Vettel takes pole with fastest-ever lap at BIC(Continued from Page 1)

With Hamilton hampered by that five-place grid penalty,

he and Mercedes opted to run the softs in Q2, giving him an alternative strategy as he will start the race on that tyre.Hamilton eased into the final part of qualifying, looking more comfortable on the slower soft tyre to go second. Everyone else was on the supersofts, with Vettel pumping in a brilliant lap to go quickest. Raikkonen ended up third fastest, with Ricciardo fourth and Bottas fifth with Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg best of the rest in the sixth, 0.846s off the pace. But perhaps the star of the session was Pierre Gasly, who put the

Honda-powered Toro Rosso into Q3 for the first time this year in ninth. Teammate Brendon Hartley, who damaged his front wing when he hit a bird early in the session, just missed out in 11th.Force India’s Sergio Perez was also eliminated, along with Alonso, McLaren team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne and Verstappen, who took no part in the second segment of qualifying following his crash. Raikkonen was top of the charts after the first runs, but his teammate Vettel in second had more time in hand after running very wide at the final turn. Hamilton slotted into third, just a tenth off the pace, ahead of Bottas and Ricciardo

with Gasly and Carlos Sainz in the Renault the only other drivers to set a banker lap, albeit on used supersoft tyres.Vettel made no mistake on his second run, clocking the fastest first sector and personal bests in the next two to take pole. Raikkonen could not respond and will line up second. Bottas popped into third, ahead of Hamilton, who will start Sunday’s race ninth and has never won a race from outside the top six.Ricciardo was fifth quickest, two-tenths further back. Gasly was a sensational sixth, with Kevin Magnussen seventh for Haas. Hulkenberg, Force India’s Esteban Ocon and Sainz completed the top 10.

Director of Protocol at the Interior Ministry, Lt-Col

Hamad Al Hajri yesterday asserted that all precautionary security measures were taken for the race.

Security steps, Al Hajri said, weren’t limited to the Bahrain International Circuit, but also include the deployment of police and traffic patrols on main roads leading the circuit.

The move follows the directives of Interior Minister and the follow-up of the Chief of Public Security to take the necessary steps to contribute to the success of the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix (Formula One).

He also called upon the public to cooperate with the police and avoid bringing banned items to the circuit.

Meanwhile, the Head of

Investigation at the General Directorate of Southern Governorate Police, Captain Ibrahim Al Kaabi highlighted the security plans for the event that were finalised after various meetings.

He called upon the public to come to the event early, park their car in the appropriate parking lots and cooperate with the police for the success of the race.

Sheikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa

By Invitation

In this day and age we encounter multiple forms of information feeders, quick images and

capsules of messages and news fed to us constantly through so many channels. There is a global line of communication, which became our common and familiar mode of reception. We all have developed our favorite tool to access or gather knowledge and information. Our relationship with books and newspapers has changed. Almost everything is affected by screens and the digital media. Instead of carrying a physical book, we can read on the Kindle. This shift is affecting how we consume news and gain knowledge.

I consider myself old-fashioned, in the sense that my relationship with pen and paper and filling a page of a notebook with words is still strong and gives me great pleasure. I cannot write anything without feeling the marking of each letter on a page, understanding the flow of letters that quickly fill up the lines in a notebook.

We often hear about publications that chose to become paperless, and chose to be presented in a

digital format only. Having said this, there is still a conscious platform bringing publishers and books from international cities to share and exchange and exhibit. On March 28, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities celebrated the opening of the 18th edition of the International Book Fair in the heart of Muharraq, at Arad Fort.

The event that concluded yesterday was a platform that allowed us to interact and celebrate authors, publications, and the knowledge that is offered in a dynamic and vibrant setting. An extensive cultural agenda was put together to parallel the book fair. Talks, poetry readings, seminars, book signing sessions, kids programs and music became part of this international event. It was a well-rounded experience for all audiences.

There was an exciting vibe surrounding this book fair, a vibe that celebrated knowledge and creative exchange. It was an occasion to celebrate the most rooted and classical form of knowledge transfer. We can all raise awareness and promote the importance of supporting authors and publishers.

Parliamentarians will vote on two proposals seeking to

prohibit annual fee increments

in private educational institution in the Kingdom in their next weekly session on Tuesday.

