Dear friend, are you not impressed by the fact that Jesus spent thirty three years of His life on earth minis- tering to the living, but spent only three days min- istering and liberating the souls of the dead? On the con- trary, it always causes a dread among people, as it contains the prod- ucts of death. And yet, such was the Tomb of Christ, but from that tomb He rose from the dead, because He defeated death. “Christ having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him” (Rom. 6,9). He was filled with unspoken joy, so the first word that came out of His blessed mouth was “Rejoice”! (Matt. 28,9). His body was full of glory and grace and shining like a million suns, and this shall be the ulti- mate blessedness of the soul and body of every devout per- son – “…. The righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matt.13, 43). Like Christ himself, we also will be raised from the dead. First our soul and then our bodies.     A s Christians we are taught that we should be loyal to God. However, how difficult is loyalty, es-pecially in difficult times? The noble Jo-seph of the Old Tes-tament shows us that even when life is at its toughest, our loy-alty to God will never be in vain. You can read a more detailed story of his life in the book of Genesis, chapters 37-50. Joseph was the second youngest and favourite of Jacob’s sons. His brothers were jealous, and sold him to tradesmen who were travelling to Egypt. The tradesmen sold him to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. Potiphar’s wife was attracted to Joseph, and often made advances to him. On one such advance, she grabbed his tunic – Joseph ran away leaving his tunic behind, thinking, “my mas-ter has done all that he can for me. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Potiphar’s wife took the garment and used it to ac-cuse Joseph of trying to advance himself on her. As a result, Joseph was thrown in prison. After a few years in prison, Joseph interpreted the pharaoh’s dream predicting a massive drought, and advised him to prepare for it. Pharaoh put him in charge of all the land of Egypt. When the drought came, people came from all over the world to buy food from him. His brothers also came from Canaan. Joseph tested his brothers before revealing himself to them. He forgave them saying: “do not be grieved with yourselves be-cause you sold me; for God sent me before you to preserve life”. The noble Joseph is commemo-rated on Holy Monday because he is a prefigure-ment of Christ – he was betrayed by his closest people, and suffered for refusing to give in to sin. Despite his unfair suffering, Joseph remained loyal to God. It seemed that God had forgotten Joseph. This was certainly not the case, and Joseph was eventually rewarded for his loyalty in the ultimate way. Let us, too, show total loyalty to God, know-ing that despite the difficulties we may face, God will always be with us.

    T he sacrament of the Priesthood, was instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ, when He selected His Apostles to be his succes-sors and those who were to continue His work on earth. The priests (clergy) are them-selves the successors of the Apostles to this day.

    The ordination of a cleric (bishop, priest or deacon) takes place during the Divine Liturgy. Priests can only be ordained by a bishop, who places his hands upon the head of the candidate praying that God send His Grace upon him so he can fulfil his vocation. How-ever, it is the High Priest, Jesus Christ, who actually performs the sacraments through His Holy Spirit, whilst the priests are His visi-ble servants on earth for the performance of these sacraments.

    There are three offices of the priesthood: -

    1. Bishop - He can perform all the sacra-ments, especially that of ordination of the clergy. He is obliged to teach the people the truth of the Gospel, maintain correctly the teachings (dogmas) of the Church, and gov-ern his diocese not only in spiritual but also in practical matters.

    2. Priest - He can perform all the sacra-ments except that of ordination, and hear the confessions of the faithful, after special per-mission by the bishop.

    3. Deacon - He helps the bishop or the priest to perform the sacraments, but he him-self cannot alone perform any of them.

    The office of the clergy is enormously respon-sible and their calling is directly from God, so the faithful have a duty to obey them, support them and honour them.

