It is probably worth noting that it will cost you, and that if Christianity has come to you without demand or cost there is some chance that it has not actually come to you. But whatever it costs, whatever you must give up, not matter what changes you have to make or loves you have to shun, the joy of being with Jesus is worth that cost. Christianity is not as easy as we sometimes make it out to be, particularly when we are doing evangelism. Talking about the costs sometimes cuts into our sales technique. If we make it sound hard, people won’t want to do it. And its their souls on the line - we need to accentuate the attractive so that people want to buy in. This kind of thing can make us manipulative sales people, rather than those who proclaim genuine good news. Jesus, while not trying to be off putting, has no such qualms with giving the whole truth of what following him will actually mean. Matthew tells us about early in Jesus’ ministry there was a man who tried to call himself to be a follower of Christ. “Teacher,” that man said, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus reply’ seems to be something like, “Oh really? You think so? You think you are up to following me?” He told him, “Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of man has no where to lay his head.” He’s letting the man know that he has underestimated the cost of following him. It won’t all be easy and it won’t all be fun, and without divine help, it won’t be possible. Another man tries to negotiate with Christ. “I will follow you, but first, let me go and burry my father.” It’s possible the man wasn’t dead yet, but wouldn't approve of the choice to follow Jesus, and the man is saying, “this is a cost to high for me to follow you; but once I no longer have to pay it, I’ll come with you.” The reply Jesus gives is one of his harsher statements: leave the dead burry their own dead, and you follow me. Why should there be any cost at all to Christianity? Didn’t Jesus die to free us from costs and burdens? Yes, he did. Jesus paid the ultimate cost and made a way for our freedom where there had been no way before. Even so, Jesus makes it clear that he intends to actually deal with our sins. Not only will we be forgiven, but we will be made free. Sometimes, Jesus works on us in costly, painful ways. He will even show us our sins, leading the faithful disciple to consider his or her own failures, so that we can be free from their influence. That’s what he did to Peter beside the sea in the days that followed his resurrection, reminding Peter of his failure at Jesus’ trial so that he could become a leader again. He might do something like that to you. After all, we all have work yet to do. But its worth it. He never does anything only to hurt us. Everything he does is always and only for our good. And if we get to be with him, it’s worth it. Being with Jesus is a joy that is worth whatever it costs you. - Ethan April 11th
