The Art of 6reg Henry I mages of bulls, roosters, chickens,

fences, buckets and gardens can be found throughout the paintings and

sculptures of Greg Henry. In each of his pieces lies a story waiting to be interpreted and told. The work of the Assistant Profes­sor of Art at Christopher Newport Univer­sity plays on nature and the environment. At first glance his work may seem primitive, but after more critical observation one notices that it speaks to the complexities oflife.

Henry has a passion for art and his works are gaining recognition throughout the nation. A mosaic, designed by Henry, of a giant bull with a rooster perched on its back decorates the floor of the new main con­course at the National Airport in Washington. Henry ' s illustrations for Chickens/Chickens! received the Parent's Choice Silver Honors award for the best il­lustrated children's book in 1995. Permanent collections ofhis work are on display at Ohio University, the Museum of Western Virginia and the Hampton University Museum.

Henry's works are drawn from his Guyanese childhood, and African-American and Southern cultures. His media include quilts, ironworks, decorative yards, textiles, wood carvings and benin gold weights (three-dimensional hieroglyphics.)

The image of a bull is central to many of his pieces. Henry uses it both as a reminder of his homeland, where cattle frequently graze alongside the road, and as a figure from mythology that is strong, stubborn and brutish.

Henry juxtaposes different animal forms to tell different stories. "I would like to be a

storyteller," says Henry. "Some artists are better at it than others. I'm still growing. One day I will be able to tell great stories about the beauty of humanity through my work."

The well known artist doesn't realize he has already "arrived." A critic from the The New York Times has praised Henry's work and called him a young artist "worth watching."

Henry reflects on some of his earliest experiences with artistic construction. His childhood home in Georgetown, Guyana was built on stilts like many others in the capitol city. He would dig berms of dirt and trenches to carry the water from one side of the house to the other.

Henry's family moved to the United States when he was twelve. His interest in

Henry's completed work, Moving Landscape. The piece was part of the exhibit, Uncommon Ground, at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the spring.

art continued to grow in a woodshop and architectural design class at Alexander Hamilton Vocational Techni­cal High School in Brooklyn, New York. There, Henry was introduced to his first teacher of art. "1 would fin­ish the project for the week in a day and ask the teacher 'What should I work on next?"' Henry soon began designing and making the kits for the wood projects that the class would complete.

Henry's study of art continued as he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1985 and a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 1987.

"The history of art is very important to me," said Henry. "Artists need to have a sense of the past and what's been done. I believe an artist needs to look at other art­ists and understand why they came into prominence and others did not. Those are questions I ask myself and my students."

Henry teaches ceramics, print making, wheel throwing and sculpture. He loves interacting with his students and helping them master their craft. "I get tremendously excited when I see my students succeed," said Henry. "It's up to me to help them see their uniqueness so they can learn to express it. Before they even get to that point I help them develop their skills as visual artists," said Henry.

Henry's role models include John Biggers, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Pablo Louise Picasso, Henry Moore, Matisse, Van Gogh, among many others. "I like the artists for different reasons. In many cases their personal lives, experiences and struggles contribute to my appreciation for them," said Henry.

Henry's newest work is still in the de­sign stages. "It's a life-size steel bull, trot­ting. Next to the bull is a five-foot rooster. They're in the middle of a dance." Henry's first life-size bull took six months to complete.

Henry says the difficult part about be­ing an artist isn't creating the work, but coming up with a creative idea that expands and pushes the boundary of creativity. "Once I heard Miles Davis say, 'I Jove ballads', but he also said he hated them," said Henry. "Davis could create a beautiful ballad, but it was too easy, so he would put it aside. I usually find myself putting to­gether pieces of work with the formal elements of art - harmony, rhythm and balance- but then I would question ifl was pushing and challenging myself enough.

"How can I share what I do? How can I touch the human spirit with what I do? That's the most important thing to me right now."

B efore a standing room only crowd, Christopher Newport University President Paul Trible

praised the hard work of faculty and staff, recognized community leaders for their support and announced the acquisition of the Crestar Bank Building. The occasion, which began with a rousing performance by CNU's Jazz Ensemble, marked the opening of the University's academic year.

"We gather today to celebrate the be­ginning of a new academic year and to cel­ebrate the many successes that together we have achieved in recent months," said Trible.

