You will ind a series of blogs by Kaie Kiss – Director, Performance Analyics, including her most recent aricle “Is There a Trade-Of between Customizaion and Scalability in Performance Producion?” that you can read below.
Kiss will be a featured panelist on the Data Quality in Fixed Income Atribuion Panel, scheduled for Friday, March 11th from 12:05 PM to 12:50 PM.
The Trade-Off Between Customization and Scalability in Performance Production
One thing is for sure, when it comes to scalability, less is always more. Doing less, but doing it right is what really improves the scale of your business.
In the world of performance analyics, scalability isn’t just about improving the speed of calculaion, it also means ensuring the accuracy and availability of results and their subsequent consumpion, the ability to handle large volumes, and last but not least, it is about synergy with the business growth strategy.
However, although speed, volume and imely delivery are important, data integraion and data accuracy of the end-results are criical to achieve scale because redundant and ime-consuming data correcions are one of the main factors afecing scalability.
Too oten analysts are forced to spend an inordinate amount of ime with manual excepions, where the correcions result in reprocessing the data and staring the process from the beginning again. Some teams have dealt with this by building custom processes within their performance applicaion which oten results in slowdowns and botlenecks.
The need for process customizaion is introduced by the lack of upstream processes and the subsequent need for accuracy and consistency. However, there are consequences when a number of customizaions are added to address operaional ineiciencies.
In my experience, customized processes are not meant to be part of the performance producion process as it will undoubtedly afect the speed and availability of the inal results.
This, however, does not mean that customizaion is out of reach, or that there has to be a trade-of with scalability.
With this approach, the impact on scalability is minimized and the processes relect the business needs so the performance producion is free from any redundant or cumbersome operaions that are not needed and create slowdowns.
Performance analysts ulimately spend less ime manually ensuring that the data and returns are validated thoroughly and can focus on providing more value-add, analyzing the numbers and delivering much needed insight into the investment process.
