From the “Old” world to the “New”

Add domesticate, nomad, and climate to you list of essential vocabulary. (We will define these during class.)

Essential Question: What are the possible ways in which humans came to the Americas?

Agenda:1. Bell Ringer2. Cornell Notes

(with template)3. Beringia, and the

first “Americans”4. “Old World” vs.

“New World”5. Outline possible

answer for today’s essential question.

The Bering Land Bridge

Most historians and scientists believe that humans traveled to the Americas over the Bering Land Bridge

Global temperatures were much colder between 10,000 and 100,000 years ago

•Glaciers covered most of the Earth, and sea level was much lower.•Humans are believed to cross from Siberia to Alaska b/w 20,000 and 30,000 years ago.

Nomadic Peoples

The humans that crossed into the Americas followed herds of the animals they hunted.

They depended entirely on these animals.

They were Nomadic because they moved from place to place in search of food.Pics include recreations of a mammoth hunt, and an ice age home made of mammoth bones

Paleolithic to Neolithic

The nomadic hunter-gatherers were considered PALEOLITHIC (means “old stone”, for old stone age)

Some 8,000 years ago, people “stumbled” into farming.

Farmers in Central America began to grow forms of corn, squash, and beans.

This “discovery” is considered to be the most important event in history.

It was the beginning of the NEOLITHIC ERA

Animal Domestication Animals were first

domesticated in S.W. Asia ~12,000 years ago.

Domestication happened in the Americas much later, because it took centuries for humans to migrate across the Bering Bridge

Animals domesticated in the Americas include:Dogs turkey, alpacas, and guinea pigs

Domestication To adapt (animals or plants) to the

human way of life (advantage).

Page 7: Add domesticate, nomad, and climate to you list of essential vocabulary. (We will define these during class.) Essential Question: What are the possible

Why did it take so long? For a long time,

historians wondered why civilization took longer to develop in the Americas that it did in Asia and Europe.

Were the Asian and European people just naturally better?

Was there more available to them?

Crops and animals live within certain CLIMATES.

Because temperatures change as we move North or South, certain crops can no longer grow.

This is a reason why civilization moved slower in the Americas

Why did it take so long? The direction

of migration is East to West in Asia, while it is North to South in the Americas.

This slows the spread of domesticated crops.

What happens as you head North in the United States? Can you grow the same things in NC as in Canada?
