Bienvenue à Timmins ! Au nom de toute l’équipe de l’AOPLV/OMLTA, nous vous souhaitons la bienvenue à cette belle ville de Timmins, une vraie communauté qui valorise le bilingualisme et le pluriculturalisme. It is a true pleasure to be here in this beautiful city for the first OMLTA fall conference in the north since 2013. OMLTA/AOPLV is dedicated to showcasing our three tenets of advocacy, best practices, and collaboration with all of our members across every region of Ontario. It is with much gratitude that we thank all of the local staff at DSB1 for their kindness, leadership, hard work, and commitment to this important event.

It is an exciting time to be a second language educator in our province, as we look forward to additional learning opportunities from a variety of sources, including the OMLTA, in the next calendar year and beyond. Teachers from across Northern Ontario are encouraged to take advantage of all of the resources, supports, and, of course, professional development that the OMLTA provides.

Sincere thanks to our team, especially Sonia and Kim, our three outstanding keynote speakers, all of our amazing workshop presenters for sharing their knowledge, the staff of our host hotel and host institution, and everyone whose dedication and hard work has helped make this event a reality. Keynote Speakers / Notre conférencière et nos conférenciers d’honneur Léo-James Lévesque est conseiller pédagogique au Nouveau-Brunswick. Il est l’auteur de plusieurs livres de littérature jeunesse. Il a également participé à la conception et à l’élaboration de nombreuses ressources pédagogiques. Il est récipiendaire de la Bourse Hilroy, décernée par la Fédération des enseignantes et enseignants francophones du Canada pour l’innovation pédagogique. De plus, en 2008, l’Association canadienne des professeurs d’immersion lui a attribué le prix André Obadia en reconnaissance de son travail envers la promotion de l’apprentissage du français au Canada. Denis Cousineau se présente : “Je suis un jeune homme passionné du nord de l'Ontario, enseignant en FLS depuis plus de 30 ans. J'ai découvert le CECR et le DELF en 2009. Depuis je travaille avec une grande famille à travers l'Ontario et le Canada à promouvoir l'apprentissage du FLS et je collabore avec plusieurs intervenants afin de développer une compétence accrue chez nos apprenants. Mais au final je suis fasciné, voire passionné par l'idée de transformer une confiance fragile en une confiance solide chez tous : apprenants, enseignants et tous les Canadiens motivés par le multilinguisme.” With over 30 years of education experience, Denis is Canada’s DELF champion, expert, and leader. Further, he is constantly engaged by professional development, teacher training, and expanding opportunities for multilingualism among all Canadians.

Dr. Enrica Piccardo is an Associate Professor with the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning, and a member the Centre for Educational Research in Languages and Literacies at OISE/UT (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto). Her research is centred around French as a second and foreign language, the impact of the Common European Framework of Reference on language teaching and assessment, complexity theories and creativity, plurilingualism, and cognitive and emotional aspects of language acquisition. An expert on the CEFR and innovative programming, she is very excited to join the OMLTA in Timmins.

Workshop 1

A1 – Les trois objectifs du cadre stratégique de FLS dans la classe de secondaire Grades 7-12 Lisa Laframboise, Julie Théberge – Ottawa Catholic SB

Le ministère a établi trois objectifs qui appuie la vision pour le FLS en Ontario: améliorer l’assurance, la maîtrise de la langue et le rendement des élèves en FLS; accroître le pourcentage d’élèves qui étudient le FLS jusqu’à l’obtention de leur diplôme et; accroître l’engagement des élèves, du personnel scolaire, des parents et de la collectivité envers les programmes de FLS. Au cours des cinq dernières années, nous avons collaboré et continuons de le faire afin d’atteindre avec succès ces objectifs. Durant cet atelier, nous partagerons donc les clés de notre réussite et vous présenterons des exemples concrets qui nous ont permis d’atteindre les objectifs, comment nous planifions poursuivre vers cette direction. Nous présenterons aussi l’impact de nos résultats dans notre environnement.

A2 – La littéracie médiatique Grades 7-12, all FSL programs Sophia Berezowsky, Upper Canada College Cet atelier va explorer le monde de la communication de masse. Un des meilleurs outils un apprenant de français peut avoir est le savoir de naviguer les sites web en français. C'est ici que l'apprenant peut découvrir le monde francophone selon ses goûts et intérêts. Mais l'Internet est un monde immense et le rôle du professeur est de lui donner des outils nécessaires pour faire ces découvertes lui-même.