The bills, if approved,

will allow fee increases in private education institution only once in every three years.

Besides, the bills also seek to limit the percentage of fee hike to a maximum of 5 per cent, according to the MPs who tabled the bills.

The move follows a public uproar against a decision by the Education Ministry allowing a 5pc fee hike in private educational institutions with a “good” or “excellent” rating as an “encouragement incentive to their high performance”.

The decision drew parents, social activists and parliamentarians ire as several  schools were quick to seize the opportunity by announcing fee increase within few hours after the decision was revealed.

In light of the developments, the

proposals were referred urgently to the Council’s Services Committee for review in the regular weekly meeting on Tuesday.

Committee members discussed the matter with representatives of Education Ministry in several meetings during the past three months. The ministry insisted that it’s closely monitoring the fee increment procedures. Labour and Social Development Ministry also issued a similar response.

It’s noteworthy that His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued directives on  January 28  this year forbidding any increment in  private  educational establishments’ fees.

Few hours after the announcement of the Royal directives, several private schools informed parents that they are withdrawing their decision to increase school fees.

How often do you express your views in a suggestion box or hit a smiley face (Emoji) button on Bahrain airport

to voice your feedback on the quality of service?. Do we care about feedback on the service offered public sector? When is the last time you have noticed the sign that reads “We want to hear from you”; “Your feedback is important to us”?

The objectives of user-driven innovation are to create new markets and stimulate demand. Innovation contests play a vital role to capture open innovation from a wide crowd. Historically, in 1869, Napoleon III offered a prize to anyone who could make a substitute for butter. To harness the talents of crowds, a number of innovation contests emerged including the Computer Chess game to beat the chess champion Kasparov and Innocentive innovation contest.

Innovation with users is a key feature of sustainable firms that are keen to add-value and access new markets. For example, 3M is a model for an innovative technology-driven company that made innovative breakthroughs. This was achieved through devoting 15% of the time of staff on joint teams from technical and marketing departments. Innovation driven by insight from users and customers helps firms and public sector to devise sound products that meets users’ needs. The pioneering work of MIT professor Eric von Hippel, Democratizing Innovation, shed light on the role of lead users in in innovation and in identifying unarticulated needs. His research showed that in more than 1000 innovations across 9 industries, 60% on innovations were users-led.

In a digital and networked world, open source design software offers immense opportunities to innovative ideas beyond imagination. Global firms like P&D, Nestle, 3M, Microsoft and Motorola work with users to generate ideas, test prototypes, give feedback, and innovate new products and services. The rationale is simple, since firms cannot hire the best talents, they can utilize open and user innovation.

Globally, examples of user-driven innovations are many and diverse like the ABS braking, Boeing process machine, design of circuit boards, Sony video game for Play Station. Also, many devices in sport and medicine were prototyped and invented by users like the medical imaging device. User exploration is a commonly used method along with voice of the customer and empathy maps which offer new insights for the perceptions of customers’ “pains and gains”.

Moreover, the role of living labs to address urban design and provide solutions to urban issues are crucial to develop smart and livable cities in GCC. In Nordic countries like Finland and Denmark, user-driven innovation is gaining ground and contributing to better quality service and growth in the public sector. This paradigm of public-private sector collaboration helps define a new social contract and enhance social cohesion.

In sum, experience-driven innovation affect company, brand and product since human experience are evoked by nice experiences like the smell of expresso or Turkish coffee in the morning.

The F1 fever isn’t complete without enthusiastic fans

getting a one-on-one ‘meet and greet’ session with their favourite race car drivers.   One of the major highlights from the second day at the Bahrain Grand Prix 2018 was the Autograph Session that took place early in the afternoon yesterday. Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas of World champions Mercedes, interacted with fans at the Mercedes stand at BIC’s Formula 1 Village vending area.

Race goers had started to line-up hours earlier than the allocated time so to ensure they don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

While the weather was cloudy and pleasant during the early hours of the morning, the scorching heat had taken over as  noon  settled, but it did not deter F1 enthusiasts from getting an autograph and a memorable ‘selfie’ with their idols. Speaking to DT News, brother and sister duo ‘Joe Hattan and Rosy Hattan’ were excited and a little nervous as they met and successfully got their autographs, flown in all the

way from UK. “We are major Lewis Hamilton fans and this trip is a birthday treat for my brother that I know he will remember for years,” Rosy said.

