A MESSAGEFROM THE PRESIDENT

Having now passed my first anniversary asPresident of the Minnesota Medical Foundation, I have a heightened appreciationof the work the Foundation does. EivindHoff, Executive Director, and Tom Patterson, Assistant Director, have done an excellent job of keeping me informed. Thecopies of correspondence alone overwhelm.

The Foundation offices in Powell Hall buzzwith activity. Financial counseling formedical students is an ongoing service.FaCUlty members are in and out to discussresearch grants. I have had the pleasure ofpersonally handing research grant checksto investigators who express nothing shyof elation over finding support for theirprojects in these times of tight money.

The Foundation has developed a host offriends - students, faCUlty, medical alumniof the University of Minnesota and supporters of medical education everywhere.MMF continues to earn a respected placeon the medical scene in Minnesota.

MMF's fiscal year ended June 30, 1971, isreviewed in this issue of the Medical Bulletin. The statements of income and expenditures don't nearly tell the full story. All of the Foundation's activities are attended to by volunteers, assisted by ourfull-time staff of four.

This has been another banner year of increased service to the Medical School. There is a great deal yet to be done and agrowing responsibility to all of you whohave answered our calls for help. To all ofMMF's friends, I express my personalthanks.

Student Aid

Medical students of the University of Minnesota continue to be a focal point for much of the activity ofthe Minnesota Medical Foundation. For the year endedJune 30, 1971, a total of $109,850 in MMF Scholarships were granted to 133 medical students. The fiveyear picture for Scholarships looks like this:

Year Number of Awards Total Amount

1970-71 133 $109,85070 III 81,50069 85 51,80068 71 39,30067 64 34,200

Students have made good use of other MMF programs, including financial counseling, loans, and researchgrants. In 1971, students again relied heavily on theloan programs of MMF to help them over financialemergencies. A total of 262 short-term loans worth$55,377 were issued last year. None were lost. Theaverage loan was $250 for 90 days. No interest orcarrying charges were levied. Since inception of theEmergency Loan Fund in 1959, 2460 loans totalling$429,065 have been processed.

Research

MMF's total outlay for faculty and medical studentresearch projects in the year ended June 30, 1971,reached $351,410. A portion of that amount, $58,870,was in the form of a 10-year, no-interest loan to helpequip research laboratories for the Umversity's department of OB-GYN.

Minority Aid Programs

When the Medical School began its minority studentprogram three years ago, the Minnesota MedicalFoundation was there to help with $3,000 in aid foreach of two students on the program. The programgrew and MMF provided $26,300 toward its supportlast year, all raised by MMF from outside sources. TheBoard of Trustees of the Foundation has already goneon record guaranteeing a minimum of $20,000 in support of the program for the current year. There arenow a total of 23 minority students in the MedicalSchool.

Career Opportunities in the Health Sciences (COHS)is a special program to draw talented minority highschool students into health science careers. Studentsare given health science counseling by Medical Schoolfaculty and students and are paid a stipend for summerwork in the University's medical research laboratories.A total of 29 students were involved in the programthis past year. MMF contributed $7,110 to support ofthe COHS program for the past year. There is alreadyevidence that the program is successful. COHS startedwith six students. Five of the six were still in the program this past year. One was enrolled at the Universityof Minnesota. Three started at the University this fall. One entered pre-med at Dartmouth on scholarship.

Membership

Centurion Club Memberships ($1 OO-A-Year) accountedfor $35,585 of MMF's income for 1971, compared with$5,900 in 1970. Total membership was down 205,from 1606 in 1970 to 1401 in 1971. However, dollarincome from memberships was up $18,849, from$44,570 in 1970 to $63,419 in 1971, due to the swingto Centurion giving.

CORRECTIONS

Editor's Note:Alas, to err is human and neither the computer nor the laboratory can be faulted. Of course, Dr. Armstrong is right. Insetting the story in type, the order of the tests, but not thevalues, was inadvertently jumbled. To correct reshuffle thetests to put calcium first, phosphorus second and alkalinephosphatase last, as follows:

I will be there in spmt. Impossible to come to Minneapolis at this time. I have retired and am kept busywith hobbies that I missed while practicing.

Phil has become a specialist in physical medicineand rehabilitation. He still is very active, although I dothink he misses the variety hustle and bustle of generalpractice. It's nice in San Diego, but I still miss Minnesota.

Best wishes and have a good time at the reunion.

ABNORMAL TESTSCALCIUMPHOSPHORUSALK PTASE

To the editor:

I wish you would look at page 4 of the last issue of theMedical Bulletin. The contrived results for plasma calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase of a simulated patient are given along with the normal range ofthese three items in the plasma for patients of the ageand sex of the illustrative case.

Unless I am very badly mistaken, the computer hasbadly slipped, or else the laboratory which reported theresults is entirely undependable. It is possible that theresults for the alkaline phosphatase and phosphorushave been interchanged, but I do not understand theblood calcium value of 115 with a normal range of 15to 95.

I have been teaching for wrong circumstances withrespect to the normal plasma concentrations and enzymeactivities for these many years?

Yours Sincerely,W. D. ArmstrongProfessor and Head,Department of BiochemistryUniversity of Minnesota

MMF COULD BENEFITFROM PRESSURES OF1969 TAX REFORM LAWThe stringent regulations on foundations under the Tax Reform Act of1969 are forcing many smaller private and family foundations to liquidate and transfer their assets to larger eligible institutions. Other privatefoundations may need to increase their contributions to public charitableorganizations in order to maintain their foundation charters under thenew tax laws. The Minnesota Medical Foundation has been approved as an eligiblecharitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service and is classifiedas a public foundation. If you are a principal in a private foundation and are considering termination, we suggest that you consider transferring assets to the Minnesota Medical Foundation. Or, if your foundation must increase itscontributions this year because of the new tax reform act, we wouldappreciate your thinking of the Minnesota Medical Foundation and itsgood works. Also, if you know of other private foundations considering termination,we would appreciate your mentioning the work of the Minnesota Medical Foundation.

WHERE THERE'S A WILLTHERE'S A WAYThe making of a will is the most important single step in your estateplanning. A will is essential if you wish to control the ultimate distribution of your estate. If you have not drawn up a will, we suggest you doso. If you have a will, we suggest you examine it periodically to see thatit reflects your current thinking on the distribution of your estate. We also suggest that your will include a bequest to the Minnesota Medical Foundation, to benefit medical education and medical research atthe University of Minnesota.Larger bequests can create a permanent memorial to honor the donor.

If raising money for a good cause is really like pulling teeth, that mightexplain why Dental School Alumni have been outshining Medical SchoolAlumni in building a $100-a-year membership club.

The Minnesota Medical Foundation, which operates solely for the benefit ofthe Medical School of the University of Minnesota, has 325 Centurion Clubmembers at this writing. Many of those aren't even alumni of the MedicalSchool, but rather interested faculty members and friends. We are verygrateful to our Centurion Club members. We just think there should be moreof them.

The Dental School Alumni "Century Club" now has 500 members "andcounting." Expectations are for 700 members.

Should Medical School Alumni do less?

The Minnesota Medical Foundation has set its 1972 goal at 500 CenturionClub members. We've switched to a calendar year membership program tofacilitate your year-end giving for the greatest tax benefit.

One of our Centurion Club members has pointed out that federal tax creditsbring the cost of a Centurion gift to only 14 to 18 cents a day for theaverage physician. Pennies for progress!

Please join the Centurion Club today. You may use the form attached.
