AP Physics C

What is it? AP Physics is the one of the final science

credits offered by Forsyth Central. After taking Honors/AP Biology and Chemistry, students will find themselves at a final level of science in the mechanics of physics.

This class expands a single semester section on the mechanics of physics into its own 2 semester class. As the year proceeds the course will look deeper into the kinematics, dynamics, energy, rotation, momentum, simple harmonic motion and applied usages of physics in real life.

Why you should take it?

Primarily this class will prepare you for the wide field of physics that you will find in college. AP Physics C will start the student on lessons that can be observed in the real world preparing them for a broader range of study in college such as quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and thermodynamics.

Why you should take it?

Secondly this class is an AP course available for a college credit giving the student the opportunity to bypass mechanics if they choose to pursue a physics or engineering field in college. Obtaining a 4 or 5 (depending on the college) on the AP exam taken at the end of the year will allow the student to gain the college credit.

Physics C has 6 units: Kinematics Newton’s laws of motion Work, energy and power Systems of particles and linear momentum Circular motion and rotation Oscillations and gravitation

Skills aquired

Several skills will be picked up by the student as they progress through the course. They will design their own experiments to explain real world physics in action. When they gather their data they will come to critically analyze it and write professional lab conclusions. Physics is a mix of hands on and observational learning and the experiments conducted will give them the skills necessary to construct and analyze real world phenomena.

AP Exam

Section I 35 Multiple choice questions 50% of the final grade 45 minutes

Section II 3 Free response questions Laboratory based and discrete questions 50% of final grade 45 minutes

Students

Students should have taken a calculus and laboratory based class.
