DR. SEAN KIM PRESENTS: BONUS “GREAT CITIES OF ASIA” PRESENTATION ON BOMBAY

WHAT MORE CAN WE SAY ABOUT HIM, EXCEPT THAT TIM WHITMER IS BACK! Charming audiences nightly in Kansas City's best jazz venues, Tim Whitmer carries on the tradition of Kansas City Jazz with his inventive treatment of standards and fanciful original compositions. Classically trained, Whitmer followed the siren's call of jazz after studying at the Conservatory of Music at the University of MissouriKansas City (UMKC) with George Salisbury, and has never stopped delighting legions of fans.

Tim’s program features a solo piano show that will surely make us tap our toes. Don’t miss him at 3:00 on Tuesday, April 7, in the Madison Living Room.

We’re in for a treat this month as Dr. Sean Kim returns with a special bonus lecture in the History of the Great Cities of Asia series! This surprise presentation was not originally part of the series, but Dr. Kim recently discovered an excellent book on the history of Bombay and realized the history of this fascinating city is too captivating not to share.

Bombay, India — or Mumbai, as it was renamed in 1996 — is the eighth most populous city in the world, with an estimated metropolitan area population of 20.7 million as recorded in the 2011 Census of India. In India, only Delhi is larger, but Bombay is the wealthiest city in India and serves as the country’s financial, commercial and entertainment capital. It also boasts a position as one of the top 10 commerce centers in the world.

The seven islands that became Bombay were home to fishing communities which eventually were ceded to the British East India Company as part of the dowry King Charles II received when marrying the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Bombay saw much growth in infrastructure plus economic and educational development, which set the stage for this industrious city to become the global financial and cultural hub it is today. Dr. Kim is a renowned professor of history with an emphasis on Asian studies, currently at University of Central Missouri. He has a knack for blending historic fact with storytelling in a way that engages his audience and brings them into that moment in time. He was born in Seoul, South Korea, to parents who emigrated from North Korea when the American army was pulling out of the war. Raised in Independence, Missouri, after a brief stay in New York, Dr. Kim returned here in 2005 after earning his Ph.D. at Harvard in 2004 and completing post-doctoral work at the Peabody Institute.

Don’t miss this bonus lecture on Bombay at 1:30 on Friday, April 24, in the Westport Room!

I recently attended the annual Abundant Living Conference, which explores and celebrates aging as a journey that engages body, mind and spirit. The keynote speaker was Barbara Crafton, author of The Courage to Grow Old, in which she reflects on what she calls “The O Word.” Here’s a taste:

I’m not old! a beautiful woman at a party tells us all defiantly. By that she means that she is not any of the negative things we think old people are: useless, weak, unlovely, alone. But she is old — she’s eighty-one. Why does she accept that a stereotype — one which clearly does not fit her — is the only way there is of being old? Why should anyone? And why, in accepting such stereotypes, should she deny herself the honor of being esteemed for what she is: beautiful, experienced and wise? Why should she let the negative categories of aging be the only categories that count?

Why, indeed? Wherever we are in our aging, we are the work of the Potter’s hand, and that is something to celebrate.

You are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you (Is. 43:4)

— Chaplain Kathy Hall

ATTENTION GARDENERS — RESERVE YOUR RAISED GARDEN BEDS NOW!

Four garden boxes for residents are located north of the Madison Building. Subject to availability, you may reserve a whole box which measures about 8x6 feet, or just the north or south half of a box (4x6 feet). Currently available is all of Box 1 (closest to the door nearest Jefferson Street), the south half of Box 2 and the south half of Box 3. During the growing season the boxes receive about one inch of sprinkler water each week. A water faucet is located near the door on the east side.

To reserve a box or half a box, contact Bill Buckner at (816) 561-2402. Bill will use some of Box 4 for his tomatoes and the rest for herbs which the kitchen and residents may use. In the north half of Box 3, Bill will plant milkweed for butterflies and hummingbirds.

Father Bob Hagan, from Guardian Angels Parish, will celebrate Mass for our Roman Catholic residents on Wednesday, April 1, at 9:30 a.m. in The Chapel of the Epiphany. Mass will be followed by the Rosary. The Reverend Megan Castellan, Associate Rector and Chaplain at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, will be celebrant and preacher at The Chapel of the Epiphany on Sunday, April 12, at 10:00 a.m.

DOUGLAS NIEDT GUITAR RECITAL

We will be treated to a beautiful classical guitar recital given by Douglas Niedt, who began his studies with his father at age seven and made his concert debut in St. Louis when he was 16. He later polished his playing to gem-like brilliance through studies at The Juilliard School, the Segovia Master Classes in Spain and with famed guitarists Christopher Parkening, Narciso Yepes and Jorge Morel. He made his New York debut at age 21 in Carnegie Recital Hall. Recognized for his excellence in teaching, Niedt presents master classes across the country and has taught at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance for 38 years. Come listen to Douglas at 3:00 on Monday, April 13, in The Chapel of the Epiphany.

This day we observe National Tartan Day — a national U.S. celebration of Scottish heritage. The holiday was made official on April 6, 1998, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which asserted Scotland’s sovereignty over English territorial claims. Resident Vern Estes will be our guide through Scotland, sharing fascinating stories and educating us on Scottish history. Join us for this fun celebration of

Scotland’s culture and heritage at 2:00 on Monday, April 6, in the Jefferson Living Room.