While there were many outside visitors, locals were also lined-up in anticipation to get an up-close experience of meeting their

favourite race car drivers. Hakeem stood for almost 80 minutes to ensure he and his children meet Bottas. “It is amazing how Bahrain has embraced such a major sport, hence it is our duty to pass the interest and excitement on to our children.” While many were able to get their shirts and

pictures autographed, to the disappointment of others(who had joined the queue a little later), the drivers had to leave the session after almost 45 minutes. There is a ‘Driver’s Autograph Session’ expected to take place today (Sunday) at 2pm.

Getting your pictures taken in a traditional way is old

routine. Things have certainly escalated to adapting the technological era; this includes bidding adieu to 2-dimensional clicks and welcoming a 3D mechanism of picture taking.

At the F1 Village Vending Area, a small booth is demonstrating the dynamics of 3D printing and how it will welcome a new era of preserving memories and providing so much more. Visitors for the past two days have been getting their 3D miniature models printed as souvenirs for attending the Bahrain Grand Prix 2018.

The Founder and CEO of Aim 3D, ‘Dr. Dirar Khoury’ spoke to DT News on why this might be the biggest breakthrough which, while still in its infancy stage in the Middle East and specifically Bahrain, might help in changing the way three major industries work- medicine, fashion and fitness. Having a background in biomedical engineering, Dr.Dirar    was interested in 3D modelling and engineering for the last 25 years and more recently, with the evolution of 3D printing technology and its promise to be the fourth industrial revolution, he wanted to introduce it into the Middle East to showcase its innumerable benefits.

“It’s popular in North America and Europe but in the Middle East, it is still very new so I wanted to help in the education and awareness of the benefits of this technology. Though there are several

resellers of 3D printers here, you need to make potential clients and customers more aware of how they can use it.”

Breakthrough in health, fashion and fitnessThe printers while serving as your souvenirs can also serve with major purposes like providing 3D models to doctors for pre-surgical planning. “We take the MRI and CT scan and construct 3D models of the bones, the shoulders or the neck and basically print this 3D model, allowing doctors to practice before going into the actual surgery process.”

He pointed out that the material used for these specific models is gypsum paste but other kinds of material can also be made use of. While stating the technology isn’t being utilized in the hospitals in Bahrain yet, it won’t be long before they become a significant practice.

Aside from medicines, Dr.Dirar talked how it is the most useful tool that can be implemented in the fashion industry. “We recently conducted a fashion workshop to showcase the definite ways we can make use of this. You can now take a scanned 3D

image and send it off to India or England and they will customize a dress according to your body size, allowing custom tailoring on a global scale,” he pointed.

Even a major attributor for monitoring your weight loss, the technology allows you to monitor your body dimensions every week to analyze your fitness and weight loss. “With 125 cameras, that take a picture all at once, the benefits are far more than actually comprehended right now. But this is the future and it is happening now”, he concluded.

Among the many exciting roaming acts at the

Bahrain Grand Prix, this year is an intriguing set of robots who are literally roaming around with it being hard to actually point out which one is real.

The act ‘Space Ci Man’ is spearheaded by artist ‘Martin Forget’, a French-Canadian who has been performing with his robot set for two years but it took him more than that to actually create every single mask in absolute precision to his own face dimensions and expression.

In a conversation with DT News, he informed how with the help of another artist and designer friend, he made 5 masks using silicone. “Silicon masks are extremely high-quality wearable masks made from state-of-the-art silicone and designed to conform to your own face,” he said.

Unlike foam latex or slip

latex masks, the masks look and behave like real flesh and muscle. “Each mask is hand-crafted individually with a meticulous eye for detail. The sculpting and colouring are created to add ultra-high realism to each handcrafted mask and it took me more than an hour in the chair every day for two years to create five of these masks with my exact expression.”

The whole suit with aluminium legs and hands weighs 20kilos; however, Martin is used to carrying it around and loves to perform in front of an interested audience. “So far people in Bahrain have been very curious and take selfies and get intrigued to touch the masks, even touching my own face in the process!”

