The poem speaks about a man who sings to his lover and how his lover will always remember him for his serenades.

The Mass in b minor is johann Sebastian Bach's only complete setting of the Latin Ordinary mass, and it was not completed until the year before his death (though the Crucifixus movement itself was originally composed in 1714). Bach was extremely cognizant of structure and symmetry in his compositions, so it is significant that the Crucifixus is the central movement of the middle section of the mass (the “Credo”). The text of the movement comes from the Nicene Creed, the roman Catholic profes-sion of faith: “He was crucified for us under pontius pilate, died, and was buried.” The movement features a passacaglia (a repeating bass line in triple meter) that occurs 13 times during the piece. above the passacaglia, the voices sing in tense chromatic harmonies that evoke the pain of the crucifixion story.

Earth Song was written and composed in 2007 by frank Ticheli as a response toward the ongoing war overseas. The lyrics at the beginning of the piece ask all listeners to "see," "live" and "be." in the body of this text, he dictates how war has damaged the Earth and the people in turn. The latter half of Ticheli's work brings a way for us to live through the pain using music as our sanctu-ary and again beckons us to "see," "live" and "be" now within the music.

Phillip Sparke's Fanfare for Saint Cecilia was commissioned for the 150th anniver-sary of Harmonieverein Cäcilia in 2008 and performed later that year. The performance took place on Three Countries day, which celebrates the closeness of germany, Holland and Belgium. Saint Cecilia is the patroness of music in the Orthodox Church. The piece opens and closes with a majestic brass theme, contrasted by a lyrical central section and the use of percussion (mainly the timpani) signals these changes.

Steve Hodges is an american composer who has been teaching in the public school sys-tem for 38 years. He has written over 100 concert band pieces that have been pub-lished by alfred music. Fiero is a dynamic Latin-style piece that is sure to fire up the crowd. The expanded parts and aggressive rhythms highlight a soaring, Spanish-style melody.

Fire Dance, written by douglas Akey, is an exhilarating piece of music that younger students have a blast playing. it tells the story of a tribal group performing their ritual around the fire. The main melody stated in the beginning is developed and expanded in the band throughout the piece. The piece has very active percussion parts that drive the ensemble to the conclusion of the dance.

Firedance is a song written in 1994 by Bill Whelan as part of his score for the musical Riverdance. The piece elucidates the beauty of Celtic music while utiliz-ing a fiery Spanish feel. The passionate nature of the dance is captured in a mixed meter, which for the most part, relies on 7/8 and 6/8 time signatures. Whelan has enjoyed tremendous success as a composer. The Riverdance album is credited with pioneering irish music onto the popular world market. Whelan toured ireland with Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as key-board player and later as musical director. He also produced U2's "The refugee" from their album War.

Go Not Far from Me, O God is a classical period motet composed by Niccolo Antonio zingarelli, written as a part of a larger sacred work, Christus e Miserere. Zingarelli composed this unaccompanied choral piece in 1826 for the students of the Naples Conservatory. Zingarelli’s composition is a staple in both liturgical and education rep-ertoire. it is marked by its two contrasting sections, the first a solemn pray for divine providence, and the latter section a jubilant expression of joyful praise.

Golliwogg's Cakewalk is the last of the six movements in Claude debussy’s piano classic, Children’s Corner, written between 1906 and 1908, and was inspired by the golliwog, cakewalk, and richard Wagner’s music. a golliwog is a type of rag doll that was immensely popular in Europe and australia, often associated with minstrel shows. Cakewalk music is a derivative of ragtime, with origins in the late 19th century on slave plantations in the southern U.S. Wagnerian opera had a lasting impact on debussy’s work, as evidenced by the opening bars of Wagner’s prelude to Tristan und Isolde, which are mimicked in this cakewalk. The piece was published by Brian Lewis in 2004 for beginning band and has become a standard piece for teaching syncopation and ragtime music to young students.

Composer dan forrest was inspired to write Good Night Dear Heart as an elegy to a four-month old-Ethiopian girl named Etsegenet. She was to have been adopted by his brother and sister-in-law but became ill and passed away before the adoption was complete. in researching various texts, forrest found this excerpt on the grave-marker of Suzy Clemens, daughter of Samuel Clemens, who we know as the iconic author mark Twain. Clemens’ daugh-ter was 26 when she passed, and Twain had found this verse as the final stanza of the poem “annette” by an otherwise unknown australian poet named robert richardson. The setting of this text is neither mournful nor lamenting, but rather a gentle sup-plication to god through nature to impart warmth, kindness and mercy upon an innocent soul.