    Χ ριστός Ανέστη!… Αληθώς Ανέστη!… Λόγια γνωστά απ’ όλους, γέλια κρυστάλλινα από παιδιά μισονυσταγμένα καθώς βγαίνουν στο προαύλιο της εκκλησίας του χωριού, της γειτονιάς, σε κάθε Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησιά σ’ όλον τον κόσμο!… Τσουγκρίζουν αυγά, ανταλλάζουν φιλιά κι ευχές… Το μεσονυχτιάτικο δροσερό α εράκ ι Φθ ι νοπωρ ι ν ό , Ανοιξιάτικο, τι πειράζει, χα ϊ δ ε ύ ε ι απαλά τ α πρόσωπα όλων όσοι έμειναν μέχρι το τέλος της Λαμπριάτικης Θείας Λειτουργίας. Μια Μυσταγωγία, ένα Μυστήριο, Φωταγωγία, Αναστάσιμη Αγγελική υμνωδία που συνοδεύει μαζί με μας τον Αναστάντα Χριστό. Εμφανίζεται, συνομιλεί, συντρώγει με τους Μαθητές, τις Μυροφόρες, τους δύο στο δρόμο προς Εμμαούς, κι ανάμεσά μας τούτο το μοναδικό πρωινό κάθε χρόνο!… «Ειρήνη ημίν» μας λέει!…Κι είναι η μόνη στιγμή αυτή του χρόνου, που μας γαληνεύει τον νου και την ψυχή κι αφήνει την καρδιά να ψηλαφίσει «Τον Κύριό της και τον Θεό της». Να νοιώσει ανείπωτες εμπειρίες εξωγήινης χαράς και δέους και ευγνωμοσύνης. Αγάπης, που θέλει, που αγκαλιάζει τα πάντα. Μορφές ζώντων και νεκρών πανηγυρίζουν με τους Αγγέλους ,μαζί μας, αυτή την ώρα!…. Χριστός Ανέστη!…Αληθώς Ανέστη ο Κύριος!… Το δροσερό αεράκι, καθώς πάμε για το σπίτι, γίνεται νέφος απαλό και διαποτίζει το είναι μας, το σπίτι μας, τα ζωντανά μας, το νοικοκυριό μας!…Με το Άγιο Φως, κομμάτι της Λαμπρής, σταυρώνει τον υψηλό οριζόντιο δοκό της πόρτας στην είσοδο ο Πατέρας. Κι ανάβει το ακοίμητο καντήλι η Μητέρα. Χριστός Ανέστη ψέλνεται κι αυγά τσουγκρίζουν πάλι, ενώ η μαγειρίτσα συγαχνίζει. Θύμισες παλιές, καινούργιες, εικόνες γλυκές, πικρές γίνονται μπαχαρικά, τη μέρ’ αυτή, ανάκατα με το ψητό αρνί και του κρασιού τη γεύση. Δεν είναι πια φαΐ. Θυμίαμα είναι και προσφορά και δάκρυα συγνώμης και μετάνοιας, χαράς και ευγνωμοσύνης φιλιά και αναφιλητά συγχώρεσης των συνανθρώπων. Είναι απελευθέρωση, αρχή καινούργιας ζωής. Ο Θρίαμβος της Ανάστασης αγγίζει κάθε ψυχή. Σκιρτά με της φύσης ,του σύμπαντος τη μυστική συγγενική επαφή, στο αντίκρισμα του θαύματος των

    θαυμάτων. Εκεί η ψυχή του πιστού συντετριμμένη και τεταπεινομένη από την εμπειρία του Θείου Πάθους συνανασταίνεται και ονειρεύεται και σχεδιάζει και αποφασίζει. Γίνονται θαύματα αλλαγής μέσα του για διό χιλιάδες χρόνια τώρα. Η Εκκλησία του Χριστού πεθαίνει

    κι ανασταίνεται με δέκα εκατομμύρια μάρτυρες στους τρεις πρώτους αιώνες. Αλλάζει την ροή της ι σ τ ο ρ ί α ς , ε ξ η μ ε ρ ώ ν ε ι ,