A3 – En français s’il vous plaît ! Grades 7-12, all programs Camille Dupuis, Sylvie Tripp – Rainbow DSB Help your students broaden their vocabulary and experiential horizons! Leave this workshop with a variety of cultural, authentic and purposeful oral activities aimed to motivate your students to speak en français not only in the classroom, but as members of their immediate and global communities. We’ll share with effective resources, useful video and audio apps, games and activities that will engage all learners and assist you in transforming your classroom into an inclusive environment, while inspiring your students to improve their oral communication skills.

A4 – Using Technology to Support CEFR Learning Grades 4-9, all FSL programs Kerri MacDonald and Stephanie Clement, DSB Ontario North East

Our workshop will focus on how we used technology to support student learning and application of the speaking, listening and writing strands of the French As a Second Language Curriculum.

A5 – Mathologie - M à 3 : Enseigner et apprendre les concepts mathématiques à l’aide avec Mathologie Grades K-3, Extended French and French Immersion Pearson Canada Venez découvrir un ensemble de ressources pour l’enseignement et l’apprentissage des mathématiques, présentées sous forme d’histoires stimulantes et engageantes pour les élèves, et de trousses d’activités. Chaque titre ou activité invite les élèves à découvrir plusieurs concepts mathématiques, à réfléchir et à participer à de nombreuses activités dans des contextes variés, dans des situations réelles ou imaginaires. Cette ressource se base sur la conviction que les élèves approfondissent leur compréhension des concepts mathématiques au fil du temps et progressivement. Une grille de progression des apprentissages a été conçue dans l’élaboration de cette ressource, ce qui vous permettra de choisir le livret ou l’activité qui correspond le mieux au degré de compréhension d’un(e) élève ou d’un groupe d’élèves.

Workshop 2

B1 – Science Teacher Association of Ontario (STAO) Project Innovation presents: Science & Technology Lessons for French as a Second Language Grades K-12, all levels of FSL Lisa Rossiter-Thornton, Toronto DSB/STAO Are you looking to have a better understanding of how you can use the Action-Oriented Approach in your science lessons in the FSL classroom? Do you have a group of students in your core French classes that would love science and would be highly engaged if you had an inquiry focus in the subject of science? Come to this workshop and see how the Science Teachers Association of Ontario (STAO) has worked hard this summer to write Science Lessons that are specifically designed for French as a Second language classrooms. You will learn about where to find them on the STAO website and get a chance to try one in a hands on activity.

B2 – Parlons ! Low-risk, High-fluency FSL Strategies Grades 4-12, all levels of FSL Angela Berry, Toronto DSB Are your students uncomfortable speaking in the target language? Anxious? Memorizing instead of communicating? Struggling to apply what you teach to real situations? B3 – Bringing the French Outdoors Grades K-3 Kelly-Ann Demers, DSB Ontario North East Lately, there has been a sudden and very needed push to return to nature and it truly is time for us to take a step back outside. This session will explore the different avenues that bring French language acquisition outdoors in a fun and authentic way to our youngest learners.

B4 – FRANÇAIS SANS FRONTIÈRES ou comment développer en français la compréhension interculturelle de vos élèves Grades K-12, all levels of FSL Annie Bourdeau, Denis Cousineau – IDÉLLO En collaboration avec le Ministère de l’Éducation de l’Ontario, IDÉLLO vous présente FRANÇAIS SANS FRONTIÈRES, un espace sécurisé dans lequel vos élèves FLS partageront leur culture en produisant des récits numériques et balados. Découvrez des tutoriels pour élèves, des guides pour enseignants et plein d’autres ressources et outils pédagogiques innovants.

B5 – Experiences Canada: Second language learning through youth exchanges Grades 7-12, all FSL programs Jamie McCullough, Experiences Canada Experiences Canada is a non for profit organization that funds youth travel across Canada. Youth travel in groups of 10-30 for one week and become immersed in language and culture. The groups spent 7 days in their twin community and through activities and home time gain an appreciation for the diversity within Canada and gain an appreciation for speaking a second

language. Youth also development relationships that last for a lifetime. The exchange program is reciprocal and once the first group travels, they get an opportunity to host their twins and through hosting activities introduce them to their community. Enhancing a second language through experiential learning is a unique way for teachers to encourage youth to practice and speak their second language.

