Dr. Sean Kim returns for another in The History of the Great Cities of Asia series. The History of Singapore will be the sixth in Sean’s series. Singapore is a city rich in history dating back to the first settlements made there in the second century CE, while modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles as a trading post of the East India Company. Singapore is one of the world's leading commercial hubs, with the fourth-biggest financial center and one of the five busiest ports. Its globalized and diversified economy depends heavily on trade, especially in manufacturing and it also has the third highest per capita income in the world. It ranks high worldwide for education, healthcare, government transparency and economic competitiveness. Harvard educated, Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Central Missouri University, and a very active member of Saint Andrew’s. KANSAS CITY JAZZ WITH THE DOUG TALLEY QUARTET

Kansas City Jazz of the late 1920's through 1940's was primarily dance music derived from the blues, featuring outstanding Kansas City jazz musicians such as Count Basie, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Buck Clayton, Mary Lou Williams and Jay McShann. Kansas City Jazz was characterized by a driving, yet relaxed beat that was seemingly unaffected by jazz development in Chicago and New York. Formed in 1995, the Doug Talley Quartet has performed at numerous festivals, concerts, clubs, and schools throughout the Midwest. All four members of the quartet — Wayne Hawkins (piano),

Tim Brewer (bass), Doug Talley (saxophones), Keith Kavanaugh (drums/cymbals) — compose and arrange music, as well as contribute to the group's repertoire for recordings and live appearances. The Doug Talley Quartet performs and records a brand of present-day Kansas City Jazz that we hope you find refreshing, stimulating and addictive! They will perform at 3:00 on Sunday,

February 16, in the Madison Living Room — you won’t want to miss it!

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER


February is the month of love, and since God’s love is my favorite topic, I decided to talk about love this month. (I seem to be repeating myself). The truth is that the only way we know how to love is by the love we have been given by others. As much as we all want to give and receive love, the truth is that if we have never experienced the total acceptance that true love brings, it is difficult for us to love either God or others. If you grew up in a loving home where unconditional love was abundant, you understand the warmth and joy that this kind of love encourages. But what about those who have never known this family type of love? I believe that those who have received all-enfolding love have a particular responsibility to share that with others. For even if a person has not experienced the gift of unconditional maternal or paternal love, he or she can still absorb this gift from others. Therefore, acceptance and understanding and forgiveness are all necessary attributes of our behavior in the world. I truly trust that when each person experiences open-armed acceptance, this world will be a place of peace. Each of us has the responsibility to share God’s love with one another. And no time is better than this month of love. Putting pettiness and selfishness and self-righteousness aside, let us love one another with God’s all-encompassing love. Let us pause before we criticize or gossip or judge one another, for love puts all these emotions aside. And if we have forgotten just what that love is, let us read one more time, Paul’s great description from First Corinthians, Chapter 13, beginning at verse four:

“4Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant

5or rude. It does not insist on its

own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.

7It

bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for

knowledge, it will come to an end.9For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part;

10but when

the complete comes, the partial will come to an end.11

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought

like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways.12

For now we

see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully,

even as I have been fully known.13

And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of

these is love.”

May we seek to love one another with this kind of love.

ARMCHAIR CHORDERBACKS TO APPEAR FOR SPECIAL VALENTINE’S PERFORMANCE

A special treat awaits at this month’s Valentine’s Day dinner! The Armchair Chorderbacks — a barbershop quartet — will provide a serenade

during dinner on Friday, February 14, in the Canterbury Dining Room.

The group is a part of the Heart of America Barbershop Chorus and holds the 2013 Central State District Senior Quartet Championship.

Charming audiences nightly in Kansas City's best jazz venues, Tim Whitmer carries on/expands the tradition of Kansas City Jazz with his inventive treatment of standards and fanciful original compositions. Classically trained, Whitmer followed the siren's call of jazz after studying at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) with George Salisbury, a brilliant harmonically advanced pianist, who studied with Mary Lou Williams.

Since then, Whitmer has led a series of renowned bands, drawn from local jazz legends and talented young players. Whitmer brings together these

elements and abiding respect for the tradition, enhanced by his distinctive compositions magnificently rendered by a group of talented and experienced musicians for “Kansas City Standard Time”.