The Space Ci Man act will continue today at the F1 Village Vending Area till  6 pm.

Aramco eyes new petchem plant in Texas

Houston

Saudi Arabia’s national oil company Saudi Aramco

is expected to disclose initial steps toward a multibillion-dollar chemical plant in Texas, according to sources familiar with the company’s U.S. operations. Saudi Aramco has been weighing an expansion of its U.S. subsidiary Motiva Enterprises LLC’s Port Arthur, Texas refinery, already the largest in the United States by capacity.

But Motiva wants to first

move into petrochemicals, using abundant natural gas from U.S. shale fields to make the precursors for plastics, the sources said.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to attend an event in Houston where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih and Saudi Aramco Chief Executive Amin Nasser are to discuss the plans, according to a Saudi Aramco representative.

“Motiva is actively exploring a number of opportunities as

part of its growth strategy,” the company said on Friday. “These opportunities include locations where we currently operate as well as new ones.”

Saudi Aramco last year said it would invest $18 billion in Motiva’s Port Arthur refinery, which can process up to 603,000 barrels of crude oil per day (bpd).

Motiva wants to add an ethane cracker near its refinery that could produce more than 1.5 million tons of ethylene a year, the sources said. (Reuters)

‘Gladiator’ armor sells for $96,000 at auction

Canberra

The torso armor Russell Crowe wore for his

Oscar-winning role in “Gladiator” eclipsed expectations at a Sydney auction on Saturday, selling for 125,000 Australian dollars ($96,000).

Sotheby’s Australia had estimated the stunt cuirass worn in the 2000 blockbuster would fetch between AU$20,000 and AU$30,000. But much of the movie memorabilia auctioned by the Australia-based New Zealander as part of his divorce

settlement exceeded expectations.

A replica Roman chariot from the same movie in which Crowe played the general-turned-gladiator Maximus, thought to be worth up to AU$10,000, was sold for AU$65,000.

A leather boxer’s protector, worn by Crowe when he played heavyweight champion James J. Braddock in the 2005 movie “Cinderella Man,” estimated to bring between AU$500 and AU$600, sold for AU$7,000 after intense bidding. (AP) One of the costumes from the film Gladiator

India’s central bank barred banks yesterday from

having any links to virtual currency dealers, slashing the prices of bitcoin and other crypto-currencies on local exchanges.

Pakistan’s central bank said in a separate statement late yesterday that crypto-currencies were not legal in the country.

The State Bank of Pakistan told banks and other financial services providers to refuse customers seeking crypto-currency transactions.

It noted that those using crypto-currencies to transfer funds outside Pakistan could be prosecuted.

India’s government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have previously cautioned the public over crypto-currencies,

with New Delhi vowing earlier this year to eliminate the use of digital currency, which it considers illegal.

The RBI said on Thursday that entities under its regulation may not deal in any virtual currency.

The price of bitcoin plummeted to a low of 350,000 rupees ($5,392) versus its international market price of $6,617, following the RBI announcement, crypto-currency exchange Coinome said.

Bitcoin was trading before the announcement at a 5 percent premium to the overseas price, said Vishal Gupta, co-founder of the Block Chain and Cryptocurrency Committee, an industry body, noting it is now trading at a significant discount.

“This seems to be a very aggressive move,” said technology law expert Namita Viswanath, a principal associate at IndusLaw.

“Instead of the RBI taking a holistic approach and seeing how to curb potential misuse, it seems to be a rather broad-stroke approach of completely prohibiting this altogether.”

Late on Friday the RBI issued a more detailed circular stating any regulated entities that already provide virtual currency dealing services will have to cut all ties within three months.

The Indian government has previously likened crypto-currency investments to “Ponzi schemes” that offer unusually high returns to early investors.

It has set up a panel to investigate crypto-currencies

and plans to appoint a regulator to oversee unregulated exchanges.

Thursday’s announcement raised concerns about the exit options for investors who currently hold crypto-currencies.

The Block Chain and Cryptocurrency Committee’s Gupta estimated that at least 4 to 5 million people in India hold some kind of crypto-currency and that 60 percent of them entered the market between October and December, when prices were at a peak.

