors of schoolwork to attend a Career Seminar at Messmer High School. "e objective of the seminar was to encourage students to imagine what their futures might hold and take steps today to ensure those dreams become a reality.

"e event featured two keynote speakers and over 40 di!erent breakout session leaders representing a wide variety of occupations. Students were matched with session speakers based on their career interests. "e speakers represented a range of occupations, including physicians, nurses, attorneys, journalists, fashion designers, law enforcement

Messmer High School sophomores weren’t exactly thrilled to learn they needed to take a test. "e PLAN test, sometimes thought of as the “pre-ACT” helps students measure their current academic development. Due to its similar structure and format, the PLAN test is a strong predictor of success on the ACT, the most widely accepted college entrance exam. Taking the PLAN test encourages sophomores to begin the process of planning for post graduation, and the test results are useful tools in college and career exploration.

Try to tell that to sophomores. "e day before the test, they still weren’t very excited about taking another test. "at’s when Messmer High School senior Tim

Johnson stepped in. Tim knew how important the test was and wanted to help. He wrote lyrics and performed a rap for the sophomores at an assembly in order to get them excited for the test.

It worked! Tim got a standing ovation, and the entire student body and sta! recognized the sophomores with cheers of encouragement and applause.

o&cers, #nancial advisors, athletic trainers, engineers, and many more. "e presenters discussed the knowledge, skills and education their respective occupations require for success.

"is opportunity was coordinated by volunteer Bob Monday and made possible through the generosity of the Helen Bader Foundation.

"ree years ago, the Mary Monday Memorial Fund was started for the purpose of positively a!ecting Messmer youth. Mary was passionate about giving students a solid foundation in reading habits and skills; this begins with having the right materials and parental support.

Since its inception, the Mary Monday Fund has been able to provide students with books at Christmas, parenting materials for the Mary Monday Enrichment Room, a Family Fun Night to teach and model family values, and classroom libraries providing age- appropriate reading materials aligned

"anks to a very generous grant from the Lakeview Foundation, we were able to make much needed renovations to the cafeteria at St. Rose and St. Leo. "e new Lakeview Foundation Nutrition Center provides students with natural light, new tables and chairs, an expanded kitchen and updated kitchen equipment.

"ese upgrades have provided our students with a beautiful new facility in which to enjoy a nutritious breakfast and lunch.

We extend our appreciation and thanks to the Lakeview Foundation for their generosity.

with the Accelerated Reader program. Messmer Prep students have dramatically increased their independent reading through this program.

Future plans for the Mary Monday Memorial Fund include providing opportunities to increase literacy. "e Fund will also support parental involvement by providing educational family activities such as zoo passes, museum passes and books for homes.

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin employees collected Christmas gi$s for families struggling to make ends meet this year. "rough their generosity, multiple Messmer families received gi$s to open on Christmas Day.

"e AT&T Pioneer Network donated dictionaries to the entire third grade class at St. Rose and St. Leo and Messmer Preparatory Catholic School. "eir generosity supports literacy initiatives at Messmer Catholic Schools.

Students, faculty and sta! at Messmer High School, Messmer Preparatory Catholic School and St. Rose and St. Leo joined together this holiday season to collect non-perishable food items for the House of Peace. "e House of Peace provides meals to our community’s homeless, working poor and unemployed.

"e combined Messmer family surpassed its goal and completed food boxes for 157 families. We also collected

over $1,500 for the House of Peace and gave over 800 food items to the St. Martin de Porres Food Pantry. Students lined the hallways of Messmer to help pack the food collected to be boxed and delivered. In addition, hundreds of Chritmas cookies, brownies, fudge and other holiday goodies were created to share with the guests at the St. Ben’s Meal Program in December.

Messmer Catholic Schools’ students demonstrated their faith in action when they learned of the devastation in Haiti caused by the recent earthquake. Students from our grade schools and high school organized activities designed to raise money for those in need.

Students at the high school were challenged to fast from soda and snacks and instead donate the money they

otherwise would have spent on those extras to the relief e!ort. High school students and students from St. Rose and St. Leo also donated their spare change to the e!ort. Our students have gathered over $1,500 so far - and the e!orts still continue!

All money collected will be donated to the Haitian Project’s Louverture Cleary School, a Catholic coeducation boarding school in Croix de Bouquets, Haiti.

A Celebration of Poets. Two students from each class in grades

K4-8 are chosen to be the Messmer High Achievers at the end of each quarter. "ese students are selected by their teachers and must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher. In addition, these students must have demonstrated proper Social Skills taken from the Boy’s and Girl’s Town Discipline Model. "e selected High Achievers are rewarded with #eld trips.

