About the Department of Management Sciences

The Department of Management Sciences at the City University of Hong

Kong is noted for its strong academic programmes. Most of the staff obtained their doctoral degrees from prominent universities in USA, Canada, UK and Australia. Together, they have many years of local and overseas experience in teaching and consulting. The size and the activities of its staff have made the Department one of the largest departments of management sciences in the Asia-Pacific region. The Department has three main functions: teaching, research and professional services. In all three areas, the work carried out is business oriented, with an emphasis on practical application of quantitative skills.

The teaching and degree programmes offered by the Department are wide ranging, and emphasize the applications of quantitative techniques in a very broad sense. It produces graduates who are well received by local business organizations, testified by the positions held by past graduates. The staff’s superior teaching skills are well recognized and the Department has won three Teaching Excellence Awards presented by the University.

One of the major functions, and indeed strength, of the Department is its research capability. The Department has received funding for 169 research projects, with total grants of over HK$57.2 millions. Staff’s fields of interest are wide ranging, reflecting the mixture of research cultures and specializations in the Department. Research papers of members of the Department are published in such refereed journals of high international repute as Annals of Operations Research, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Journal of Operational Research Society,

Management Science, Operations Research, Transportation Research, among others.

Our Department is dedicated to making significant contributions to the economic prosperity of Hong Kong, China and Southeast Asia. The development of the Hong Kong Consumer Satisfaction Index and the Centa-City Index, the joint partnership with SAS to establish the Knowledge Discovery Centre and the alliance programme with SAP to set up the e-Logistics laboratory strongly testify our commitment to serve the local community and to collaborate the industries in the region.

We also pride ourselves on our collaboration with industry in the search for relevant and useful solutions to the real life problems facing businesses and organizations in the present day. The Department’s staff bring in vast regional and international consultancy, executive training and work experience. In addition, the Deparment’s industrial contacts help students in their search for high quality employment. The list of client companies and consultancy tasks undertaken bears witness to this. In Hong Kong, members have carried out consultancy projects or executive training workshops for local organizations such as Mass Transit Railway Corporation, Cathay Pacific Airways and Kowloon Motor Bus (1933) Co. Ltd., etc. Internationally, the Department has worked for American Express, Eastman Kodak and AT&T.

What is Management Science

Management Science (MS) is the professional discipline that deals with

the application of science and information technology for informed managerial decisions making.

In the contemporary business environment, the ability to make appropriate and timely decisions is vital to corporate success. There is a growing demand in all public and business sectors for professionals who are able to utilize advanced scientific decision making tools and information technologies. Our programme is designed to produce such professionals.

MS professionals aim to provide a rational basis for decision making by seeking to understand and structure complex situations. This understanding is then used to predict system behavior and improve system performance. Much of these works is done using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and manipulate quantitative and computer models of organizational systems.

MS is distinguished by its broad applicability and by the wide variety of career opportunities and work styles it embraces. MS specialists may be theoreticians or practitioners. They may work in academia, in industry, or in public service, teaching, doing research, consulting, or implementing MS strategies/models. However, a growing number of MS professionals are moving from technical positions into managerial functions. Their work has achieved an increasingly important role in both the public and private sectors. After graduation, our fresh graduates find jobs as business analysts, logistic / supply chain assistants, bank officers/trainee, MIS (Management Information Systems) officers, marketing assistants, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) consultants etc. Depending on their interests and opportunities, graduates from earlier years have now advanced into senior positions, such as senior analyst, assistant manager, manager, vice president, director in manufacturing, market research, logistics,

banking, financial, telecommunications, information technology sectors, and many other areas that aim to improve business productivity and efficiency. MS concepts and methods, then, are very widely used; the profession offers a great variety of flexible and promising career paths.

Our BBAMS programme aims to equip students with state-of-the-art decision making tools. Students gain essential skills in building computer based decision models and learn how to analyze complex decisions. Our graduates are however not only technical experts, they also have a sound overall knowledge of business operations and are trained in business communication. The recent integration of logistics and supply chain management training into our programme provides our graduates with a core competence and competitive advantage in embracing the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

MS3106 Simulation (2011-12)

From one of the best teams:

We have conducted a project for toilet on the 5/F in City University of Hong Kong. We aimed to shorten the waiting time of these toilets in the peak hour from 12:20 to 12:30 and 13:20 to 13:30.

To build a realistic model, our team observed and drafted the flow and locations in the program. We collected data such as number of users during twenty minutes’ intervals, waiting and service time. After the collection of data, we need to list out the assumptions of the model, and then perform data analysis by carrying out independence tests leant in other course.

In this project, we used the simulation software called ServiceModel to simulate and perform the validation check. We modified the setting of toilets and found out the best suggestion that improves the user efficiency of the toilets.

After this project, we have learned how to apply the concept of simulation and statistics to solve real life problems. It is a great opportunity for us to practice the skills and techniques of using ServiceModel.

