02.12.21 “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” - Frederick Douglass Dear AHS Families, I heard it shared with me earlier this week that if you were younger than 13 on Tuesday, you’d have never seen as much snow as what was dumped on us in that 12-hr period. Since all 4 of our kids are younger than 13, you can imagine how magical it was! Kids of ALL ages ran wild throughout our neighborhood in happy hordes!! Oh, that we could bottle up, store, and reuse the positive energy that this type of happiness elicits in our children! It was truly something to behold. Upon returning indoors after hours of snowball fights, building forts, and sledding, our three boys were excited to warm up with some hot chocolate. Unfortunately, my son Andrew (5) got quite an attitude (not super surprising...) with Nana who was fixing the hot chocolate for the boys. Hearing this from the other room, I entered the kitchen to find Andrew’s mood grow increasingly “Hulk- like” and I promptly sent him to his room. Awhile later, I talked with him and let him out and he quickly asked me if he could have his hot chocolate, to which I responded, “No buddy, you were rude to Nana so you don’t get hot chocolate right now. Maybe if you’re attitude improves the rest of the day you can have some after dinner. I love you.” Another bright green, Hulk scowl appeared on his face and he responded, saying, “No you don’t. You never love me!” and stomped off in a fit. If this were my first encounter with this kind of attitude, I might feel badly for him or even wonder if he really thought that I didn’t love him. But having been in this situation a time or two (as I’m sure we all have!) I was reminded of this important truth: Sometimes, we just have to tell our kids “No.” And we have to remind ourselves that if the theme of our relationship with them is unconditional love, then regardless of their momentary affections (which are very real - sometimes brutally so!), we can be assured that they are well aware of this love, will benefit from the boundaries we set by it, and find comfort in it each day. Incidentally, 15 minutes later, I found and Andrew in the living room playing as if nothing had happened earlier and, walking by, I casually said, “Love you, buddy.” He quickly responded, “Love you, too, Dad.” Anderson Proud, Rob P.S. Dear AHS Families, I heard it shared with me earlier this week that if you were younger than 13 on Tuesday, you’d have never seen as much snow as what was dumped on us in that 12-hr period. Hearing this from the other room, I entered the kitchen to find Andrew’s mood grow increasingly “Hulk-like” and I promptly sent him to his room. But having been in this situation a time or two (as I’m sure we all have!) luck to those students entering the Science Day competition held through the University of Cincinnati. Special thanks to all those students who shared their work this year!

SENIOR SECTION:

Senior Cap and Gown: Please contact Graduate Services to place your Cap & Gown order ASAP! The deadline was Jan. 7th. At this point, a late fee will be applied to all orders. They are at 7022 Main Street in Newtown or you can reach them at www.graduateserdviceinc.com or 513-272-5890. Announcements will be distributed during lunch periods to students on April 6th. Distribution of cap/gown is April 29th, also during lunch periods.

Senior Baby Ads (Yearbook): Interested in purchasing an ad for the back of the yearbook this year? Click HERE for more information.

Diploma Name Information: You should have received a letter from the school indicating what our current records suggest in terms of how your son/daughter name will appear on his/her diploma. Please pay close attention to this and respond appropriately in the manner suggested in the letter. Questions? Email Vicki Beltramo ([email protected]).

PROM UPDATE: At this point, no formal decisions have been made regarding the fate of Prom 2021. As you might imagine, we would LOVE to be able to pull off a dance, perhaps even a senior-only experience, but anything we do would need to be approved by the Hamilton County Public Health department. Most recently, we have reached out to the HCPH Director to inquire about Prom and he reiterated that this would most definitely fall under the Governor’s category or a mass gathering and would, thus, be restricted. That said, we have NOT officially cancelled any plans because this order may change between now and May. In the meantime, we are working to determine what other end-of-year celebratory activities may occur in lieu of a formal Prom event. I have personally reached out to all Principals in the ECC to ask what their plans are and each of them are in the same position we are. As plans begin to be solidified, we will most definitely communicate to both students and parents. FHSD CLASS OF 2022-2023 EXPERIENCESHIP MEETING: As a part of the district’s strategic vision, FHSD has been growing our community partnerships to provide students with valuable learning experiences. Opportunities for students to participate with internship-type experiences began in the summer of 2019 with over 175 students participating in the first year. Now is the time to restart and encourage the opportunities ahead for our students through the Experienceship platform. Parents and students are encouraged to attend an upcoming informational meeting March 2nd at Turpin High School to learn more. The event will include an interactive business panel session followed by an open house to explore the various opportunities that will be available during the 2021-2022 school year. Please see the flyer at the link below to learn more and to reserve your spot. Space for the open house may be limited. Questions? Please contact Donna Lauver at [email protected] or Brian Robinson at [email protected]. March 2nd Experienceship/Internship Flyer AHS BRAND & LOGO TRANSITION UPDATE: The work of the AHS Brand & Logo Steering Committee continues to move forward as we enter into the fall months.