"I am happy to report that this fall CNU will have the best qualified and largest en­tering class in our thirty-seven year history," said Trible. Seven hundred freshmen, the highest number ever, registered for classes. Nearly 4,900 students are attending CNU this fall.

Average SAT scores of entering fresh­men are up by fourteen points. More than five hundred students are living in CNU's residence hall this year, an increase of I 00 residential students over last year. The President announced the University will ask the General Assembly for authorization to build a second residence hall which would open in falll999.

The energy and enthusiasm of the audience soared as Trible paid special tribute to Associate Director of Admissions Bob La Verriere and the Admissions Office staff. La Verriere, on behalf of the Office of Admissions, accepted a framed article from the front page of the Daily Press, entitled "CNU Freshmen Enrollment Up 43%."

In an historic moment, Trible recognized and personally thanked each of the University's former Presidents - Scott Cunningham, Dr. James Windsor, Dr. John Anderson and Dr. Anthony Santoro for their contributions.

"Let me say a word about our talented faculty," said Trible. "The great teaching and personal attention we pay to our stu­dents sets us apart, but so does the impor-

tant work of our faculty to create and share knowledge and to serve the University and the larger community."

The President singled out several re­search projects at the University, including: projects at NASA by James Tarr, James Here­ford and Martin Buoncristiani; optical prop­erties and nanostructures by Peter Knipp; and a book on Woodrow Wilson by Bob Saunders.

"In short, our colleagues' work ranges from seeking to solve the puzzles ofthe uni­verse, to improving our economic and civic life, to enriching the human spirit," said Trible. "This is truly important work you are doing, and we thank you all."

In addition, Trible welcomed the University's new faculty and staff. He also thanked the buildings and grounds crew for making the campus more beautiful and clean. He recognized the women's track team on its tenth national championship at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.

Warwick and Hiden Boulevards. The four story, forty-thousand square foot office building was purchased by the Christopher Newport University Real Estate Foundation and will become the home of the University's business programs and the newly formed Virginia Electronic Commerce Technology Center (VECTEC) in the spring. Crestar will rent the first floor of the building, and a part of the second floor will be occupied by the law firm ofDavid Kamp. The remaining space will provide offices for seventy faculty members and four additional classrooms.

"More students require more class­rooms," said Trible. "Our professors need first class offices. We need more seminar rooms and computer labs.

"Over the longer term we will build two new academic buildings and probably con­vert Radcliffe into a two story classroom building when the new Sports and Wellness Center is completed."

Trible then thanked Gary Powell, Presi­dent of Crestar Bank on the Peninsula, and Bill Butler, President, Crestar's Eastern Region, for making the expansion opportunity possible.

COMPOSING HER WORLD T housands of miles from

her roots, Jennifer Barker has created a new home at

Christopher Newport University. Raised in a small village outside Glasgow, Scotland, surrounded by the lush, green Scottish Highlands, Barker's music composition is inspired by nature.

Barker, Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Composition at CNU, has established herself as an internationally respected composer and pianist. Her works have been performed by the Moravian Philhar­monic Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Curtis Institute of Music, members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Holywell Ensemble, Marimolin and the Bearsden Burgh Choir.

Barker has won numerous awards in piano performance at the Edinburgh Festival. She won the Helen L. Weiss Music Prize for Composi­tion at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, was an award winner in the 1993 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and in 1996, she won the Cambridge Contemporary Music Festival Competition with her composition The Enchanted Glen, performed by the Holywell Ensemble.

Barker's interest in piano began at the age of five when she started taking piano lessons. Early in her career, Barker began a rigorous program of study as a professional accompanist. Barker said her parents are avid music lovers and encouraged her and her siblings to pursue their musical interests.

"Mom and Dad, because they both loved music and were sorry they didn't have the opportunity to take lessons, insisted on giving each of us piano lessons and in­strument lessons." Barker was also active in the local choir, wind band and orchestra.

"Amateur music has always been a big part of our family," said Barker. "My grand­father directed a 200-youth chorus at his local church."

As Barker's musical interests blos­somed, she discovered a new talent - com­posing. "I like it because it combines my creative side with my musical side.

To date she has written 20 composi­tions. Her first, written while an undergradu­ate at the University of Glasgow in Scot­land, was a chorus piece. While pursuing a Master's degree in piano performance at Syracuse University in New York, Barker began to develop her talent for composition.