Workshop 3

C1 – Popular Québécois Songs and Singers Grades 4-12, all FSL programs Marian Rose, www.marianrose.com

Music has always been a powerful force at the heart of Québécois culture, and the modern scene includes some wonderfully creative individuals and groups. This session will go beyond ‘Mon Pays’ to explore an array of popular songs that present a gold mine of linguistic possibilities in the language classroom.

C2 – The CEFR and your 4-8 Classroom Denis Cousineau – Pearson Canada

As well, Pearson is conducting an interactive workshop on recently published resources Échos pro and Mon réseau, ma vie. This workshop will highlight how these resources are connected to the CEFR and offer teachers a deeper understanding of the framework. Also explored in this session is how educators can support A1 and A2 students in becoming more confident learners. The more confident student is a more engaged citizen, or acteur social. Échos pro and Mon réseau, ma vie were designed to support and guide pedagogical shifts and practices in FSL teaching, namely the CEFR, the action-oriented approach, differentiation and the updated 2013 FSL curriculum.

C3 – Transforming FSL with iPads - Successes, Challenges and Tips Grades 7-12, all FSL programs Beverly Kukhta-Jackson, Hamilton-Wentworth DSB

Incorporating technology in FSL classrooms can be beautiful and daunting. I will share my experience in transitioning to a 1:1 school with strategies, tasks, apps, management and

problem-solving, addressing both 1:1 and shared devices. Come, let's talk about where you are and where you can go.

C4 – L’histoire de bord Grades 7-12, Extended French and French Immersion Line Roberge, Rainbow DSB Que veut dire « le bord » pour vous? Dans cet atelier nous allons explorer la narration collective d'être sur le bord, les intersections et les marges. Les participants expérimenteront avec des modes multidisciplinaires, dont l'art dramatique, la danse, la poésie, et l'écriture.

C5 – Partnering Up: Introducing the ESL-FSL Tandem Canada Platform All levels of FSL Susan Parks – Université Laval Would you like to find a partner class so your FSL students can interact with Francophone students their age? In this workshop, the principles of tandem language learning and the features of the platform are explained. Features include videoconferencing, chat, forum and wiki options. A secure environment; free; teachers can see their students’ work.

Entertainment for our Friday reception / Notre invitée spéciale pour le 5 à 7 Céleste Lévis, a Franco-Ontarian artist par excellence

Céleste a grandi à Timmins. Grande fan de karaté, elle consacre d'abord tout son temps et son énergie à ce premier amour. La musique fait son arrivée plus tard, suite à de graves problèmes de santé qui obligent la jeune fille à arrêter toute activité sportive. Ses parents lui achètent alors un piano. En plus de cet instrument, Céleste développe aussi ses talents à la guitare, à la guitare basse ainsi qu'à la composition.

Ayant pris goût au métier, Céleste désire monter sur scène plus que jamais. En 2013, la jeune Franco-ontarienne participe à Ontario Pop (devenu aujourd'hui Rond Point), une formation d'une semaine se clôturant par un spectacle, véritable tremplin pour la relève musicale francophone de l'Ontario. Céleste remporte la première place, ce qui lui permet d'accéder au concours Ma Première Place des Arts et d'arriver directement à la demi-finale du Festival International de la chanson de Granby. Elle repart d'ailleurs avec une bourse de 1000$ remise par la SOCAN.

En 2015, Céleste participe à La Voix (TVA). Grâce à son talent unique, elle se fait une place dans l'équipe d'Éric Lapointe et parvient à la demi-finale, ratant de peu la prochaine ronde. Peu après, elle choisit de mettre sur pause ses études à l’Université d’Ottawa, afin de poursuivre son plus grand objectif : percer l'industrie de la musique et faire entendre son art.

Maintenant installée à Montréal, Céleste fait partie de l'équipe de Tandem avec qui elle a sorti son premier album, CÉLESTE, réalisé par David Laflèche, en 2015. Depuis, Céleste poursuit son ascension en accumulant les spectacles avec sa tournée à travers le Québec et l’Ontario. Autres jalons marquants pour l’auteure-compositrice-interprète: assurer la première partie des spectacles de Francis Cabrel au Québec en 2016, une nomination au Gala de l’ADISQ pour album adulte-contemporain de l’année, sans compter 5 autres nominations au Gala Trille Or 2017.
