NEWSLETTER27 JULY 2018 | VOLUME 42 NO. 22 TERM 3 - WEEK 1 - 2018
Principal and Attendance Awards: Congratulations to all students who received Awards this week at our College Assembly. Principal Awards recognise student effort and achievement whilst Attendance Awards commend consistency and commitment to being at school. It is important that we publicly recognise sustained effort in all that we do at the College.
Student Success: Congratulations to Hayley Slocombe from Year 11 who competed in the Queensland Wheelchair Tennis Open that was held in Brisbane during the school holidays. Hayley was runner up at the International Tennis Federation tournament and we congratulate her on her fantastic achievement.
URGENT HELP NEEDED – COLLEGE CANTEEN
Dear Parents and caregivers – we have experienced a significant drop in the amount of parent support in
the canteen this year as the result of some long term families leaving the College, and as a result we are
struggling to meet the student canteen demands on a daily basis. I therefore appeal to any parent, grandparent
or caregiver who has some time and is willing to help out in the canteen to help alleviate this situation. It
is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in the College and it would be a great support to our Canteen
Manager, Cathy Rogan, and the students. Please contact Julie Fletcher at [email protected] if
you would like to help.
Feast of St Ignatius LoyolaThis Tuesday 31 July, we celebrate the feast of St Ignatius Loyola. He was born in 1491, one of 13 children of a family of minor nobility in northern Spain. As a young man Ignatius Loyola was inflamed by the ideals of courtly love and knighthood and dreamed of doing great deeds. But in 1521 Ignatius was gravely wounded in a battle with the French. While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola experienced a conversion. Reading the lives of Jesus and the saints made Ignatius happy and aroused desires to do great things. Ignatius realised that these feelings were clues to God’s direction for him. Over the years, Ignatius became expert in the art of spiritual direction. He collected his insight prayers, and suggestions in his book The Spiritual Exercises, one of the most influential books on the spiritual life ever written. With a small group of friends, Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. Ignatius conceived the Jesuits as “contemplatives in action”. This also describes the many Christians who have been touched by Ignatian spirituality.

It was great to see so many students receive a variety of awards at the College assembly this week. There were awards presented for Principal’s awards, Sporting awards, Art awards, Literacy awards and Certificates for 100% Attendance for Semester One. The fact that
more than 60 students received a Principal’s award, and more than 80 students received a 100% attendance award, was very pleasing.
I would strongly encourage students to be handing in their merit cards so that they can receive their Coordinator and Principal's Awards. This is especially the case for Year 12, as their remaining time at the College is limited.
The Merit System affirms students who strive to achieve personal excellence in many areas of College life and within the wider community. Merits are intended to recognise effort and may be given for such things as academic achievement, high standards of behaviour and uniform, sporting achievements, service to others, honesty and participation. There is an abundance of opportunities for students to earn themselves merits.
Year Coordinator's Award
• When students have collected a set number of merit cards they are eligible to receive a Year Coordinator’s Award.
• Students apply to their Year Coordinator to receive the Year Coordinator’s Award.
• The Year Coordinator’s Award is usually presented at a Year Group Meeting.
Principal's Award
• When students have collected a set number of Year Coordinator’s Awards they are eligible to receive a Principal's Award.
• The Principal’s Award is usually presented by the Principal at a special whole school assembly.
• In order for Year 12 to qualify for a medallion, students must have received at least one Principal’s award in Semester one.
I look forward to seeing more students rewarded for their achievements at future College assemblies.
Internet Safe Education The second of two information evenings for parents, organised by St Patrick’s College Sutherland and made available to parents of Bosco College, is taking place in a little over a week’s time.
It is a presentation by Brett Lee (Internet Safe Education) on enabling your child to utilise the internet in a safe manner. It is being held in Rice Hall at St Patrick’s College, Sutherland on Wednesday 1 August at 7.00 pm. An information brochure, with an outline of the presentation and how to register your attendance, is available here.

