Topic: Endangered Species of Africa
Discuss with your group and record an answer to the following question:

Go Geography!

You will work in your shoulder pairs to
complete an African safari project. You will both get an outline map of Africa. Use the population density, elevation,
physical, and political maps of Africa from your world atlases and textbook.
Use the various maps to complete the African Safari tasks and record the correct answers on your sheet.

You will create a Public Service Announcement telling
people about an endangered species from Africa… Each pair to will get to pick one endangered animal
found in Africa, south of the Sahara. These endangered animals include: 1) rhinos, 2) African elephants, 3) lions, 4) giraffes, 5) mandrills, 6) oryx, 7) gorillas, 8) African wild dogs, 9) cheetahs, 10) chimpanzees, 11) bongos, 12) zebra, 13) geometric tortoises, 14) leopards, and 15) cape mole rats.
You will determine where the animals live, the type of vegetation found in this area, and reasons why the animal is endangered.
You should also place a symbol on your outline map to represent their chosen animal’s habitat location.

Special Powers- If you had the power to change one thing
about the continent of Africa what would it be? Explain your answer.
Problem Solving- How would you solve the issue of possible extinction faced by animals in Africa, south of the Sahara?
Alternate Viewpoint- Imagine you are a poacher. Why should the government allow you to continue poaching animals?
What If ?- If global climate change was not an issue, would so many animals in Africa still face extinction? Explain your answer.
Next- Several African countries have begun practicing ecotourism. Is ecotourism the wave of the future to save endangered animals? Explain your answer.

Use your Map from the Safari and the G.O.s to
determine the location of these species.
Which region(s) appear to be the most impacted by endangered animals?
Compare and contrast these affected areas (what they have in common, what is different about these areas).
What are the major similarities and differences in the causes of endangered animals?
