定语从句的用法 :

1. 当先行词是物时 , 用 which 或 that引导 .These are the trees which were planted last year.

2. 当先行词是人时 , 用 who, whom,

whose, that 引导 .

The man who is speaking at the meeting is a worker.

The man is a worker.

The man is speaking at the meeting.

1. who 指人 , 作主语或宾语 ( 作宾语可省略）The man （ who/that/whom) I talked with is our teacher.

A person who/that steals things is called a thief.

The woman whom they wanted to visit is a teacher.

The woman is a teacher.

2. whom 指人 , 作宾语 ( 作宾语可省略 , 如介词提前则不能省 )

The man (whom/who/that) I spoke to is Mr. Li.

3.whose 多指人，也可指物，在定语从句中作定语，表示引导词与 whose 后的名词为所属关系。 whose 指物时可与 of which 互换使用。 Whose 用来代替 his/her/their/its.

This is the book whose cover is blue.

This is the book of which the cover is blue.

4. that 指人 / 物，作主语或宾语 ( 作宾语可省略）

A plane is a machine. It can fly.

A plane is a machine that/which can fly.

He is the man. I told you about him.

He is the man (that/who/whom) I told you about.

（作主语，不可省略。）

（作宾语，可以省略。）

5. which 指物，作主语或宾语 ( 作宾语可省 略 , 如介词提前则不能省 )

These are the trees which/that were planted last year.

This computer （ which/that ） he is using ismade in China.

Is this the library (which/that) you borrow books from?

Is this the library from which you borrowbooks? 指物，只用 which

（作主语，不可省略。）

6.that 和 which 在指物的情况下一般都可以互换 , 但在下列情况下 , 一般用 that 而不用 which 。(1) 先行词为 all, everything, nothing, something, anything, little, much 等不定代词时。

I am sure she has something (that) you can borrow.

(2) 先行词被 all, every, no, some, any, little, much 等 修饰时。

I’ve read all the books that are not mine.

(3) 先行词被序数词或最高级修饰时。

This is the first book (that) he has read.

(5)先行词是 who 或 who 引导的主句。 Who is the girl (that) drove the car?

Who (that) broke the window will be punished.

(4) 先行词被 the only, the very, the same, the last 修饰时。

This is the very book that belongs to him.

(6)主句以 There be 引导时 There are 200 people (that) didn’t know the thing.

7. 关系副词是用来引导定语从句的，它和关系代词一样 , 在从句中代替先行词 , 在句中作状语。 where: 在从句中作地点状语 , 指代地点 . when: 在从句中作时间状语 , 指代时间。

1.The hotel wasn’t clean. + We stayed at the hotel.The hotel where we stayed wasn’t clean.The hotel at which we stayed wasn’t clean.The hotel (which) we stayed at wasn’t clean.

2.I’ll never forget the day. +I joined the League on that day. I’ll never forget the day when I joined the League. I’ll never forget the day on which I joined the League .
