THE ORDER OF MATINS TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

OCTOBER 10, 2021 –8:00 AM A warm welcome to all worshiping with Resurrection Lutheran Church today. We celebrate our Savior’s love in the faithful gathering of God’s people, whether we are together in God’s house or, as you watch online from the comfort of your home.

For those individuals or families desiring a space that is physically distanced, please feel welcome to sit in the rows that are marked as reserved.

LESSONS AND LITURGY TODAY Today, we are called upon to “seek good, and not evil, that you may live.” The good we are to seek is not good works, but God. Jesus said, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” We seek good when we forgive one another and pray together; when we come and follow Jesus.

❖ Denotes times when the congregation is invited to stand.

The congregation is encouraged to quietly and prayerfully prepare for worship during the prelude.

Thee Will I Love, My Strength, My Tower LSB 694 1. Thee will I love, my strength, my tower; Thee will I love, my hope, my joy. Thee will I love with all my power, With ardor time shall ne’er destroy. Thee will I love, O Light divine, So long as life is mine.

2. Thee will I love, my life, my Savior, Who art my best and truest friend. Thee will I love and praise forever, For never shall Thy kindness end. Thee will I love with all my heart—Thou my Redeemer art! 3. I thank Thee, Jesus, Sun from heaven, Whose radiance hath brought light to me; I thank Thee, who hast richly given All that could make me glad and free; I thank Thee that my soul is healed By what Thy lips revealed. 4. O keep me watchful, then, and humble; Permit me nevermore to stray. Uphold me when my feet would stumble, And keep me on the narrow way. Fill all my nature with Thy light, O Radiance strong and bright! 5. Thee will I love, my crown of gladness; Thee will I love, my God and Lord, Amid the darkest depths of sadness, And not for hope of high reward, For Thine own sake, O Light divine, So long as life is mine.

1. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, And His righteousness. And all these things shall be added unto you! Allelu, alleluia!

2. Ask and it shall be given unto you, Seek and ye shall find, Knock and the door shall be opened unto you, Allelu, alleluia!

3. Man does not live by bread alone, But by ev’ry word That proceeds from the mouth of the Lord, Allelu, alleluia! Text (sts. 1-3) and Music: © 1972 Maranatha! Music. OLD TESTAMENT Amos 5:6-7, 10-15 [ESV] (Seek the Lord and live.)

Seek the LORD and live, lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel, O you who turn justice to wormwood and cast down righteousness to the earth! They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth. Therefore because you trample on the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

For I know how many are your transgressions and how great are your sins—you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate. Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time, for it is an evil time. Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. “Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

PSALM Psalm 90:12-17 [ESV] (We have joy and gladness in response to the Lord’s Compassion.)

L So teach us to number our days C that we may get a heart of wisdom. L Return, O LORD! How long? C Have pity on Your servants! L Satisfy us in the morning with Your Steadfast Love, C that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. L Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, C and for as many years as we have seen evil. L Let Your Work be shown to Your servants, C and Your Glorious Power to their children. L Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands

upon us; C yes, establish the work of our hands! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the

beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

EPISTLE James 5:13-20 [ESV] (We pray to the Lord in faith.)

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. My brothers,

if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

❖ HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10:17-22 [ESV] (Seek treasure in Heaven rather than worldly wealth.)

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. And as He was setting out on His journey, a man ran up and knelt before Him and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”

And he said to Him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, Lord Christ.

Where Charity and Love Prevail LSB 845

1. Where charity and love prevail There God is ever found; Brought here together by Christ’s love By love are we thus bound.

2. With grateful joy and holy fear His charity we learn; Let us with heart and mind and soul Now love Him in return.

3. Forgive we now each other’s faults As we our faults confess, And let us love each other well In Christian holiness.

4. Let strife among us be unknown; Let all contention cease; Be God’s the glory that we seek; Be ours His holy peace.

5. Let us recall that in our midst Dwells Christ, His only Son; As members of His body joined We are in Him made one.

6. For love excludes no race or clan That names the Savior’s name; His family embraces all Whose Father is the same.

Life Together, 6: A Prescription for Suffering Alone (James 5:13-20) Series B, Proper 22

On the last Sunday of our 5-week series, we turn our attention to God ministering to us in our suffering through the members of the faith community. We are used as instruments of God’s healing as we visit the sick, pray for one another, confess our sins to one another, and sometimes even lead one another “home” to Jesus. 1. Today, the last Sunday in our 5-week series on the book of James, we find

comfort in God’s prescription to all who would suffer alone and in silence that we are gifted with another.

2. We are gifted with one another through the ________ _____ of doctors and all practitioners of the __________ ____ in our time of need. The prescription for bodily affliction described in Scripture is met, first of all, by those who serve the needs of the body and care for the sick wherever disease and sickness overwhelm (cf. Is 38:21; Jer 8:22, etc.). They are one means for the Great Physician to be at work.

3. We are gifted with one another through the ___________ and _________

____________. St. James is concerned with profound, untreatable illnesses. He notes that healing includes but is not limited to the physical body. Healing of the spirit occurs through the confession of sins “to one another” (16). God even allows us the privilege of “saving” one another through prayer as we call upon His rescue…. no matter whether healing occurs now or on a future day, in heaven. Anointing of the sick with oil is an echo of our first anointing by the water of Holy Baptism.

4. We are gifted with one another through the patience of those who carry our burdens and point us “home” when we ________ ______ the ______. At times the “wounded” are those who have experienced the full weight of human tragedy and have either lost their faith or forsaken God’s will for them. St. James reminds us that the door is always open. God’s rescue through Jesus results in people who seek the lost and are used by God to save them from “death” (20).