After completing a year as an adjunct instructor at Syracuse, Barker studied under the world- renowned American composer, George Crumb. At the Univer­sity of Pennsylvania, Barker earned a Doc­tor of Philosophy in Music Composition.

In addition to her degrees, Barker was awarded a place on the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's Young Composers' Course with Sir Peter Maxwell-Davies and Judith Weir. She applied and was selected as one of eight young composers from around the world to work on compositions

under the critique of the masters. Barker says the experience in the Orkney Is­lands was a once-in- a-lifetime opportu­nity. "There was nowhere to write ex­cept out in the fields with the cows and sheep," said Barker. "I would just roam the island, climb the hills and write music."

Barker created one of her favorite works during the course - a string trio. "It's got a lot of Scottish influence to it," said Barker. "A lot of my music has the influence of the heritage of Scotland in it. The trio, especially, captures the serenity of the islands.

"Ifi climb the hills at home, that's where I find my creativity," said Barker. "I look out across the hills, and I hear these great sounds coming by."

Since arriving at CNU in 1994, Barker has taken on a number of responsibili­ties. Barker is music director of the op­era workshop and musical. She is the founder and administrator of the annual Conversations with a Composer series at CNU. During the past three years the

series has gone from featuring a local composer to the premiere of a new work. This year, the series featured Barker's mentor, Crumb.

Barker is also founder and artistic di­rector of the Christopher Newport Univer­sity Contemporary Music Ensemble, a pro­fessional chamber ensemble. She intends to market a CD to help in the recruitment of students and faculty.

Barker has begun working on a music theatre production which she intends to complete within the next year.

Largest Gift in CNU History to Fund Virginia Electronic Commerce Technology Center

Christopher Newport University President Paul Trible announced the establishment of the Virginia Electronic Commerce Technology Center (VECTEC) in a joint news

conference October 16 with Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology (CIT), BTG Incorporated and Newport News Shipbuilding. The project is supported by a $500,000 gift from BTG, one of the country's largest providers of computer systems, services and products to government and commercial markets. CIT and Newport News Shipbuilding have provided significant support for VECTEC, including a $50,000 grant by CIT to study electronic commerce strategies for VIrginia.

Trible said, "The exciting work of Bill Winter, Bill Muir and other colleagues at SEVAnet will now go statewide through VECTEC. CNU, CIT, and important private sector partners will be on the cutting edge in harnessing the power of information technology to ensure that Virginia remains globally competitive and economically alive in the 21st century."

VECTEC's mission is to advance the use of electronic commerce throughout the Commonwealth. VECTEC will offer technological assistance to business and government, provide education and training programs in electronic commerce, mount world-class research and development pro­grams, and plan and carry out innovative programs to promote the use of electronic commerce in Virginia.

Randall Fuerst, Senior Vice President and General Manager for BTG, noted that VECTEC will keep Virginia on the leading edge of the information age. "Electronic commerce is revolutionizing the way the world does business. With VECTEC, Virginia will be leading the revolution. We will set the standards for electronic commerce, so business and government will be turning to us for guidance and support. That means new business and jobs for Virginia."

human resources to respond. "CNU, SEVAnet and VECTEC will literally pioneer Virginia's exploration through electronic commerce and will be the first step in implementing the strategic plan that Virginia has called a blueprint for technol­ogy-based economic growth in Virginia, said Templin. "The epicenter for that strategy is here at Christopher Newport University, and CIT is pleased to join with other commercial supporters in seeing this effort grow."

Newport News Shipbuilding officials demonstrated how they use electronic commerce throughout the workplace. "By assisting Virginia and the Hampton Roads community in becoming more fully engaged in electronic commerce, VECTEC will assist Newport News Shipbuilding by providing faster procurement, better response time and improved quality," said Steve Hogan, Chief Information Officer of Newport News Shipbuilding.

VECTEC will officially open January 1998.

CNU Awarded More Than $1.9 Million in Grants Since January 1997 Christopher Newport University was awarded $1,927,467 in grants from January through October 1997. The total is the largest in the school's history! The 29 grants range from support for spectrographic analysis research at the NASA Langley Research Center to projects to develop and support electronic commerce at SEVAnet by Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology. Other grant awards include money earmarked for NASA 's Teacher Enhancement Institute, a computational investigation of airframe noise at NASA, and the development of software packages for the U.S. Navy.