MS3111 Quantitative Business Analysis with Visual Basic for Applications

The VBA project aims at solving a self-designed problem by using Office 2010 Excel with VBA. The project details of one of the best team are described in the following:

• Identify a problem to solve

We decide to develop an Education Fund Planning System which suggests the optimal amount to be saved, invested and borrowed so as to minimize the amount required to set up the education fund, subject to the amount that can be saved or invested each year and the risk tolerance level of the user.

• Design methodology for solving the problem

To minimize the amount required to set up the education fund via saving, investing and borrowing with saving limit and risk affordability of the user, we apply an optimization method of a linear programming model developed in Microsoft Excel and use solver to find the optimal solution.

• Design types of data, ways of retrieving and storing data

The application firstly provides a questionnaire to users to determine their risk tolerance level. After completing the questionnaire, the level of risk they can afford is analyzed. Then the portfolio composed by stock, bond and savings deposit will be recommended to users under their risk tolerance level, and past returns of the portfolio is retrieved from the Internet. After that, the portfolio investment returns can be estimated. Finally, the formation of education fund requires users to input the information of their goals.

• Develop VBA macros to automate and control a wide variety of Excel tasks

The VBA macros help to develop a tailor-made program by entering program codes. For example, creating workbooks and worksheets, adding and transferring data, applying looping and conditional statements.

• Design and develop a decision support system using Excel VBA

We run the VBA and create a result.

• Develop ways to present solutions

Based on the estimated investment returns, the application will generate different reports of education fund.

• Present in the class and write a final report

We explain how to use our application in class and write a report for our project. Through the VBA project, students can learn how to solve a problem efficiently by using a VBA program that automates complicated and repetitive Excel tasks.

Reflections of Our Students on Internship

One of our students worked as 1-year intern at Hang Seng Bank Ltd. (2010-11):

In the academic year 2010-2011, I had an opportunity to work as a one year full-time intern in Lending and Cards Section, Business Strategy and Implementation Department, Corporate and Commercial Banking of Hang Seng Bank Limited. My major duties were to assist in conducting data analysis and preparing financial analysis and periodic management information reports, including commercial card penetration reports, loan performance reports and SME Loan Guarantee Scheme industry statistics to the government. I have also supported administrative work and different kinds of ad-hoc and special projects, like User Acceptance Test on commercial card online application system, commercial card promotion marketing strategy, mortgage loan proposal approval streamlined project etc.

Although I deferred one year of my study, it was a valuable experience that I have ever had. I had a fruitful year in Hang Seng Bank. I appreciated that my team gave me great support, guidance and chance to get involved in different parts of the work. During this year, I had been exposed to the real financial world which I had not much knowledge about it before. I paid more attention to the local news which might cause the amendment of the reporting formats and credit guidelines according to the change of the government policies. I have also been well reinforced in interpersonal skills, time management skills, problem solving skills and multi-tasking skills. It was a great time that I know how strong my working ability and productivity can be and how much I can work under pressure. This internship prepares me to become a mature, valuable and potential employee for my graduate job and let me figure out what I really want to do in the future.

Reflections of Our Students on Internship

One of our students worked as summer intern, Market Research atATOS Information Technology HK Ltd. (summer 2011):

Last summer, I worked in an IT company called ATOS. It is a big enterprise worldwide. Its main businesses are Managed Service, System Integration and Application Development. My main tasks are to do research on data center outsourcing and cloud computing trends in HK.

The most important thing I have learned is the soft skill, rather than hard skill. As the colleagues are busy, no one takes care of me. In the first week, I have not talked with my colleagues. I even have lunch myself. It is totally different from what I saw on TV. I was very depressed. I started to do something for improvement. I try to talk with my colleagues actively. I try to request for tasks actively if I do not have anything to do. The situation changed after I have taken these actions. Now, I can get along with my colleagues well.

This is a valuable experience for me. The work environment is totally different from university life. In my opinion, working is a give-and-take game. You need to give out something to help the company before you take something. There are many opportunities in a company. Whether you can take it or not, depends on your effort. This experience really engraves on my heart, “Proactiveness is one of the key to success in a new environment.”

I can give one recommendation to the fellow students. Don’t be afraid of failure. You have chance in university, but not in work place. Please treasure the internship opportunity to widen the horizon. Chances are only ready for well-prepared students.

Peer-Assisted Learning Supplemental Instruction (PALSI) Scheme

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a cooperative learning model designed to enhance students’

understanding in course materials and improve students’ overall learning and reasoning skills. The Scheme is intended to run for 9 weeks, from week 4 to week 12 (Semester B).

Senior students who have performed well in the department core courses are invited to play the role of SI leaders. They meet with junior students (SI student), studying in the same course, to discuss academic work and share tips on effective learning strategies.

SI students meet with SI leaders 2 hours per week in groups, SI leaders will assist the SI students to better prepare for classes, formulate study plans and review of class materials. This will help them to master the course’s content and improve their learning and thinking skills. SI students prepare for the weekly meeting by studying the course materials beforehand, formulating relevant questions, and identifying the focus of the meeting.
