The Irish started immigrating after the potato famine of 1845-1852. Over a million died on the Irish mainland, and almost a million left Ireland for the United States and London, decreasing the population of Ireland by almost 25 percent. Impoverished, most couldn’t afford to buy land, so they congregated in the northeastern cities. Prop- (potato)

Spread of Catholicism- by 1860, there were 3.1 million members of the Catholic Church- St. Patrick's Day

Urban expansion- impoverished Irish often had to live in run-down slums and houses that were falling apart in the cheap cities.

Rows and riots- tensions between Nativists and Irishmen were pretty bad

In the decade between 1845 and 1855, over one million Germans fled economic hardship and a revolution. Unlike the Irish, most Germans came with enough money to journey to the Midwest to own farmland and work. Most Germans moved to New York City, Baltimore, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Milwaukee.

Farms erupted in the Midwest- the most common ancestry in the United States currently is of German decent

In 1848, news of gold in California reached mainland China, and civil war and famine propelled them on to the United States. In steamships they arrived in San Francisco, where the first Chinatowns were formed

Opium was introduced to the United States

Worked agricultural jobs and also served on railroad construction crews.

Chinatowns sprung up as immigrants attempted to keep a semblance of their normal communities and cultures around

Nativism and it’s Effects

Nativism-the policy of protecting the interests of native-born or established inhabitants against those of immigrants. But where did it come from?In the U.S., Nativism emerged as early as the 17th century, but grew more and more powerful as it seemed that Irish Catholics and Germans were stealing jobs and destroying the culture and values of the United States.

It furthered with the influx of Chinese immigrants who were thought of as less than human and dirty, worse than scum

Discussion

Passed in 1880 by Chester Arthur, it was pretty darn bad. Chinese were not allowed to enter the United States, and even current citizens of the U.S. had a chance of being deported. Unless they could prove that they were in the country for something other than labor, they were sent back to China
