Chapman Soundex Index -- Georgia Population Census 1880 The following introduction originally appeared in a bound publication produced by Roben L. Sonfield, Jr.

(CFA#9 most often referred to, by your editor, as Bob Sonfield). The beautifut printing and binding of the original publication was provided by Chas. P. Young Co. of Houston, TX. The essence of the publication is being presemed here. The introduction has been slightly edited, but all of the index data remains intact.

Soundex indexes were created for the 1880, 100, 1010 and 1920 population schedules. The 1880 Soundex lists only those entries that relate to household including a child 10 years of age or under.

Soundex cards generally give the names, ages, and birthplaces of all members of the household plus state and county of residence, relationship to the head of household, etc. Each card also lists the volume number and enumeration district number of the census schedule from which the information was obtained.

The Soundex cards are arranged by State or Territory with a separate micromm publication for each and thereunder by the Soundex system; Le., alphabetically by the first letter of the surname, and thereunder by a code number representing the sound of the surname, and thereunder alphabetically by first name. The cards giving the names of persons in institutions are usually at the end of a state.

The Soundex filing system, alphabetic for the fIrst letter of the surname and numeric thereunder as indicated by divider cards, keeps together names of the same and similar sounds but of variant spellings. For the name CHAPMAN the index cards is in the "C" segment of the index. The code number for CHAPMAN, worked out according to the system, is C1SS.

Census takers spelled names exactly as they sounded, often creating a problem for the researcher. All names in the following listing have been checked against the 1880 census records by Mr. Mic Barnette, professional genealogist, to insure the greatest accuracy possible, and difficult, unusual, or hard-to-read names have been checked against various published records of Georgia.
