Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.

About Today’s ServiceIn today’s service we are going to take some time to consider why we do what we do in public worship and thank God for the blessings that he brings us through it. Before each major section of the liturgy, Vicar will offer some explanation. Public worship has traditionally been referred to as the “Divine Service.” Service is a great way to describe what happens in worship, because:

1) God serves us by forgiving our sins, strengthening our faith through his Word, and giving us a desire to respond to his love for us.

2) We serve God with joyful hearts for what he has done for us with our thanks and praise.

3) We serve each other by being here, proclaiming God’s truth, and praying for each other.

us, and praising his name. This basic order has been the foundation of worship for centuries in the Christian Church.

EXPLANATION OF LITURGY 1 Vicar

INVOCATION

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS AND ABSOLUTIONP: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our

sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord:

EXPLANATION OF LITURGY 2 Vicar

THE WORD OF GODTHE FIRST LESSON Genesis 12:1-9Just as Abram was blessed by God and called on the name of the Lord, God has greatly blessed us and so we to worship him with gladness.

Page 5: Web viewOur worship follows an order (liturgy) that centers our attention on listening to God’s Word,

1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.9 Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.

VERSE OF THE DAY Psalm 103:1

P: Alleluia. Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Alleluia.

THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 12:1-3 Because of God’s great mercy and love for us, our worship is not confined to Sunday mornings. Rather we live our lives as living sacrifices – worshiping God in all we do.

1Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

THE NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. (continued next page)

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY Come, Rejoice Before Your Maker | 228

THE SERMON TEXT Psalm 841 How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty!2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord;my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young—a place near your altar,

Lord Almighty, my King and my God.4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.7 They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.8 Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty; listen to me, God of Jacob.9 Look on our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one.10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere;I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor;no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.12 Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.