CNU's Dr. Robert Atkinson Awarded $700,000 Grant from EPA

Christopher Newport University Assistant Professor of Biology,

Chemistry and Environmental Science, Dr. Robert Atkinson, will lead a team of scientists in a research project with the Environmental Protection Agency.

The project, supported by a $700,000 grant awarded this month, will monitor the Atlantic White Cedar resto­ration efforts in the Great Dismal Swamp and other selected locations. The three­year grant is the largest single grant ever given to CNU.

More than thirty-five undergradu­ates will work alongside CNU graduate students and faculty on the restoration project.

CNU Visiting Scholar Leads Worldwide Study of Earth's Atmosphere

CNU Visiting Scholar Dr. Nikita Pougatchev will lead a team of

twelve scientists from Canada, Japan, Germany, Belgium, Russia, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United States to measure pollution in the troposphere.

The three-year, $368,936 NASA grant will verify the measurement of pollution in the troposphere, the region

of the atmosphere that extends from the ground level to approximately eleven kilometers (about seven miles) altitude. Scientists will measure the amount of infrared absorption by carbon monoxide and methane molecules in the troposphere, using ground-based instrumentation, and compare the results with data from a satellite.

CNU Law Enforcement Grant Funds Fifty Scholarships for MAPSI Program

L aw Enforcement Officers in Christopher Newport University's

Mid-Atlantic Police Supervisory Institute (MAPSI) will now be able to enroll in the program for half the usual cost, thanks to a $66 ,611 grant awarded by Virginia's Department of Criminal Justice Services and the U.S. Department of Justice's Edward Byrne Memorial Fund. Beginning in 1998 fifty scholarships will be awarded to Jaw enforcement officers from all over the state ofVirginia.

MAPS I educates and trains first-line law enforcement supervisors in admin­istrative skills ranging from leadership strategies to ethics in government. Tom Dempsey, Director of MAPSI and Assistant Professor of Government and Public Affairs at CNU, wrote the proposal for the grant.

Christopher Newport University's freshman applica­tions and enrollment are thirty-percent above last year's. As of late August, I ,500 students applied for admission. More than 700 freshmen have enrolled at CNU, the University's largest and best qualified class in its history. CNU's largest freshman class previously was 554. In addition, CNU enrolled the largest number of Honors students, with an average G.P.A. of 3.5 and an average SAT score of 1250.

CNU President Paul Trible said, "The hard work of faculty, students, staff and alumni is paying off. More and more people are realizing what a special place this is."

Given the dramatic increase in applications and the desire of CNU to maintain a size that allows our faculty and students to maintain close contact, CNU standards for admission will increase for the coming year. This fall's freshmen posted a 13-point increase in the average SAT

score; 82-percent graduated with an advanced studies diploma; and two-thirds graduated in the top one-third of their high school classes.

The President's Leadership Program is a new program oriented toward values, vision and challenge. The Leadership Program includes 23 semester hours and a community service component. Students will be able to take advantage of this opportunity without taking extra classes - the leadership program is a minor which be­comes part of their degrees.

Courses will include a week-long outdoor challenge program, team-taught interdisciplinary examination of current issues, and a guaranteed internship.

Students selected for the leadership program who choose to live in Santoro Residence Hall will receive a $1 ,000 stipend toward room and board.

Christopher Newport University welcomed several new additions to its Student Services Division in the fall. CNU Remembers Earl and Leone Hatten

Newport News attorney Robert Hatten estab­lished the Earl R. and

Leone Q. Hatten Scholarship Fund in 1984. The scholarship in honor of Hatten's grandfather and grandmother, Earl and Leone Hatten, is awarded to an entering freshman.

Earl Hatten established CNU's first endowed gift in honor of his wife, Leone, in 1965. "When my grandmother died in 1964, my grandfather, Earl, do­nated a sum of money to the col­lege as a scholarship condi­tioned upon the school becom­ing a four-year university," said Robert Hatten. "My grandfather was committed to the future of CNU, from the time that Christopher Newport was still a dream in the eyes of Mr. (Lewis) McMurran and other founders of the college.

