Reasons for leaving:› Wealth› Religious freedom
They settled on Atlantic Coast The places they settled and the
different geography contributed to social, economic and political diversity in America.
The 3 Regions There are three colonial regions New England (NE)- shipbuilding Middle- religious tolerance Southern- Plantations
Types of Colony Ownership
Royal› Governed directly by the king
Proprietary› King granted ownership to an individual
who tries to make money off of it (Lord Baltimore).
Charter› King granted the right to govern
themselves
The First Colony
Jamestown-1607 Founded by a joint-stock company called Virginia
Company The group wanted to get rich by selling products, and
raw materials The colonists had to overcome bitter winters, disease, and starvation with the help of Native Americans
Religion Anglican Church-
Official church of England
Refusing to follow the church was treason
People who disagreed with Anglican church came to America
Puritans
Were not Anglican Came over to establish a pure church