“Most of these people are already sitting on capital losses,” he said. “Now the asset has become dead. You can’t transact with it. If you transact with it, your bank accounts are going to be shut.” (Reuters)

India is seeking to buy around 110 fighter jets, the air force said in a request for

information issued yesterday, marking the first step toward a long-delayed deal that could be worth more than $15 billion.

Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Saab and Dassault Aviation are among the manufacturers expected to compete.

The aircraft must be built largely in India as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s drive to build a domestic industrial base.

The air force said in a notice that “85 percent will have to be made in India by a Strategic Partner/Indian Production Agency”.

Lockheed has offered to move its F-16 production line in Fort Worth,

Texas, to India and make it the only plant worldwide to produce the F-16 for not only India but also other countries, said Vivek Lall, vice president, strategy and business development at Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed has teamed with India’s Tata Advanced Systems to build the planes locally while Sweden’s Saab has entered into a partnership with the Adani Group, a resources conglomerate. The other contenders have not announced their local partners.

The tender will be open for makers of both single engine and twin-engined combat jets, in a widening of the field. The Eurofighter Typhoon and Russian aircraft are also potential contenders under the new requirements.

The exhibition will run from Sunday 8th April to 22nd April at Albareh Art Gallery. Time: Saturday-Thursday, 10am-2pm and 4pm-8pm

Today you might feel the urge to write. This could involve nothing more than a lengthy letter or email to a friend, but it could also be creative work, such as a novel, essay, screenplay, or poem. Whatever it is, you’re likely to express some intellectual, philosophical, or spiritual concerns that you hope to shed some light on.

Paperwork involving money needs to be executed today. It could be a settlement, new commission, or bonus of some kind. This is likely to be a joyous occasion because money is coming your way, even though the paperwork itself might be a drag. Try to concentrate and get it done quickly so you and those close to you can go out and celebrate.

Today your mind should be especially quick and penetrating. You could decide to tackle some in-depth research that you’ve been considering doing for a while on a subject that fascinates you. You might also want to discuss the subject with someone close to you who shares this interest. Don’t be surprised if you come up with some intriguing insights. Write everything down.

Some vivid, beautiful dreams or visions could awaken you and make you aware of new opportunities. They could be creative in nature, and you should consider taking advantage of them. This revelation could have been there, unnoticed, for a long time. Don’t write it off because of the unorthodox way it appeared.

Today you might decide to attend a group activity that is primarily concerned with an intellectual, philosophical, or spiritual interest of yours. You might meet a charismatic person whose conversation stimulates your mind and causes you to come up with new insights.

A public figure, perhaps an author, might capture your interest in some way today. This person could have a lot to say that appeals to you on a number of different levels. You’ll want to acquaint yourself with as much of this person’s work as possible. You could experience some valuable personal insights. Don’t worry if your practical mind chides you for this obsession.

Today you might attend a party or group activity that puts you in touch with some interesting people from faraway places. You could find their conversation intellectually stimulating. You’re apt to learn a lot from them. Books could be involved in some way. You’ll want to stay in touch with them, so be sure to get names, phone numbers or email addresses. This could open up some new doors for you.

Some big upheaval in your career could take you by surprise, but it’s apt to make a very positive difference to you. Your public standing and income could both skyrocket. Legal papers might be involved in some way. This could happen so suddenly that it has you in a daze, but try to remain focused and go with the flow. You won’t want this opportunity to pass you by.

Today you and the other members of your household might discuss the possibility of making some changes. This could involve some redecorating or remodelling or even something as mundane as a thorough cleaning. However, it could also involve the possibility of moving to a completely different place. The need for change in your surroundings is apparent, so don’t hesitate.

A social event could bring you into contact with a very intense, fascinating person in an intriguing profession. You could find him or her very charming. If you aren’t romantically involved at the moment, there could be potential here! If nothing else, this person might steer you in a new intellectual or spiritual direction.

You always tend to have good powers of concentration, but today you’re more focused than usual, probably on a project that means a lot to you. This could be job related, it might involve helping a friend, or it may just be a personal project. Whatever it is, you should accomplish a lot today. The downside is that you might forget to eat, sleep, or take any breaks. Take care!An intense conversation with your romantic partner could take place today. This could involve taking the relationship to the next commitment level, and the subject of marriage could come up. If you’re already married, this could mean taking on a new responsibility, such as a house or child. If you aren’t currently involved, expect to meet someone new and exciting.