    εξευγεν ίζε ι λαούς η Βασιλεύουσα για χίλια χρόνια. Η ανθρώπινη

    αδυναμία και το θράσος των αιρετικών βυθίζουν τον υπερούσιο λαό του Θεού σε σκοτάδι σκλαβιάς για τετρακόσια χρόνια. Όμως η κάθε ανάσταση κόβει σιγά-σιγά τα δεσμά της αμαρτίας τα προσωπικά και τα του γένους. Τα θούρια του Ρήγα Φεραίου, του Κοραή τα συγγράμματα, αλλά πιο πολύ τα κηρύγματα του αγίου Πατροκοσμά καλλιεργούν συστηματικά τον λαό και τους ήρωες του 1821.Όλοι διαλαλούν με το στόμα του Κολοκοτρώνη την νέα Διαθήκη της Λευτεριάς, που υπέγραψε ο Θεός με τον Ραγιά. Οι Ήρωες παλεύουν και θαυματουργούν. Δεν παύουν δυστυχώς και οι διχόνοιες. Όμως στο πρόσωπο του Γιάννη Μακρυγιάννη, απ’ όλους πιο πολύ εκφράζονται όλες οι γνήσιες αρετές ανδρείας, παλικαρ ιάς , ε ιλ ικρ ινε ίας , ανιδ ιοτέλε ιας , αυταπάρνησης και αγνείας. Παλεύει τον κατακτητή τύραννο, μα τίμια, χωρίς θηριωδίες. Αντιμετωπίζει τη διχόνοια, το άδικο κατάματα, σταθερά, άφοβα και

    αποφασιστικά Κινδυνεύει πολλές φορές η ζωή του και στις μάχες και στις πολιτικές ραδιουργίες. Γράφει τα απομνημονεύματά του κρυφά και δεν ανακαλύπτονται για πάρα πολλά χρόνια. Παραμένει ως το τέλος ο πιο γνήσιος και απλός Πατριώτης. Διότι είναι πολύ

    θρήσκος και βαθιά ευλαβής φίλος του Χριστού και του Αϊ Γιάννη του προστάτη του. Αυτός και ο Πατροκοσμάς παραμένουν τα πιο γνήσιοι παραδείγματα για όλες τις εποχές. Το ότι είμαστε Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί σήμερα το χρωστούμε σε τέτοιους ανθρώπους. Ο κόσμος όσο κι αν άλλαξε σήμερα το θαύμα της Λαμπρής θα βρει και φέτος απλές κι αγνές ψυχές να σαγηνεύσει, να συγκινήσει, να μετατρέψει για να θαυματουργούν. Κι εμείς λοιπόν καλούμαστε φέτος καλοπροαίρετα, φιλότιμα να υπακούσομε στο κάλεσμα, για να δεχτούμε ταπεινά τις πύρινες γλώσσες της Χάριτος του Αγίου Πνεύματος.

    Spiritual Evening for Ομάδες

    On Tuesday evening, 12th April, a moving Απόδειπνο (Compline) Church Service was held for all Ομαδόπουλα of Sydney at the chapel of St Arsenios in Earlwood. Presiding at the Service was Fr Eusebios, priest-monk of the Monastery of Παναγία Παντάνασσα, Mangrove Mountain, who delivered a sermon on the lives of Saints Joasaph and Varlaam of India

    Talk/Afternoon Tea for Radio Programme On Sunday 3rd April, an afternoon tea including a talk in Greek, was held at the Church Hall of St Euphemia, Bankstown, in order to raise much-needed funds for the radio programme “The Voice of Orthodoxy”. The in-spiring talk titled “General Makriyiannis and his Role in the Greek Revolution of 1821” was given by Mr Maky Tsomis, Ancient History Co-ordinator at Wenona School, North Sydney. During the afternoon tea, a very generous donation of $11,000 was made by Mrs Vivian George, on behalf of the Ladies Christian Friendly So-ciety. This amount was raised from sales of the book “Remembering Greece’s Occupation”, written by La-dies of the Friendly Society, on their moving childhood memories of oppression in Greece during Word War II. Many thanks are owed to the Ladies as well as to all who generously donated in aid for the “Voice of Ortho-doxy” programme.
