Honors Summer Math Camp Support Annual Report FY2017Research

Siemens Competition Results

Fourteen teams (44 students) worked on research projects inthe 2017 Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC). Nine of theseteams (26 students) were named as semifinalists in theSiemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Oneteam was named the Regional Finalist. Second and third-yearstudents in the HSMC work on original research projects eachyear mentored by Texas State Faculty. Semifinalist researchprojects were:

Residential Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMCR)

The JSMCR is a two-week camp held on the Texas Statecampus. This camp is for rising 6th through 8th gradestudents. Applications will open in late December. For moreinformation, follow this link to our website.

Research Activities

Ongoing research from 2016 JSMCMathworks faculty and graduate students are currentlyexamining a promising model of professional developmentthat brings together prospective and practicing teachers toreflect and analyze teaching practices following daily sessionsof Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC). Another group isinvestigating the facets of student summer experiences at theHonors Summer Math Camp (HSMC). Both ongoing worksinclude faculty mentoring doctoral students in themathematics education program in the MathematicsDepartment.

Activities from previous JSMC to appear in MTMSTwo activities enacted in the 2015 Junior Summer Math Campclasses will soon be in the National Council of Teachers of

Mathematics (NCTM) journal, Mathematics Teaching in theMiddle School, which has a readership of over 28,000. Thearticles were co-authored by Mathworks faculty andmathematics education graduate students.

Research in Productive Struggle citedThe research of Mathworks faculty, Hiroko Warshauer, wascited in Taking Action: Implementing Effective TeachingPractices, a series of three books for grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12educators. The books also utilized the Productive StruggleFramework that she developed. Support of ProductiveStruggle is an important part of Mathworks Guiding Principlesand is also one of eight effective teaching practices included inthe NCTM book, Principles to Actions (2014).

Mathworks at San Marcos Fall Festival

San Marcos CISD hosted the fall festival at DeZavalaElementary school in late October. Mathworks was among themany groups that set up math-centered games and activities. Dr. Terry McCabe, Patty Amende, and Katty Zied attendedthe event to promote the summer math camps and play mathgames with the students.
