When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for publicofficers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you tochoose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God. Thepreservation of a republican government depends on the faithfuldischarge of this duty. If the citizens neglect their duty and placeunprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; lawswill be made not for the public good so much as for selfish or localpurposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute thelaws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and therights of the citizens will be violated or disregarded. If a republicangovernment fails to secure public properity and happiness, it must bebecause the citizens neglect the Divine commands and elect bad men tomake and administer the laws.
Noah Wester
The Moral or Natural Law was given by the Sovereign of the universe toall mankind; with them it was coeval [existing at the same time as man]and with them it will be coexistent [lasting as long as man lasts]. Beingfounded by infinite wisdom and goodness on essential right, which nevervaries, it can require no amendment or alteration.

Man, considered as a creature, must necessarily be subject to the lawsof his Creator, for he is entirely a dependent being. . . . Andconsequently, as man depends absolutely upon his Maker for everything,it is necessary that he should in all points conform to his Maker's will. This will of his Maker is called the law of nature. . . . This law of nature, being coeval [coexistent] with mankind and dictated by God Himself, isof course superior in obligation to any other. It is binding over all theglobe, in all countries, and at all times; no human laws are of anyvalidity if contrary to this. . . . The doctrines thus delivered we call therevealed of Divine law and they are to be found only in the HolyScriptures. . . . Upon these two foundations, the law of nature and thelaw of revelation, depend all human laws; that is to say, no human lawsshould be suffered to contradict these.