The Great Steamboat Race is a program-matic work that depicts the race from New Orleans to St. Louis between two historic steamboats, the Natchez and the robert E. Lee. The main motive of this piece comes from a popular american song called “Waiting for the robert. E Lee” by Lewis f. muir and L. Wolfe gilbert. Composer Robert W. Smith cleverly uses the percus-sion section to create the illusion of a river with two steamboats racing on it and uses references from “Waiting for the robert E. Lee” to announce the winner of the race, the robert E. Lee.

Honey Boys on Parade is a fun circus march full of different "scenes" written by italian-born Edward V. Cupero. This piece was originally written in 1914 as background music for george "Honey Boy" Evan's famous minstrel troupe, where Cupero was employed as music director. minstrel shows were a staple in late 19th century and early 20th century entertain-ment, where actors would paint their faces brown and/or black and act/sing/dance dif-ferent scenes. Here we observe a dynamic dialogue between the light, bouncy melody of the woodwinds and the powerful line of the low brass, all lead by a solo cornet.

arranged for string orchestra by gerald r. doan, How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place is the fourth movement of johannes Brahms’ German Requiem. it was com-posed in 1868 and was inspired by the death of Brahms' mother and composer robert Schumann. This beautiful arrange-ment combines the orchestral and choral lines into a strings-only ensemble.

dr. Eugene Butler is a renowned conductor, composer, educator and church musician. a graduate of Oklahoma University, he also holds a master’s degree in sacred music from Union Theological Seminary (New york) and a doctorate in composition from the University of missouri-Kansas City. I Will Extol Thee, God and King is one of Butler's over 700 published compositions from 47 different publishing houses. This setting of psalm 145 uses SaTB arrange-ment, range in dynamic contrast, and variances in tempo and meter. Butler sets the joyous and triumphant text in a style for which he has come to be known over the span of his active career.

I Will Not Leave You Comfortless was written by Everett Titcomb to explore the polyphonic style of renaissance music. This piece was selected for inclusion in the official program of the 1936 English Church music festival in London, where it was performed by 4,000 voices with Titcomb in attendance. it was the first time an american composer had been featured in the festival. The text is inspired by a biblical passage and is john’s recollection of what jesus of Nazareth said before his crucifixion as to assure his disciples that even though he was leaving them, god would never abandon them, and that his spirit will live on through the Holy ghost.

La-Van is a paso doble march dedicated to VanderCook College of music by its past president Richard E. Brittain. paso dobles are Spanish-style marches that emulate the bravado and drama of bullfights and this piece is no exception. as you listen to this piece, close your eyes and see the whirling and prancing of the bull and its fighter.

Loch Lomond is dave Black’s concert band arrangement of the traditional Scottish folk song. Black’s arrangement sets the tradi-tional melody in a luscious, lyrical style at the beginning, a march style in the middle, and a grandiose, dramatic fashion at the end. The original folk song is often the final piece of music played at a dance party or dinner in Scotland. Several theories exist about the origins of the original tune, many of which are tied to the jacobite Uprising of 1745, in which Charles Edward Stuart attempted to regain the British throne for the exiled House of Stuart. One interpre-tation of the lyrics is that the lover of a captured jacobite rebel set to be executed in London sang the song in mourning.

On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss was written in 1989 by david R. Holsinger. Holsinger translated the american Hymn "it is Well With my Soul," which tells the story of Horatio g. Spafford, who sent his wife and daughters to Europe ahead of him to join them later. However, on November 22, their ship was struck by an English vessel and sank; all Spafford daughters all perished. Sailing to reunite with his wife who sur-vived, Spafford wrote the hymn when he passed the spot where his daughters had drowned.

Rockbridge Festival is a fun piece writ-ten for yo ung bands by david Gorham. This work is comprised of two sections, a brisk march and a slow ballad. Rockbridge Festival was inspired by, and gets its name from, a two-day festival in Virginia celebrat-ing mountain music and dancing.

Russian Sailors' Dance is a romantic piece in programmatic style. it was written in 1927 after Reinhold Glière’s popular ballet of The Red Poppy. Russian Sailors’ Dance was inspired by a scene from The Red Poppy where the Captain comes out with his sailors and they dance themes and variations of love the Captain has for the dancer. The arrangement is very high in energy and depicts strong men dancing and attempting to do so intricately. as they gather themselves to coordinate this in a

mad rush to the end, the orchestra picks up in speed and intensity. The dance ends with a “desperate lunge, aided and abetted by a surging and enthusiastic rush in the orchestra.”