A tanker crashed into a historic mansion

on the shores of Istanbul’s Bosphorus yesterday after its steering equipment became locked, broadcaster CNN Turk said, adding that traffic in the strait had been suspended in both directions.

Towboats and coast guard vessels were sent to the area after the crash and the “Vitaspirit” tanker, carrying a Maltese flag, was pulled back from the crash site and brought to shore, CNN Turk said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but footage from the crash showed extensive damage to the historic seaside mansion located under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge, one of the three crossings between Istanbul’s Asian and European sides.

The Hekimbasi Salih Efendi Mansion has stood on the shores of the Bosphorus Strait since the 18th century and is used to host weddings and concerts, according to the mansion’s website. (Reuters)

Muenster, Germany

A man smashed a vehicle into busy cafe and

restaurant terraces in Germany Saturday killing at least three people before shooting himself dead in front of horrified diners.

Images of the scene showed broken and upturned tables and chairs strewn across the pavement outside eateries in the centre of the picturesque medieval city of Muenster as media reports said the driver was a German national in his late 40s with a history of mental health problems and no known links to “terrorism”.

Public broadcaster ZDF said the man had recently attempted suicide.

Police in the northwestern

university city did not immediately confirm the reports.

At least 20 people were injured, six of them seriously.

“There was a bang and then screaming. The police arrived and got everyone out of here,” an employee of one the cafes hardest hit by the rampage told rolling news channels N24 and NTV.

“There were a lot of people screaming. I’m angry -- it’s cowardly to do something like this.”

Armed police were deployed and officers urged residents to avoid the city centre to allow investigators to get to work amid initial fears the country had suffered another extremist assault. (AFP)

Hockey-mad Canada was in mourning yesterday

after a bus carrying a junior ice hockey team collided with a semi-trailer truck in Saskatchewan province, killing 14 people.

In a country where love of the sport is almost a religion, the crash sparked an outpouring of grief among players and fans on social media, while national political leaders expressed their sympathies.

“We can now confirm 14 people have died as a result of this collision,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement, which did not say how many of the victims were players or coaches of the Humboldt Broncos team.

Of the total 29 people on the team bus, including the driver, 15 were taken to hospital with injuries.

“Three of these people have injuries that are critical in nature,” the RCMP said.

They gave no information about status of truck driver.

The team comprises 24 players, all from Canada, with the youngest aged 16 and the oldest 21.

The crash took place at around 5:00 pm (2300 GMT) Friday on Highway 35 about 28 kilometres (18 miles) north of the town of Tisdale, a trading centre in an overwhelmingly agricultural region of the western province.

The team was heading north for a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League

playoff game against the Nipawin Hawks.

Police gave no indication of the cause, but early yesterday special police investigators were still at the scene, which is roughly 150 kilometres east of Prince Albert City.

The flat prairie around the crash site is covered with snow, traces of which can be seen on the ploughed roads.

Canadian media said the collision occurred near the junction with another highway.

The Saskatchewan league is a feeder system for higher levels of hockey, with many graduating to play at US and Canadian colleges and major junior league level, while some go on to the National Hockey League. (AFP)

A European satellite launched this week to try out ways of tackling the

growing amount of garbage in space will use technology as familiar to the ancient Romans as astronauts - nets and harpoons.

Engineers who have designed and created harpoons for two pioneering space debris clearing projects said the appeal of such time-tested concepts was their simplicity.

“The irony is not lost on us,” said Alastair Wayman, an advanced projects engineer at Airbus Space in the southern English town of Stevenage.

“This is a really nice, simple piece of technology but what we’ve done is we’ve updated it for use in space and the beauty of this system is in its simplicity,” he told Reuters. (Reuters)

Representatives of 10 countries out of 13 that are under the umbrella of the ABF were present at the meeting – Bahrain, Sudan, Jordan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Morocco and Lebanon, while Iraq, Tunisia and Mauritania were unable to attend.

Supreme Council for Youth and Sports assistant general secretary and BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar and Union of Arab National Olympic Committees general secretary Saud Abdulaziz were also present.

The Bahrain Badminton federation was represented by Sawsan Taqawi and general secretary Hisham Al Abbasi.