"is past quarter, the High Achievers in grades 5-8 were taken to Buca’s Italian

Restaurant. "e students practiced proper dining etiquette, learned how to place a large order, and learned how to calculate an accurate tip based on #$een or twenty percent. "ese students were commended on their excellent social skills and represented Messmer well.

"e High Achievers in grades K4-4 were treated to a movie and popcorn. "ey were able to spend time with Principal Michelle Paris and build new relationships with other sta! members.

Messmer Catholic Schools salutes its leaders, contributors and supporters at our annual Portraits in Leadership Scholarship Dinner. Financial support from the event goes directly to funding important scholarship and #nancial aid programs for our students.

A member of the Messmer family received a long deserved honor as Carl Mickey #nally joined his fellow classmates as an “o&cial” graduate of Messmer High School and the Class of 1958.

Due to #nancial hardship, Carl was unable to join his classmates as they crossed the stage in 1958.

When Carl’s sister made Br. Bob Smith aware of the unusual situation, Messmer High School awarded Mr. Mickey his long awaited Messmer diploma. "e Annual Reunion Weekend provided the perfect opportunity for us to honor Messmer’s newest graduate.

I was Student Council President, on the Basketball team, and ran Cross Country and Track. I was also in the Recruitment Club.

Kay Wi%er, English teacher, cared about students and held our feet to the #re because she had faith and con#dence in us. Fr. Pulice was principal when I started and Sr. Miriam "erese was principal my last two years. Bob Straszewski, American Government teacher and Freshman Basketball coach, was very committed to the blue and white and a great in%uence early on. Mike Basile was the Varsity Basketball coach and a$er a loss to Dominican early in the year where we didn’t play well, he had the entire team practicing at 6 a.m. - even the injured!

"e threat of Messmer’s closure was personally devastating. I would graduate but I was worried about my siblings.

"e way it was handled at the end of the year was pretty bad when they pulled the plug early on a Friday a$ernoon. "e student body felt betrayed and it made us grow up quickly. When the Archdiocese treated us that way it emboldened the parents, alumni, friends and donors to continue to #ght. I personally was the student representative on the Save Messmer Committee and helped lead protests and marches. It was the #rst time I ever talked to the media.

I attended Marquette University and graduated in 1988 with a degree in Political Science. I then attended Marquette University Law School and graduated in 1991. A$erwards, I practiced privately from 1991 to 2003, when I was elected a Circuit Court Judge. I have served assignments in Children’s Court for four years and Criminal Domestic Violence Court for the last two years.

During the last year when Messmer might close, I would have been the last physical person to cross the stage. "at year, for some reason, they graduated by height. "ankfully Messmer reopened.

Messmer gives you the foundation you need, but you have to continue to work hard. Success will be long term. I like the current Hard Work + Discipline = Success motto on the Messmer banner. It speaks to alumni, parents and students.

Every school should be so lucky to have a Mrs. Rooney.

Someone who relates so well to students that they take to calling her “Mom.”

Someone who works for decades at the school - running the Bookstore, helping out in the cafeteria and o&ce - and then sticks around for many more years as a tireless volunteer.

Someone to hold precious the institutional memory of the place.

Messmer High School was home and family to Anita Rooney. She started in 1956. She was there when I graduated in 1972. And she was still around in 1995,

when the yearbook was dedicated to her.Mrs. Rooney died June 6, 2009 at St.

Anne’s Salvatorian Campus near 92nd and Lisbon, where she spent the past eight years. She was 90 years old.

“She was a mothering #gure,” said Messmer Principal Je! Monday, who’s been at the school 21 years. “She told you the way things were. If she saw a student not eating his or her vegetables, she would let her opinion be known.”

As a shy teenager, I was a bit intimidated by her at #rst, rather like some of the nuns. She was brassy and direct and could see right through wise guys, class-skippers and line-jumpers.

But over time, you recognized this chemistry she had with kids. Students would seek her out not just to buy school supplies, but to ask her advice or get a hug.

Mrs. Rooney was not a teacher, at least not o&cially. No one job title could capture her value to the school.

“Her real passion was not on the administrative side. It was the direct interaction with the students,” Monday said.

Every year at graduation, an honor is given to a parent or guardian who really helped Messmer thrive. It’s called the Anita Rooney Impact Award.

Her name lives on, along with the school she treasured.