Gustav Holst began composing Second Suite in F in 1911, later published in 1922. The “Song Without Words” move-ment was written about the English folksong “i’ll Love my Love.” This folksong depicts the story of a young woman whose love was sent to sea by his parents in hope of ending the relationship. during his time away the woman becomes distraught to the point of bedlam. She was held in chains at the oldest psychiatric hospital St. mary Bethlehem Hospital of London. When the young man arrives on land he hears news of her being and heads to her bedside. in time, the couple becomes reunited and live out their days in happiness together. Throughout the piece you will hear Holst showing the mood and emotions of the woman telling the story of her love.

Set Me as a Seal Upon Your Heart is a choral piece based on the text of Song of Solomon 8:6-7: Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. / Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be condemned. This piece was written in dedication to the parents of the composer, david N. Childs and includes a solo for either trombone or french horn. The choir starts out singing in unison, then divides into four-part harmonies. These psalms are often recited at wedding ceremonies.

Georg Philipp Telemann was a leading german composer of the Baroque era. With much influence on j.S. Bach and joseph Haydn’s music, Telemann wrote music for all musicians to be able to perform. This arrangement of Telemann’s Sinfonia dem-onstrates the talent and ability to accom-

modate for young musicians. Chromatic harmonies to build tension and the rising and falling gesture of dynamics is what brings this piece to life.

Sing Me to Heaven was composed by daniel E. Gawthrop with text written by jane griner. according to gawthrop, the song was commissioned by music director Carol Hunter in 1991, who was in search of a piece “that spoke to the way that we as singers feel about music in our lives." after reading the text:“If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby. If you would win my heart, sing me a love song. If you would mourn me and bring me to God, Sing me a requiem, Sing me to heaven,” gawthrop said the music wrote itself. Tonight's per-formance is dedicated to jacob Bass, who loved singing in the VanderCook Concert Choir; to rosalind-denise rogers, mother of our own rosalind-denise, who made her earthly transition in august of 2014; and to all the others who have passed and for whom we are now singing.

Charles Carter is a well-known name in band literature. He composed Symphonic Overture in 1963, and was one of the first composers to write quality repertoire for younger students. He studied music at Ohio State University and the Eastman School of music, and taught at florida State University.

That Old Hound Dog Rag was composed by Randall d. Standridge in 2009. The playful nature of the song was inspired by Standridge’s two rambunctious dogs while they were out playing in his yard. The piece is written for a younger ensemble, and is a great way to introduce a young band to the ragtime style. Keep an ear out for the main melody, which is passed around from sec-tion to section throughout the song.

Composed in 1889, john Philip Sousa's The Thunderer was dedicated to Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knight Templay, of Washington, dC, composed on the occasion of the 24th Triennial Conclave of the grand Encampment. The Thunderer was in fact

mrs. Sousa's favorite march, which in turn made it one of her husband's favorites as well. The title may refer to one of the men charged with making arrangements for the 1889 conclave, in particular, myron m. parke, who worked tirelessly to prepare for the successful event.

Sergei Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé Suite is based on music originally composed for a film score, and is generally satirical in style and intent, echoing the mood and genre of the film. Troika is the fourth of five movements and originally accompanied a scene of a sleigh ride in the film. The word "troika," meaning “triplet or triumvirate,” comes from the russian driving harness used for a three-horse sleigh. Composed in 1933 and premiered in 1937, during what might be termed the dark ages of Stalin, Troika reflects a style of music from this period of sarcasm and multiple meaning: outward exuberance and inward protest.

Two Irish Sketches was composed by david Black. The first movement, "The Legend of Tully Castle," recounts the history of Tully Castle, built for Sir john Hume, who lived there until 1641. The castle was attacked during the Confederate War; the Humes surrendered on Christmas Eve, 1641, in exchange for the safe return of rory maguire. Ultimately, the maguires changed their minds and 16 men, 69 women and numerous children were mas-sacred on Christmas day. The second move-ment, "dance of the Leprechauns," lives up to its name. according to legend, faerie people used shoes made by leprechauns to dance the night away. On wearing them out, the faeries would return to the leprechauns for new shoes in which to dance again.

Victor López has worked as an educator/administrator with the miami-dade County public Schools System for 35 years. Viva España was chosen for its colorful and dramatic flair. imagine the drama, the glory, the excitement and energy of a Spanish bullfight. The driving forces of the piece are the percussion and tuba, while the trum-pets resemble the elaborate choreography of a matador.