After Taqawi was declared the next term president, she made a presentation on her plan to develop badminton in the Arab region.

Max Verstappen has blamed a 150-horsepower surge from his

Renault engine for triggering the Q1 crash that put him out of Formula 1 qualifying at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver put in a time good enough to get him through to Q2, and was completing a second high-speed lap to help sort out some engine settings.

But as he ran across the kerbs at

Turn 2, the back end of his RB14 stepped out and he spun across the track - hitting the barriers on the outside of the circuit.

Having studied the telemetry data on his return to the garage, Verstappen uncovered a bizarre unexpected boost of power caused him to lose control.

“It was unfortunate,” said Verstappen, who will start 15th. “I studied the data a bit and saw we had

a 150hp increase, which is a bit odd.“The corner isn’t flat out, but it

was like an on and off switch. It spun up the rear tyres quite aggressively and then I spun.

“I didn’t anticipate it at all. With 150hp extra, suddenly it went and when you are already on the limit it is quite a lot.”

Verstappen’s crash in qualifying in Bahrain has come just two weeks after the Dutchman also spun in

the Australian Grand Prix, but team boss Christian Horner has denied suggestions the youngster is pushing too hard.

“It is just racing,” Horner told Sky Sports. “That lap was never going to be a quicker lap, it was purely about giving the engine the opportunity to learn the optimum settings.

“It was a mistake but he will have the chance to bounce back from it.” (Autosport)

McLaren’s Eric Boullier says a “big

investigation” is needed into its ‘astonishing’ lack of pace in qualifying for Formula 1’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

Boullier said the lack of pace was confusing considering the drivers “don’t report anything wrong” with the car

“Obviously it’s a bit of a surprise, based on the pace we had in FP3,” Boullier told Sky Sports F1 immediately after Q2. “There is a need for a big investigation.

“On his last lap Fernando found some pace in sector two and sector three, which would have helped earlier. We need

to find out what’s going on.“The balance is fine,

obviously there’s a lack of grip, that’s my conclusion for the poor performance, but they don’t report anything wrong.”

McLaren scored a double points finish in the Melbourne season-opener, and Alonso had started from a top-10 position, which suggests McLaren has lost relative pace in Bahrain, despite bringing further updates to the car that were missing for Australia.

“We were struggling last year in Bahrain as well, which is something we need to investigate for this layout,” Boullier added. (Autosport)

Al Saud qualifies for final round

DT News NetworkManama

Saudi Arabian driver Mohammed Al Saud showed

fight and determination in qualifying the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East championship, getting quicker with each lap.

The young driver, who will be aiming to close the gap on bronze category leader Mark Radcliffe, kept his hopes alive qualifying just two places behind Radcliffe for the first race and one place behind him for the second.

Speaking after q u a l i f y i n g , Al Saud said:

“The whole atmosphere around Bahrain International Circuit is completely different to what I’ve experienced before, it’s my first time racing as part of a Formula 1 weekend and you can really feel the excitement both on the track and around the garages.

“My times today weren’t the quickest I’ve recorded this season but the track was quite difficult to drive, and took a while for the tyres to kick in. It’s a different format only having the one session to qualify for both races but I’m happy with the positions I’ve secured and will leave the rest up to what happens in the

race. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The session wasn’t easy; Porsche China Junior Daniel Lu lost his engine in the chicane leaving oil on the track during the final lap for most drivers. South African Saul Hack spun out as a result and drivers headed back to the pits with cautious moves. The fastest lap by each driver in the session decided Saturday’s Race 1 grid and their second fastest lap clocked for Sunday’s Race 2 grid.

With qualifying results showing just how close the competition is across all three categories, fans of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, Formula 1 and global

motorsport will witness drivers battle it out in what is set

to be a speculative s e a s o n

showdown.

Al Zubair jumped on to the F1 podium, holding his trophy high

over his head to a round of cheers from global motorsport fans at the circuit. He becomes one of four Arab drivers to win the championship, joining Kuwait’s Zaid Ashkanani, Saudi Arabia’s Abdulaziz Al Faisal, and Bahrain’s Salman Bin Rashid Al Khalifa as local talent that the series has already helped develop since its inception in 2009.