NATIONAL TARTAN DAY CELEBRATION HOSTED BY VERN ESTES

A BUS TRIP TO BIRD’S BOTANICALS FOR AN INCREDIBLE TOUR OF ORCHIDS

Bird’s Botanicals started as a home-based greenhouse business with 400 square feet of growing space. David Bird continues to make his much-loved annual trips to Hawaii working with growers on new and improved orchids. Now located in a climate-controlled cave, the orchids have the perfect growing environment. With more than 10,000 orchids thriving and blooming, it’s quite a site to behold.

David has been growing orchids since 1978, receiving his horticulture degree from North Dakota State University. Prior to opening his business, he started an orchid exhibit when he worked with Powell Gardens, which has become an annual event.

Come hear his presentation on Tuesday, April 21, at Bird’s Botanicals on 23rd Street. The BSP bus will depart at 1:30. Please be sure to sign up with the concierge in the Madison or Jefferson lobbies and enjoy some BSP camaraderie!

Jan Schall is the Sanders Sosland Curator of Modern Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. She holds a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.A. in art history from Washington University in St. Louis. A former professor of art history at the University of Florida, she was named Fine Arts Council Teacher of the Year in 1991 and received a university T.I.P. Teaching Excellence Award in 1994. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Jan will bring the exhibit “WWI and the Rise of Modernism” for us to view at BSP. In commemoration of the World War I Centennial, this exhibition explores the impact of the Great War on the art and artists of that tumultuous era. Ms. Schall will show us how the War pushed artists to create a new theory of

NELSON-ATKINS CURATOR BRINGS IMPORTANT EXHIBIT TO BSP

AFTERNOON IN PARIS WITH THE BAND “MADE IN FRANCE”

This wonderful band is a group of French musicians playing the French music you love, composed of two local French citizens Alain (guitar/vocal) and Franck (guitar/vocal), and Eric (vocal) from Belgium, living in the Kansas City area. Their mix of lighter French pop tunes will give you a taste of different popular genres spanning the decades of soft and relaxing music.

They’re bringing their festive performance style to BSP at 3:00 on Friday, April 17, in the Madison Living Room.

BOW & STRINGS TO PERFORM AT BSP Michael O’Shiver (“Michael O”) and Victor Penniman will bring their musicianship to us, featuring styles from the baroque to jazz to pop themes of today through the glorious strings of the harp and the vibrant bass and cello sounds of the ruby gamba.

Penniman is the founder of a publication and production company for musicians, supporting original works as well as new interpretations of traditional compositions. Meanwhile, O’Shiver plays no ordinary harp, but blends his KC jazz roots with 15 years of musical experience in the Caribbean. Let’s give them a warm welcome at 3:00 on Wednesday, April 29, in the Madison Living Room.

We're excited to announce the new "Your Health, Your Way" program at BSP! We know exercise is key to staying strong and independent, so we're offering a customized fitness program to help you do just that.

If you’re looking for extra help with exercises, want to start walking more, work on your balance, or simply maintain independence for as long as possible, this is the program for you. Following an evaluation by a physical therapist from

our on-site Select Rehab team (which will be covered by Medicare Part B and your supplemental insurance), you will receive a customized training plan designed to help you reach the goals you set forth. You will then receive up to three 30-minute training sessions per week for just $240/month! Your health and independence are important to us, and we’re eager to get started. If you would like to set up your personal assessment, please contact Chrissie Diehl at (816) 595-5880.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS AND MILESTONES

GARDEN TIME

Last year, members of the Garden Committee enjoyed shopping for plants for the Memorial Garden at Soil Service Garden Center. This year, the committee will use its April meeting to browse among all the blooming plants to choose what to buy. A limited number of other residents are welcome to join us to buy for themselves: the date is Monday, April 27, at 10:00 a.m. If you want to go on this fun excursion, please call Barbara Lee at (816) 931-0211.

P.S. Sorry about the snowdrops, but forsythias are in bloom now and lilacs are coming on. — Article written by Barbara Lee

This is a reminder for all residents to sign up for our community outings, as this assists us in running our transportation more seamlessly. We appreciate how prompt everyone is with their personal appointment reservations, but we’d like to improve on our outing sign ups. And remember, the more that

sign up, the better! Simply call or see a Madison or Jefferson concierge to sign up for each BSP outing.

BEAUTIFY OUR COMMUNITY WITH FLOWER BOXES Think Spring! Plan now for balcony gardens. Bill Buckner has information on installing flower boxes for those who would like that option. Flower boxes are brick-colored plastic, with a water reservoir in their bottom and overflow out the lower sides. They come in two sizes: 2-feet and 3-feet long (both are 6-inches wide and 7-inches deep). The flower box holder is adjustable so it handles both the 2-foot and 3-foot long boxes. Both items are available at Home Depot, with total material costs around $21 for the 2-foot box and holder, and $26 for the 3-foot box and holder. The box holder does not attach to the round upper railing on our balconies, but attaches to the flat rail just below the round rail, with just a few minutes worth of work. The flowers in the accompanying picture appear to be red geraniums or begonias plus trailing white bacopa. These and many other appropriate flowers will be available at the Ace hardware store in Westport this Spring. Bill offers to pick up, modify and install flower boxes for the first person who contacts him at (816) 561-2402. Let’s beautify our campus and homes!