ASSESSMENT DATES FOR TERM 3 WEEK 2 – 30 JULY - 3 AUGUST
The following assessments are due in the upcoming week:
CREATE A STUDY TIMETABLE Make yourself a study timetable and include your commitments to sport, fitness, friends and part-time work. Display the timetable for you and your family to see. That way they know when they are expected to be quiet and when you need their support.
THE SYLLABUS IS YOUR FRIEND For each subject use the syllabus to make detailed notes on every dot point. Use textbooks and other references to prepare your detailed notes. Refer to these notes and highlight key points. Construct mind or concept maps so you have a visual view of a topic. Each time you review these notes use a different highlight colour. Create flash cards as a tool to revise.
HAVE A STUDY BUDDY Plan study sessions of about one hour blocks. Discuss sections of the syllabus with your buddy. Teach each other the content from sections of the syllabus. Ask one another difficult questions and review multiple choice questions. Change your study zone - "same, same" is boring and you may lose concentration. Study at a cafe, local library, in the park.
AT HOME Study where there is good natural light. Have a space where you can study without distraction ie. internet, TV, music, mobile phone. Keep your desk organised. Make sure you keep yourself well supplied with healthy food and drink lots of water.
PRACTISE EXAM TECHNIQUES Complete past papers in set time limits is an ideal way to prepare for exams. Check answers and sample answers at the NESA website. http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/Understanding-the-curriculum/resources/hsc-exam-papers or http://arc.bostes.nsw.edu.au/go/hsc/std-packs/
IT'S TOUGH Allow yourself to say study is tough, sometimes tedious and repetitive. Give yourself a day off every so often so you are revitalised. Be prepared to work.
YOUR HEALTH Keep up your sports, go for walks with earphones on, listen to study notes you may have recorded or music you enjoy. Ensure you are sleeping 8 hours per night. Eat healthy meals and snacks.
ASK FOR HELP Parents, teachers and friends want you to do your best, and want you to be happy and healthy. Exams are challenging and while a little stress can be a good thing, if you are feeling overwhelmed, talk to someone.

Year 7 and 8 Visual Art | Ms Allyse Miskle
NAIDOC Week is held every
year in July and celebrates
the history, culture and
achievements of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Years 7 and 8 Visual Art
students have created
this artwork as our way of
acknowledging and celebrating
this key event, and embracing
this year’s theme 'Because
Of Her We Can' to inspire our
own collaborative artwork.
Students created their own
symbols to represent women
important in their lives and
painted those symbols onto
leaves as our way of connecting
to this land, cared for by the
Dharawal speaking people.
The leaves have been stuck
together in year groups, linked
by song lines, a symbol used by
Aboriginal elders, communities
and artists to show the sharing
of knowledge over generations
and the creation story for a
particular tract of land.
Sutherland Shire Schools' Public Speaking Competition - Second Round Heats | Mrs Kathleen McKimm
On Wednesday, 25 July, Samantha Swat and Emma Mills of Year 10,
and Madisson Guthrie of Year 8
represented the college in the
Sutherland Shire Schools’ Public
Speaking Competition. Forty
students from many different schools
around the Shire attended the second
round of the competition at St John
Bosco College. Students presented a
3-5 minute prepared speech and then
gave a 2-3 minute impromptu speech
on a topic for which they only have
3 minutes preparation time. The level
of maturity & sophistication in the
speeches made for a tough decision
for the professional adjudicators.
A big congratulations goes to Emma
Mills on making it through to the final
on Tuesday 7 August at 6.00pm at
Sutherland Entertainment Centre.
Emma’s prepared speech had the
theme of “Who’s my neighbour?”
as she reflected on the connections
we all make in our society and
how sometimes prejudice and
ignorance can get in the way of us
understanding each other, forming
relationships and allowing each and
everyone to shine & live life to their
full potential. Emma spoke with
poise, intellect and integrity in a well
formed speech. We wish her all the
best in the final. Good luck Emma!
Emma Mills, Year 10

SENTENCE STRUCTURE MADE SIMPLE
Sentence structure is incredibly important, but it is also incredibly hard for some people to understand and analyse. Most of us don’t think about the structure of our sentences when we speak and write; we construct them unconsciously. But if we want to improve our sentence structure, we have to become conscious of how sentences are put together.
The following method of describing sentences is not an “official” approach, however it is simple enough that it works for just about anyone. (It’s especially good for people who never understood traditional grammar in school and still don’t!)
All you need to remember for this Simple Sentence Structure System is that a sentence is made up of several different parts: the main parts; the lead-in parts; the in-between parts; and the add-on parts.
The following sentence will show how the different parts of a sentence fit together: “On a bitterly cold winter morning, Malcolm Maxwell, a young man of simple means but good intentions, left the quiet country town in which he’d been raised, and set off on the bold errand he’d been preparing for all his life.”
(1) Main Parts. These parts usually contain the main action of the sentence: “ … Malcolm Maxwell … left the quiet country town in which he’d been raised …”
(2) Lead-in Parts. These parts lead into other parts, often the main parts: “On a bitterly cold winter morning …”
(3) In-between Parts. As the name implies, these parts go in between other parts. They feel like a slight interruption: “… a young man of simple means but good intentions …”
(4) Add-On Parts. These are extra parts that convey additional information about any of the other parts and are usually used to make things more specific: “ …and set off on the bold errand he’d been preparing for all his life.”

The young are the delight of both our families, and our
communities, and have a very important place in our parish. We celebrate their faith through their sacramental journey;
they are the life and focus of our parish schools; their energies and initiatives play a vital role in many of our parish
activities and ministries.
Sadly however, we know that the innocence of the young has not always been treasured and protected in our communities.
The Royal Commission has taught us many lessons, the most fundamental being that we must ensure that this never happens
again and we need to do all we can to find ways to prevent it.