Commenting on the race, Al Zubair said: “Honestly, I feel amazing. My start wasn’t the best

and I allowed Glynn Geddie to get very close to me in the opening corner. I managed to pull more of a lead after the following three turns - my aim was to get as far out in front as possible and to not make any mistakes. Unfortunately, the safety car was deployed at that point, but I had a good re-start and pushed hard to re-gain the lead I had. We had the pace today and I crossed the line comfortably in first place.

It was a great day for the future of motorsport, as the podium was dominated by teenagers. 19-year-old Bahraini Isa A. Al Khalifa

gave a season’s best performance in front of his home crowd finish second. Behind him in third finished Porsche Junior China driver Daniel Lu. In only this third race in the championship and at just sixteen-years-old, he gave Porsche fans a glimpse of what is to come.

Behind Lu, drivers were locked in a six-car battle throughout the race, which impressed the F1 crowd in Bahrain. Isa S. Al Khalifa maintained his cool to finish fourth, ahead of Scotsman Glynn Geddie and Dutchman Charlie Frijns in sixth.

Four-times world champion Lewis Hamilton has been dealt

with a huge setback as the racer has been handed a five place grid penalty for today’s race.

Hamilton will need to start the race today with a five place grid penalty because of breach of rules. The breach related to rules over gearbox changes, the Mercedes driver needed a new gearbox. His car suffered a hydraulics leak during season opener in Australia and had to follow an unscheduled gearbox change.

According to F1 rules, gear boxes must last for six consecutive races, which Hamilton was not

able to abide by.Confirming the news Mercedes

tweeted, “Lewis Hamilton will take a five-place grid penalty for the BahrainGP after having to change his gearbox.”

Explaining further it said in a following tweet “We had a hydraulic leak during the Australia GP and were fortunate to finish the race. Unfortunately the Team couldn’t repair the gearbox within the six race cycle so need to take a fresh one, incurring the grid penalty.”

In last year’s Bahrain GP Hamilton endured a similar fate after being handed a 5 second penalty after he was deemed to have impeded Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.

A faultless race saw 19-year-old Omani sensation Al Faisal Al

Zubair wins Race 1 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East Round 5 in style. Taking maximum points in Round 6, which acts as the official support race to the 2018 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, Al Zubair added his name to the history books as the winner of Season 9.

Team Bahrain also had cause for celebration, as they took home the Team Category prize. As their first team win of the season, it seemed fitting for it happen at their home track - Bahrain International Circuit.

The results for Bahrain didn’t just end there, 19-year-old Bahraini Isa A. Al Khalifa gave a season’s best performance in front of his home crowd, battling his way from fourth on the grid to finish on the overall podium in second. Team mate Isa S. Al Khalifa found himself in six-car battle for fourth throughout

the race, but kept his composure to finish in fourth.

Speaking after his second-place podium, Isa A. Al Khalifa said: “It was an amazing race today. I started from fourth place on the grid, giving myself a good chance of staying close to the front runners early on. Charlie Frijns was in front of me

and he didn’t have a great start, so I knew it was my opportunity to gain a position before the first turn. I went for it and it paid off. I pulled a small gap, the car felt good and I was comfortable throughout.

“On lap seven I notice that Geddie was struggling with the car, and was able to pass him late on to

take a second-place finish overall. It’s an incredible result for me and for Team Bahrain, and to finish so strongly on my home circuit in front of my friends and family was an unbelievable experience. I cannot wait until tomorrow’s final race.”

Fellow team mate Isa S. Al

Khalifa added: “It’s been such a good day for Team Bahrain, both myself and Isa Abdullah drove really well, and not only gained some vital points for the category title, but showed our home fans how much we’ve developed since driving in the same race last season. It feels great to take home silverware in the first race, and I’m hoping that tomorrow I can continue to close the gap on both Magnus Oehman and Khalid Al Wahaibi in the Silver Category and, who knows, the title may still be in sight after all!”

Starting on pole, Al Zubair was pressurised at the first turn by Scotsman Glynn Geddie, but fought for his position and took the lead. The safety car was deployed in lap one, due to Christoffer Bergström spinning out into the barrier, and prevented the Omani from creating a gap. That didn’t trouble Al Zubair though, who powered away at the restart to produce a five second lead and drive flawlessly until the chequered flag. (Continued on page 23)
