People are not property. We cannot exchange them at will or
simply use them for our own designs and purposes. What does
the word “commitment” mean to you? We can begin to
understand its meaning by looking at some synonyms: dedication,
devotion, allegiance, loyalty, faithfulness, fidelity, and bond.
Commitment is primarily about relationship, and Jesus is all about
relationships. How our lives affect others, how we treat our
brothers and sisters, how we resolve conflict, and how we view
the vows of marriage. Jesus’ teachings on obeying the
commandments, murder, reconciliation, marriage, divorce, and
adultery all stem from the sacredness of commitment. All of this
has a God connection.
We can easily see one another as interchangeable and
dispensable. We treat so much of our lives this way. What works
today may not be what I want tomorrow. We search and search
for the right thing only to find our hearts still restless in the end. Is
real happiness achievable this side of the grave? Sometimes we
expect too much out of others and want our relationships to fill a
hole that we must figure out how to fill ourselves. Any seasoned
married couple will tell you that their love for one another changes
as time passes. Even though the understanding of romance
changes as life changes, the dedication, devotion, allegiance,
loyalty, faithfulness, and fidelity all remain and even deepen.
Some relationships can be hurtful, and God does not want us to
live with abuse or pain. Also, how a relationship develops is
sometimes out of our control, and we become the victim of
someone else’s decision. But we can’t be self-focused in our
relationships and see them exclusively as self-fulfilling ends. We
are companions on life’s journey with varying depths of
relationships being enjoyed by all who are with us along the way.
We have the freedom to choose. God asks us to do so wisely,
with right judgment and thinking.

Everyday Stewardship
You could buy a meal for a person who is hungry or for a person who just ate a feast. You could spend time with a lonely person or with someone who has more friends than you. You could step forward to join a parish committee that your experience and knowledge can help, or you can join a ministry where you will constantly struggle to figure out what to do. All of the above actions involve you giving and sharing yourself and your gifts. But not all of these actions will bear good fruit.
If a sower sows seeds only on rocky or weed-infested soil, nothing of great value will grow. But if that same sower plants his seeds in rich soil, then the harvest will one day be great. In all of the soils, the seed is being sown, but it is not the act of sowing that is the most important factor.
In living a stewardship way of life, we must discern how best to share our gifts. Discernment needs the Holy Spirit and a desire to follow God's will, not our own. Our own desires and misconceptions can cause us to use our gifts unwisely. The more mindful we are of how, when, and why we are sharing ourselves, than the greater the impact for God's glory. God wants all of you, but not in a way that is without understanding and discernment. He wants you to shine as a light to the world through your stewardship just as He came to you as the Light of the World in baptism. You can't shine brightly if the match does not hit the wick. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Theology in the County - at the Warehouse in Caribou (Ages
18 & up, up, up)
Theology in the County provides an opportunity for Catholic fellowship in
a casual forum where adults (ages 18+) gather for challenging and
relevant presentations on our faith and how it applies to daily life. It
gives adults the opportunity to network with one another and be part of
the larger Catholic community that extends beyond their Parish setting.
Each session will begin with a social followed by a presentation given by
a guest speaker and time for an informal discussion and Q&A.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVE!
Dear Friends,
In November, Bishop Deeley attended his Ad Limina visit in Rome. This
visit is mandated of every bishop in the world by law which states that
“every five years there should be a meeting in Rome between the
Bishop and the Holy Father”. The ad limina visit has a twofold purpose:
to make a report on the state of the diocese and to be a time to renew
the spiritual commitment with Rome by being reminded of the fact that
our diocese is united with the universal church
I wish to share some of what was presented to the Holy Father. For the
next few weeks, I will place excerpts from section 23 of Bishop Deeley’s
Quinquennial Report which is entitled, “General Assessment of the
Diocese and Outlook for the Future”.
Part 1:
In my first five years in Maine, I have come to know the strengths and
challenges of the diocese. The number of people practicing their faith
has declined during the years of this quinquennium. And yet, those who
do practice and maintain the parishes of our diocese, led by their
dedicated priests, are a true Christian witness. Before saying anything
about the challenges we face, it is important to see the good that is here.
Over time, beginning in the early 1900s, Maine has progressively
become a more secular state. With that rise in secularity, there has also
been an emphasis on the individual and the personal rights of each.
With its call to serve the common good and Christian charity, the Church
in Maine, almost as a counterculture, continues to seek ways in which
this service to others is best provided. It furnishes a reminder to the
prevailing culture of the importance of caring for each other and not just
for self. There is a real commitment to bringing the joy of the Gospel to
others in the myriad ways in which the Church does that, from assuring
that the Eucharist at the Table of the Lord is celebrated to providing for
the tables of the frail and poor elderly in Aroostook County in rural
Maine, where fresh food is made possible by a farm maintained by
Catholic Charities Maine.
More on this next week.
Blessings,
Fr. Dave

consist of Soup & Ployes. Entertainment will be
provided. Come celebrate before Lent !
Dear Friends,
We are about to enter one of the most Holy Seasons of the year. Now is the
time to prepare by asking ourselves certain questions; How do I want to be
during Lent this year? More quiet and thoughtful? More open to God’s
desires? Better able to sit with people who need me? More attentive to sacred
readings, whether in church or in private? Do I need to be more
compassionate toward my own fears and failings? Do I need to become more
courageous about using the gifts God has given me?
Notice that none of these questions asks us to give up anything. Instead, how
about taking on a discipline of spiritual growth? How about leading or joining a
small faith sharing group? We have several groups whose times and places of
meeting are listed in the bulletin and on our face book page and website.
If you wish to lead a sharing group of friends and neighbors, which you can in
church meeting rooms or in your home, please contact one of the parish
offices in Caribou 498-2536 or Presque Isle 768-3671. If you want to join a
group, watch for the schedule of times, dates and locations in the bulletin,
facebook page or on our website. Fr. Dave
HOLY HUMOR ~ The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large tray of apples. A nun lettered a note and posted it on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching." Moving along the lunch line, at the other end was a large tray of chocolate chip cookies. A girl wrote a note, which she put next to the tray of cookies, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."
