He called for establishment of IIT, IIM and RUSA College in Rajouri-Poonch area and threatened to raise demand for a separate division for Pir Panjal “if Jammu does not exhibit sense of belonging- ness with the region”. In a statement issued today, Zulfkar demanded opening of Rashtriya Uch- chatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) College in Pir Panjal region, saying “era of alienation is over and we will no more tolerate dis- parity (sic) with Pir Panjal region”. Speaking to deputations of people from across Pir Panjal area, the Minister said: “Jammu province comprises 10 districts in which Poonch and Rajouri are the most neglected. It is not compulsory to open everything in Jammu dis- trict as there are other districts which need to be given justice”. Locals and eyewitnesses said teachers at Government High School Dugrund Bathrie in education zone Batyas of Doda district force students into labour notwithstanding the avail- ability of funds for the mid day meal scheme. “The authorities instead of hiring the labourers are forcing pupils to lift on their shoulders the load of heavy logs of wood for preparation of midday meals,” they said. While talking to this media person, the students said they were asked by the school management to collect the blocks of fire wood themselves, “if we wanted to get mid day meals for lunch”. “We have been ordered to carry fire- wood for preparation of meals. We do not want to work but our teach- ers are forcing us to do menial jobs,” said a student wishing anonymity. Slamming the teaching for forcing the students into labour, the locals have demanded immediate action against the staff. “The government should take action against those responsible for this inhuman act”, said a local resident. CEO Doda Ajeet Sharma said investigation has been initiated into the matter.”A committee of two members has been framed to probe the incident. After the report is submitted, action will be taken against those found guilty”, he assured. 2,400 books damaged, 327 go missing from SRS library Jammu, June 26: Several rare books, the second edition or duplicate copies of which are unavailable in the market, have gone missing from the historic Sri Ranbir Singh Library, an RTI query has revealed. The response to the application filed by activist Raman Sharma also said that five rare books go missing from the library every week."The reply received from the deputy director library revealed that in the past ten years more than 2,400 books have been damaged in the library," Sharma said. 327 rare books borrowed by members of the library, in the same period, have not been returned, the response said. Replying to another question on whether any action was taken against the defaulter, the officer informed that no action has been taken against any such member and their membership has not been sus- pended or cancelled either. The missing books are in Dogri, Urdu and Hindi languages, out of which many are based on the religious history of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions. PTI Kishtwar residents seek reduction in passenger fares TOUSEEF BUTT Kishtwar, June 26: Commuters in this mountainous district have urged the authorities to order reduction of passenger fares in view of ‘decline’ in oil prices. “There has been regular fluctuation in the prices of petrol and diesel in line with the declining oil prices internationally. As such we are demanding decrease in passenger fares too”, said a group of locals, claiming that during last year and a half the fuel prices declined “but so far there has been no reduction in fares of public transport”. “If there is just one rupee hike in diesel or petrol prices, the transport- ers take to streets and demand hike in the fares. We want to know now that prices have gone down, why is there no decrease in passenger fares,” asked Ghulam Hassan, a local, who travels between Chatroo to Kishtwar on daily basis. The locals allege that overcharging by transporters in Kishtwar is ram- pant and authorities are taking no pains to redress grievances of people. “We demand regulation and reduction of fares for taxis, wingers, sumos, matadors, buses and other commercial/freight vehicles also as prices of oil have gone down. The benefit of declining prices should percolate to the grass roots as well”, said another local. The locals also accused the auto rickshaw operators of overcharging particularly in evenings at night. When contacted ARTO Kishtwar, Rajesh Gupta said the State Trans- port department is working on a proposal to cut fares. “The issue is not in my hands and needs to be addressed by the higher authorities”, he said. Mendhar villagers decry ‘unhygienic’ water supply SUMIT BHARGAV Rajouri, June 26: Inhabitants of Kangra Galuta village of Mendhar today staged a protest demonstration against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for supplying ‘unhygienic’ water to the area. Reports said a large number of locals assembled outside PHE office at Mendhar and raised slogans in favour of their demand for supply of clean drinking water. They said that for last two months, the department has supplying unhygienic water to the village which continued in the ongoing holy month of Ramadan. The protesters said that many a time employees of PHE department were asked to correct the problems “but to no avail”. Later the protestors met Assistant Executive Engineer of PHE who assured them that action will be taken against defaulting officials and it will be ensured that hygienic water is supplied in the area. Locals and eyewitnesses said teachers at Government High School Dugrund Bathrie in education zone Batyas of Doda district force students into labour notwithstanding the avail-ability of funds for the mid day meal scheme.

“We have been ordered to carry fire-wood for preparation of meals. We do

not want to work but our teach-ers are forcing us to do menial jobs,” said a student wishing anonymity.

CEO Doda Ajeet Sharma said investigation has been initiated into the matter.”A committee of two members has been framed to probe the incident. After the report is submitted, action will be taken against those found guilty”, he assured.

Kishtwar residents seek reduction in passenger fares

TOUSEEF BUTT

Kishtwar, June 26: Commuters in this mountainous district have urged the authorities to order reduction of passenger fares in view of ‘decline’ in oil prices.

“If there is just one rupee hike in diesel or petrol prices, the transport-ers take to streets and demand hike in the fares. We want to know now that prices have gone down, why is there no decrease in passenger fares,” asked Ghulam Hassan, a local, who travels between Chatroo to Kishtwar on daily basis.

The locals allege that overcharging by transporters in Kishtwar is ram-pant and authorities are taking no pains to redress grievances of people.

When contacted ARTO Kishtwar, Rajesh Gupta said the State Trans-port department is working on a proposal to cut fares. “The issue is not in my hands and needs to be addressed by the higher authorities”, he said.