"Earl set an example for my father and me to emulate," said Robert Hatten. "Hopefully, this scholarship will do that."

Earl Hatten was born in Tyler, Texas and raised in Waco.

In 1915, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and he was attending graduate school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology when World War I broke out. For the next 18 months, he served as a Navy lieu­tenant and commanded a fleet of six submarine chasers in the North Sea. After sinking sev­eral German subs, he was awarded the Navy Cross in 1919.

Following his service in the military, Hatten returned to New York where he married Leone Quackenbush. Later, he worked as an oil surveyor in the Okla­homa oil fields and was manager of several companies, including the Mystic Connecticut Sea Sled Company, the H.E. Dodge Boat & Plane Corp. in Newport News, and Hutchens Chevrolet in Newport News. Finally, in 1935, he became the owner of Handy Oil Company, a Mobil Oil distributorship, which he operated until his retirement in 1965.

Lady of Grace: A Tribute to Cathleen B. Gaines

For more than twenty years, together, they served the community and Christopher

Newport University. The two ardent supporters of CNU, John and Cathleen Gaines, affection­ately known as John and Cat to their friends, showered the school with their love and support. Side by side they attended nearly every event in the life of the University, from the school's commencement exercises to Friends of Music gatherings.

In 1995, John and Cathleen Gaines were honored as Lifetime Members of the CNU Friends of Music. A year later, they were awarded the Honorary Alumni Award, the highest honor the Alumni Society can give to someone who did not graduate from CNU. Over the years, the Gaineses shared their resources with CNU through annual giv­ing and a generous estate gift. CNU's theatre is named in honor of Mr. Gaines.

"We have supported the University in many of its activi­ties, musical activities in particu­lar," said Mr. Gaines. "Cat was very fond of Mark Reimer (CNU

Director of Music) and, likewise, I think he appreciated her, too."

Sadly, this summer Mrs. Gaines died after a long illness. The Holiday Happening, CNU's winter concert featuring the Symphonic Band and Choirs, was given in her honor this year. "She loved that concert," said Reimer. "It is fit­ting that we pay tribute to this eloquent woman through the spirit of holiday music."

In addition to Mrs. Gaines' attendance at CNU concerts, she served five years as a board member for Friends of Music, a non-profit organization dedi­cated to the enrichment of the CNU music program.

"She loved life and she loved people," said Mr. Gaines. "I think she was overflowing with enthusiasm all the time. Everyone that she met, she made them feel that she was glad to see them, and she was. She was very fond of people.

"She was so wrapped up in the University. We can remember when it was so small, but the last few years it seems like it has sprung into new life, and it's something everyone in

town should be proud of," he said.

Mrs. Gaines was involved in community, civic and church activities as well. She was a mem­ber of the Peninsula Fine Arts Association, Virginia Orchestra League, Woman's Club ofHilton Village and James River Garden Club. She was also past presi­dent of the Nine Hole Group at the James River Country Club and founder of the James River Civic Club.

Mrs. Gaines was a librarian at Lenoir High School, Lenoir, N.C.; assistant librarian at Curry School, Woman's College, Uni­versity of North Carolina, Greensboro, N.C.; and librarian and teacher at Hilton School, Burlington, N.C. She held an A.B. degree from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and a B.S. in library science from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

Her favorite avocations were golf and bridge. In fact, she belonged to three different bridge dubs. She also had a great love for decorating. "At

Christmas, every room in the house would be decorated," said Gaines. "The stair railings would be wrapped in garland from the front to the back. She had deco­rations for every holiday of the year. She always looked forward to the holidays with great anticipation."

A Role Model for Giving - Edith Lea McMurran ---------------------------- -----------

Edith Lea McMurran was born in Victoria, Prince Edward Island, Canada,

on May 31, 1915, the daughter of the late Walter Maxwell Lea and the late Helena Maude Lea. Mr. Lea was Premier of Prince Edward Island in 1930-31, and in 1935-36.

A Peninsula resident for more than forty years, Mrs. McMurran shared her love for life with everyone she met. She was dedicated to her husband, Lewis Archer McMurran, Jr., a longtime member of the House of Delegates; her son, Lewis McMurran III; and daughter, Dee Dee Mausteller.

