PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome to “Sweet Charity”, the second production of WVLOA’s 45th season.

We hope that you enjoy this delightful Neil Simon comedy with music by Cy Cole-man and lyrics by Dorothy Fields.

Our final production of this season in June/July will be a new musical of Neil Sedaka songs, “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do”. Set in a Catskills resort in the 1960’s, the score showcases 18 of Sedaka’s classics.

You’re Invited!!! Whether you are already one of our 1200+ subscribers or here in the Saratoga Civic Theatre for the very first time, we invite you to join us this Novem-ber for West Valley Light Opera’s 46th season. Because we realize the poor economy has affected the Silicon Valley lifestyles, we have chosen to keep our rates the same as last season. And we will maintain our policy of not charging any additional fees for tickets purchased through our Box Office and/or with a Credit Card.

Look at Our Centerfold!!! Included in this program is a special blue insert, which we invite you to use to subscribe to WVLOA’s 46th musical season. Subscribe NOW to ensure good seats and substantial savings over the cost of individual tickets. Current subscribers may also use this form to renew for next season.. All subscriptions and individual ticket orders will be processed according to the date on which they are received, but actual tickets will not be assigned or mailed until after this season’s last production has concluded in August.

Let me close by stating that you, the audience members who share your sup-port and enthusiasm for WVLO’s endeavors, make it a truly gratifying experience for all of us involved, both on the stage and behind the scenes. And we extend our special gratitude to those subscribers who have donated additional funds to ensure the excellent quality of sets and costumes that we strive to bring to this stage. We hope that you have a marvelous time at this musical and that you will join us for our future productions.

—Edward Hand, President West Valley Light Opera Association

A Note from the Director

Throughout time, finding someone to commit to, confide in, share moments together, and LOVE is something very rare. One may search and search, and still be alone without any results. Sometimes it just happens, and that is true love.

Charity, like so many others, has so much love to give, and finding the right one can be a lifelong challenge, but without taking that ‘risk’, one will never know.

If you have a loved one, congratulations, and enjoy every moment together as time passes quickly. If you have not yet found that special person, then join Charity on her journey in search of Mr. Right.

“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to love and be loved in return.” – Natalie Cole

I’m dedicating this show to Ciya (my Charity), my daughter and husband and Mickey, my son and his wife, and to Dominic, our first grandchild. Enjoy!

—Bill Starr

WALTER J. DUZMALNovember, 1927 – February, 2010

If you have been a subscriber for many years, you will remember Walt portraying the role of Tevya in the West Valley Light Opera’s 1990 production of “Fiddler On The Roof”. He made such an impression on our audiences, not only for his wonderful voice, but for his acting ability as well. He actually looked the part, too, and said many times, he had been given the opportunity to play the “part of a lifetime” in that production. Walt was active in theater all over the Bay Area, sang in his Church choir and was part of a traveling acting troupe which originated with Santa Clara Players years ago. He will truly be missed. We extend our deepest sympathy to Phyllis and her family

during this difficult time.

IN MEMORIAM

Congratulations Liz and Company

and cultural programs such as ours. Here in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to have many companies that have initiated such programs. Remember, matching contri-butions are not automatic. YOU must notify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If you are employed by one of these companies and are one of our supporters, take advantage of this wonderful way to support one of your favorite non-profit associations, WVLO. It isn’t too late to match your contribution for this season.

Whenever you donate to a non-profit group like WVLOA, you can double your contribution to the organization by taking advantage of your company’s matching gift program (even after retirement). Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributions is through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one of their employees gives to a favorite char-ity. And often, these companies will only match contributions made to develop arts

She has been involved in so many productions through her affiliation with WVLO during the past 22 years either as Producer, SM, ASM, stage crew, lighting crew or all-around assistant, her credits are just too numerous to mention. Her future goal is to make more money and dance more often. In her spare time she is a nanny to her adorable nephews and many others. She is also grateful to her friends and family for their love and support.
