BEARING WITNESS TO CHRIST IN PUBLIC OR PRIVATE…

On Tuesday, many people around the world will remember a day when terrorism struck vio-lently and atrociously in the United States. Tues-day, Septem-ber 11, 2001, or simply 9/11 as it is

widely known, is a day that has sadly gone down in history. Even those among us who are too young to remember it have surely heard about it and learned of its significance. It is an anniversary to be remembered and the people in-volved to be prayed for: be they those who were killed, their families, those who were injured, those who now live with a greater degree of fear – and also those who brought this horror to reality. We can remember them all in our prayers.

There are two sides to this story and they ought to be re-membered today. The first side is to say that those respon-sible for this horror were people who went about their business in secret. No one else was aware, no one else was expecting what was about to unfold.

The other side is those caught in this atrocity, either on the planes involved or in the targeted buildings; we may know something of how they responded and the messages of love they poured out in their last moments. But there is so much that we can never know.

As we hear the Gospel today, we are privileged, as we know something that is going on in the story, while others who were nearby at the time were excluded. Reading or listen-ing to the Gospel, we learn what Jesus was doing in private; we are very close to Jesus and ministry. It is not often in the Gospels that Jesus works miracles and wonders in secret; usually he teaches the crowd openly by his actions and ex-ample. The Gospel is teaching us today that, like the Lord, we can work miracles and wonders in secret.

Jesus recognizes the terrible position of the man who is deaf and has a speech impediment, how he is viewed by the population and suffers rejection by being held at a dis-tance. Jesus refuses to allow this situation to continue. He beckons the man and calls him to him, so that the two of them might have a moment of privacy.

It is here, at this moment, that Jesus touches the man and

makes all the difference in the world. Imagine how the man must have felt. Imagine hearing yourself speak clearly for the first time. Imagine being able to hear for the first time after years of muffled noise or complete silence. This is the experience of the man in the Gospel; this is the difference that Jesus is able to make. No one and nothing can stop Jesus acting, either publicly or privately.

Jesus is a wise teacher, teaching us by every way possible. In this Gospel he is teaching us that there is no single way in which we have to do things as Christians. Often we may feel that to be a faithful follower of Jesus we need to speak and act openly and publicly; some of us may find that a very difficult thing to do.

Today’s Gospel points to the fact that this is not always the most effective way. There are many occasions in our lives when we can be powerful witnesses to Jesus by what we do in private, without anyone else knowing what is done. These are the often unseen ways in which we show love and care for those in need: the visit to a person who is sick or housebound; the welcome we offer to someone who is lost or lonely; the generosity to the homeless person whom everyone else ignores; the constant love with which we support our children. All of these may bear quiet yet faith-ful witness to Christ.

Let us remember today the people of 9/11: those who were victims and those who were perpetrators. Let us think about the enormous amount of love that poured from the victims and from around the world as people watched in disbelief. As we do so, let us resolve to live as people of love in all things in our lives, with Jesus as our guide and our example.

May Jesus show us the way, a way that sometimes is very public, but other times is done in secret and in silence.