Mrs. McMurran's dedica­tion to her family was just one part of her life. "Mom's main

May 31, 1915- May 30, 1997 focus in life was her faith," said her daughter, Dee Dee Mausteller.

"She felt like she had been very blessed and wanted to share that with others," said Lewis McMurran III.

Mrs. McMurran attended the Williamsburg Community Chapel. In addition, she was on the board of directors of the Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center, and an active member of the Huntington Garden Club and the Community Bible Study. She loved the outdoors, especially working in her flower garden and going to the beach.

In addition to giving of herself to her family and com­munity activities, her estate plans included generous

bequests benefitting CNU, the University she and her husband loved so much. Fondly referred to as the "father" of Christopher Newport University, Lewis McMurran, Jr. listed the estab­lishment of the college as his proudest achievement. Del­egate McMurran is credited with establishing Christopher Newport College (CNC) as a branch of The College of William and Mary in 1960, and later, with helping to establish the College's independence from William and Mary in 1977. In 1985, CNC named McMurran Hall in his honor. Later, the McMurran family established the Lewis A. McMurran, Jr., Honors Scholars Endowment Fund.

"Mom and Dad supported CNU because people born and raised in the area could obtain a sound four-year education without having to leave," said Mausteller. "Dad was born and raised in Newport News and loved this city and the state of Virginia. My mother felt the same way."

A.LUMNI PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Alumni Society's 1997-1998 year. CNU is an exciting place to be right now. Admissions are at an all time high and the campus is experiencing a flurry of activity. YOUR Alumni Society is proud to have a part in this exciting period at CNU!

I want first to thank Randy Bryant, '91 for his outstanding job as President of the Alumni Society last year. Under his leadership, we saw the culmination and dedication of the Alumni Room in the Student Center. By the way, if you have not seen the room, make a point to check it out yourself the next time you have an opportunity to be on campus. I know that you too will feel proud as you see the reality of what was, only a short-time ago, a dream and a vision.

Also, under Randy's leadership, we had the largest crowd ever at Homecoming and Annual Dinner events. Other activities included a wonderful After-Work event at the home of Roni and Gerald Bright for Southside alums, and our annual Golf Classic was once again a tremendous success, in spite of a major downpour!

Alumni Society student support remained strong as four $1000 scholarships were once again awarded to deserving individuals. YOUR Alumni Society participated in other student events including Spring Madness, and residence hall projects. Last but not least, the Society provided a beautiful balloon arch for picture-taking opportunities at graduation.

And now, on to this year. I am pleased to be at the helm as the President of YOUR Alumni Society. We are currently at a crossroads and your Board of Directors is considering various new directions. We remain determined to carry out our purpose as stated in the Society's By-Laws: The purpose of the Society shall be to unite its members in an effective organization dedicated to promoting the educational advancement for Christopher Newport University, to strengthening the bonds of interest between the University and its Alumni, and to taking such other actions as may be deemed proper and essential for the steadfast advancement of the University and the Society.

In view of that, our major goal in 1997-98 is to increase active membership in our Society. In that direction we are planning to expand communications with our alumni and increase After-Work events. HOW CAN YOU HELP?

You probably know another graduate who is not a member. Suggest to this graduate that they contact us to become a member TODAY.

We now have CNU alumni in 49 out of 50 states, as well as in several international locations. I encourage you to take an active role in YOUR Alumni Society. There are several ways to contribute. We also welcome your ideas, energy and service to one of our many projects. Your involvement DOES help make a difference and you'll be glad you helped make that difference, espe­cially in this exciting period in our alma mater's history.

Alumni Society Recognizes Distinguished and Outstanding Alumni

recently honored four of its alumni

during an annual dinner meeting held by

the Alumni Society.

Gregg Klich, '84 received the

Distinguished Alumni Award, the high­

est honor bestowed upon a Christopher

Newport University graduate by the

Alumni Society. The award is given an­

nually to the person who has rendered

outstanding service to the University.

