Srr4L.rh |tl, futole4, 1994

On behalf of your Board of Management, I present toyou the Annual Report of the CastellorizianAssociation of Victoria for the 1993-1994.

Your present Board, over the past2 years, have workeddiligently and prudently in conducting the affairs ofyour Society.

REBUITDING - Stage 1 of our re-building has beencompleted and all costs have been met from existingfunds. No borrowing was necessary. Thanks must go toour Sub-committee and in particular to MichaelSpartels; without his building knowledge andexpertise, the cost of re-building would have been fargreater.

THE BOARD - I express many thanks to the Board fortheir hard work and attendance at Board Meetings. AsI repeat in all Reports, all Board Members arevolunteers. I hope that we will see more membersioining the Board for the 199L1996 term.

CASTELLORIZIAN OF THE YEAR-Thankyou also toour Sub-committee for their work over the past 2 yearsin selecting the Castellorizian of the Year. Memberswho have served on the Sub-committee were NickAdgemis, John B. Salvaris O.A.M., |asmine Verginis,Florence Livery, Sandra Varvodic, Dr Spiro Moraitis,Dr George Stabelos, Dr Michael Piperoglou, CynthiaKoutsoukis and ]ack Bisas O.A.M. Specjal thanks toSandra Varvodic for her Secretarial skills. 1992-L994has ben a period of many achievements for our society. The introduction of the prestigious Awards"Castellorizian of the Year", has by far been the mostsuccessful initiative introduced by your society. Itsacceptance by recipients Senator Nick Bolkus andMichael G. Kailis has been most gratifying. At arecent Sub-committee meeting, the criteria for selectionof future Castellorizians of the Year has been clarifiedas follows:

The Castellorizian of the year is awarded to a personof Castellorizian descent whose achievements havebeen an inspiration to the Castellorizian communitiesof Australia. Their achievements can be in the state, national or international arena or areas such as social, community or cultural development, research oreconomic developnrent. Categories can be interpretedbroadly, and the nomination should relate to workaccomplished over the culmination of many years orduring the preceding L2 months.

V.C.E. AWARDS -Thepresentation to V.C.E. studentsin 1994 was also favourably received by parents andmembers. I hope that these Presentations, togetherwith the Castellorizian of the Year, will becomeannual events.

TOth ANN/YERSARY CELEBRAT/ONS IN 1.995 -Next year we celebrate the 70th year of our foundationand we hope that members will support all ourfunctions and activities during our 70th Year. Let us

pause and give a thought to those Pioneers who hadthe foresight and strength to band together in a strangecountry to form abrotherhood.

SEN/OR CITIZENS - The most gratifying initiativethat your Board has introduced in 1994has, of course, been the monthly meetings of our senior citizens. Underthe guidance of Nick Patiniotis, Steve Zombos, fack N.Miriklis, Katina Miriklis and Sylvia Coates, the Clubcontinues to increase in the numbers attending. We wishthe Sub-committee every success, and assure them thatthey have the full unequivocal support and gratitudeof the Board of Management.

BUILDING - Our Building is occupied by an excellenttenant who has, since his occupancy, paid his rentalrates and taxes without delay. Our tenant is on amonthly tenancy. However, the maintenance of thebuilding is now causing concern. The roof of theBuilding has deteriorated to such an extent wheretotal replacement is necessary. Over the past 10 years/approximately $L7,000 has been spent on repairs. Asour building is currently listed under the "HistoricBuilding Register" which describes the building as an"A Grade listed building in South Melbourne withhistoric, aesthetic and social value". All attempts tohave the slate roof replaced with other materials byappeal to Council have failed. Further, appeal toCouncil for financial assistance in the form a lowinterest loan is still pending. The cost of replacement is$50,000. We will keep members informed as to theprogress of the problem.

HONOUR BOARD - This year will see the placementof the long-overdue Honour Board for Ex-servicemen inour Club Rooms. All other Boards will also be boughtup to date and returned to the Club Rooms. I thank theSub-committee for their final list and report. Thankyou Michael Kyriakos, |ohn Trellis, Alick jackomosO.A.M. Their full report will be printed in our nextnewsletter.

CLUB ROOMS - As soon as funds become available, wewill proceed with stage 2 and up-grading the kitchen, the covering etc. of our courtyard and installation ofTelevision and Video facilities. I remind that our ClubRooms are available for hire to members, and membersonly.

NEI4/SIETTER - Our Newsletter continues to beaccepted by members. We thank all those membenswho took time to write to us with news items, stories, profiles etc. However, the most disappointing aspect isthose members who do not notify us of a change ofaddress, when this happens their names areautomatically dropped off the mailing list. Theintroduction of a Greek Section edited by Mr. SteveZombos, our Vice President, has also been well receivedbymembers.

IN CONCTUSION - Thanks to all those members whohave supported us. To those members of the Board whoare not seeking re-electioq thank you and good luck.

JACKBTSAS O.A.M.PRESIDENT
