Congratulations to Kraig and Emily Pool on the birth of a daughter. She was born May 23, 2019, weighed in at 7 lbs., 3 oz., was 20” long and has been named Katherine Diane.

We offer our sympathy and our prayers to Vivian Lynn and her family on the loss of her husband, Wesley. At the time of printing, no definite plans had been made regarding a memorial service. We also offer our sympathy and our prayers to Roxanne Moriston and her family on the loss of her mother, Mavis Richard. Her funeral service was held May 23 at the Lake Park UMC.

Dear Church Family, Thank you all for your prayers, cards and concern since Wesley’s illness and death. It has been such a wonderful example of Christian love and support. Vivian Lynn

Dear Church family, I hope and pray that as you read the following lines, God will encourage you and

uplift your spirit. School is over and we’re all up to summer sport and activities as well as vacation.

Summer is a time to take a break. It’s also an opportunity for us all to re-focus. In an article I published last year, I talked about how to focus (or re-focus). You can read it in its entirety at https://emmanuelnaweji.com/stay-focused/. There are three things I would encourage you to do this summer:

• Recenter on Jesus Christ. • Redefine your priorities. • Rethink who should walk with you.

That’s exactly what I will be doing during my renewal leave, June 17 through July 17. What that means is you won’t see me in Church for four weeks. On this leave, I would like to re-focus. As stated above, I will recenter on Jesus Christ through prayer, scripture searching, and personal reflection. I will also redefine my priorities and rethink my relationships.

Perhaps as you go camping or on vacation this summer, you could choose to incorporate some time of prayer and Bible study with your family and friends, if you don’t normally do it. In case you won’t go on vacation or camping, why don’t you spend time in prayer and reflection at church on Saturdays (Lake Park UMC, 5 pm to 6 pm)?

Here’s a little bit about the renewal leave I mentioned earlier as my way to re-focus this year. According to the 2016 Book of Discipline (the governing book for the United Methodist Church), and in paragraph 350.2, the United Methodist Church encourages pastors to take a week for continuing education and growth leave every year. The Church also encourages pastors to take a full month of leave for renewal and personal growth every four years.

I have taken some time off for continuing education, but not a full month of leave, which I’m taking this month. And, you should know that I have been in ministry since 2008, and have never been on a renewal leave. So, I am really overdue for that. Charge conference approved it last year and it’s time for me to do it. Our lay servants will be preaching when I am gone, and I have pastors to help with emergencies. If you need anything, please, call the office.

Just before my renewal leave, on Sunday, June 16, together with our lay delegate to the annual conference, I will lead a conversation during worship (both in Harris and Lake Park). We will give an update on the Iowa Annual Conference and address any questions you may have for us. Annual Conference this year happens Friday, June 7 through Tuesday, June 11, in Des Moines. There is an extra day this year, and that is because we will also be electing delegates to the 2020 General Conference. Keep praying for the United Methodist Church.

See you in worship on June 16,

Pastor Emmanuel.

June is often a month of citywide garage sales. These ‘local retail outlets’ have a variety of finds where one person’s odds and ends are another person’s treasures. What book gems can you find in the following odds and ends?

Deb Morrow, Church Librarian What do faith, family, ducks, and money have in common? The well-known stars of A&E’s hit show Duck Dynasty, Korie and Willie Robertson from Louisiana, tell about their days of eating fried bologna sandwiches in their book, The Duck Commander Family. Illness is as much a part of family as is death. Once Upon a Hopeful Night by Risa Sacks Yaffe is written for children age 5-11 who have a parent with cancer. In the gentleness of the changing seasons, Leo Buscaglia, tells the simple story about a special leaf in The Fall of Freddie the Leaf: A Story of Life for All Ages. This inspiring allegory illustrates the delicate balance between life and death. Parenting is the most important responsibility one can choose as an adult. Chicken Soup for the Parent’s Soul: Stories of Loving, Learning and Parentlng edited by Jack Canfield et al offers contributions from single parents, stepparents, foster parents, adoptive parents and every type of parent in-between. These stories will speak to your heart as they help put the difficult times into perspective, renew your faith in yourself as a parent and remind you to cherish the moments. So your parenting has taken you up to age twelve. What’s next? Find support in the book Nurturing Your Teenager’s Soul: A Practical Approach to Raising a Kind, Honorable, Compassionate Teen by Mimi Doe. It was !967 when Joni Eareckson executed a dive into the water that changed her life forever. Now as a quadriplegic she fought her demons and embraced a lifestyle that eventually surrounded her with God’s immeasurable grace. Joni: An Unforgettable Story 25th Anniversary chronicles her journey of defeat and triumph. Together Ken Tada and Joni Eareckson Tada tell their heartfelt continuing story of struggles and love with their thirty-plus marriage in Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story.