Klich graduated with a B.S. in

government administration from CNC

in 1984. Klich is Vice President of Park

Operations at Busch Gardens, a posi­

tion he has held since 1989. He has

more than eighteen years of theme park

experience. Klich is Vice Chairman of

the Christopher Newport University

Educational Foundation and received

the Christopher Newport Outstanding

Alumni Award in 1993. Also honored

1997 Golf Classic

Christopher Newport University's 1997 Annual Golf Classic raised more than $12,000 this year. The CNU Golf Classic was held at the Kingsmill Golf Club & Resort in

Williamsburg in July. The Golf Classic supports student scholarships and other

academic and athletic support programs. Money from last year's tournament was used to expand and transform the Alumni Room and unveil the Career Advisory Program for Networking (CAP'N). CAP'N, a joint venture sponsored by the Alumni Society and the Office of Career & Counseling, provides networking and career resource opportunities for students and alumni.

Thank you to the sponsors, golfers and volunteers who made this a successful event once again this year! Charles Ciccotti '86, has served as the chairman of the Golf Classic for the past two years.

Lieutenant Colonel David William Coker graduated in 1980 with a B.S. in

Business Administration from CNC and received the M.B.A. and M.S. in pro­curement and contract management

from Florida Institute of Technology in 1990 and 1991 respectively. Lieutenant Colonel Coker is a staff officer in the

Close Combat Systems Division in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development and

Acquisition. Beverly McDonald graduated in

1976 with a B.A. in education and received a Master's in Education with an emphasis in reading in 1980.

McDonald is principal of Palmer Elementary School in Newport News.

Kit Letchworth graduated in 1987

with a B.S. in Computer Science. Letchworth is Senior Vice President of

3-G International, Inc. , the world 's largest smart card integration service

provider.

Patricia Dixon ' 76, Newport News, VA, is the director of social services for The Salvation Army in Hampton. In addition to overseeing 3,000 social services clients, Dixon supervises senior CNU social work interns.

Ron Watkins ' 77, Richmond, VA, is a first sergeant with the Virginia State Police in charge of the Governor's Security deta il.

Debora h Anderson Isdell ' 78, Alexandria, VA, is a crimina l investigator for the U.S. Treasury Department.

Harrol A. Brauer UI '75, Hampton, VA , has been promoted to Sales and Marketing Director at WVEC-TV, Channel 13, Hampton Roads ' ABC affiliate . His new responsibilities include managing WVEC's sales, traffic and marketing efforts. Previously at WVEC he was local sales manager, national sales manager and account executive. Brauer is a board member of the Virginia Air & Space Museum, and past board member of Hampton Bay Days and the Peninsula Advertising Club. Brauer is also a member of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Marketing Association .

Eagle, Korea, is commander of the 1st squad­ron, 6th cavalry regiment. 1-6 Cavalry is an attack helicopter unit of24 helicopters and more than 300 personnel.

Marilyn Dayton ' 80, Newport News, VA, was selected as Teacher of the Year at Nelson Elementary School. Dayton recently completed her master's in administration and supervision at George Washington University.

Paul Duke ' 80, Cornelius, N.C., is a SVP and Risk Manager ofNationsBank.

Carol Lauter '81, Madison Heights, VA, is lead teacher at the Elon Head Start Center.

G igi J ohnson Sperling ' 82, is a physical education teacher at Lompoc High School. Sperling received a master's in physical educa­tion from UNC Greeley in 1995.

Mattie Baker Jackson '83, Mountain View, CA, is a contract specialist and contract officer with the Resident Office in charge of construc­tion in the San Francisco Bay area office at Moffett Federal Air Field. Baker received a master's in contract and acquisition management from Florida Institute of Technology.

Captain Douglas Schuetz '90, Chester, VA, was awarded a master's in public adminis­tration from University ofNebraska. Schuetz is commander of the Headquarters Company at Fort Lee, Virginia and was recently selected for the Army Acquisitions Corps.

Richard Stevens II '93, Winchester, VA, teaches German and social studies at Massanutten Military Academy. Stevens also coaches the boy's soccer team.

CoL Syme retired from the U.S. Army Transportation I ~ (D 5- ~ > Corps after 31 years of service and was a veteran of World I 9" g. ::;· § War II and the Korean War. Syme was president of I ~ ~ ~ ~ Christopher Newport University's Alumni Society from I ~ ~ ~ 1979 to 1980 and was a member of the current Alumni I - '-< Society Board. He served two terms on the Alumni Board I 1 and helped revise the Alumni Society's bylaws. Syme 1 _

was also a member of the Smithfield Lions Club and the Hilton Presbyterian Church.
