PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Alf’s Infantry Alf Chink, the official Applewood Probus Captain of the Walk, was so persuasive in his presentation at our last meeting that I bestirred myself on the bright and sunny morning of May 21 to join him and a dozen or so others for a six-kilometer trek in the Cheltenham-Terra Cotta region of Peel County. Alf has been enthusiastically guiding Probus members and their wives or guests on such excursions regularly for the past seven years and shows no signs of slowing down. As he points out, that adds up to about 1,000 kilometers up hill and down dale, and a small army of participants is just that much fitter for having marched along. Alf’s Infantry includes Bill and Glenna Armour, who have rarely missed a hike since the beginning. “We’ve been out when it was so cold Alf and I were on our own. And one time when he couldn’t make it there was just my wife and I,” says Bill. Indeed, this band of walkers tends to laugh at weather extremes. “We’ve only been rained out once, and it’s been as cold as -17 and as hot as 34,” Alf says. His favourite hiking route? The Island Lake trail in Orangeville, where there have been some recent improvements, and which quite possibly will be on a coming itinerary.

Alf plays down the time and effort that goes into being the perennial walk-meister, but it is nonetheless significant. Early on, it involved checking out trails for their degree of difficulty, though after seven years of hiking, most in the region are now familiar. “It’s an aging group,” he concedes. “You have to bear that in mind in picking the routes.” With that in mind, a recent and popular innovation has been to invite walkers to limit their participation to half the route if they are so inclined. The ranks were a little thinner than usual this particular Thursday because of a coincidental theatre outing. However, it included no fewer than four first-timers, who could – if initial enthusiasm remains intact – become future contenders for the coveted WOTY, which goes annually to the Walker of the Year. That enthusiasm was fortified at the nearby Spirit Tree Cidery, where a variety of tasty beverages complement the menu. As ever, the talk over lunch turned to Toronto Maple Leafs and their new $50-million man, Mike Babcock. The wary consensus: he might turn them around in time, but don’t bet the farm.

— Don Hendry Nominating Committee Our Nominating Committee is now working assiduously on your behalf. After spending many long hours working into the dark of night, sifting through the extensive lists of members, their outstanding qualifications, the contacts and networks they have established, resumes, etc. etc. I am happy to say that several members have already been approached and have agreed to help. This will allow the club activities to continue to entertain and provide fellowship that is our mandate. However our work is not yet done we have replacement for most of the Activities Convenors except Billiards, but are having less success in filling the positions of Speaker Coordinator; Member Coordinator, and Activities Coordinator Remember that the work for these positions is designed so that they only require the investment of a couple of hours a month. In fact for some, once the setup is complete they require even less time than that. So if you can help, please let either myself, Bill Armour or Garry Jenkins know. - Doug Johnston

Speaker at May Member’s Meeting

Six Nations culture and history

Poet and author Pauline Johnson managed a delicate balancing act between the worlds of her Six Nations people and non-aboriginals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Her life and legacy in the context of Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) culture and history were illuminated at the May 14 meeting by Heather George, who is cultural curator at the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.

Among Ms. George’s principal roles is that of curator for Chiefswood, Pauline Johnson’s childhood home.

Built between 1853 and 1856 for

Pauline’s father, Six Nations Chief

George H.M. Johnson, Chiefswood was

the Johnson family home until his death in

1884.

Johnson was prominent socially and

politically, serving as official government

interpreter, thus bridging both the British

colonial and First Nations worlds. He built

his home on farmland he purchased

along the Grand River. While not the only

mansion built by First Nations families

during the nineteenth century,

Chiefswood is the only one of such a

grand scale and architectural

sophistication known to have survived.

"We are trying to make sure when we're telling the family's story, that we balance the two sides ‒ the mother's European values and beliefs and the father's Mohawk values and beliefs," Ms. George says.

Her presentation included a reading of one of Pauline Johnson’s moving poems.

BIO – Chris Dodd

Chris Dodd was born in Nigeria, as his father was the Police commissioner for a province there. The Ibo people of the area gave him an additional name that translates as “son of one who rules the earth!” Chris says that you’d think that with a name like that he would be a better golfer! Chris' father's jobs with the Canadian Company Alcan took the family to British Guiana (now Guyana) and later Jamaica. At the age of 10, Chris moved to Canada where he saw snow for the very first time and learned how to play football, baseball and street hockey. Chris went to Gordon Graydon high school, where he was lucky enough to meet his future wife. Chris then went on to the University of Waterloo for a BA degree, played on the varsity rugby team, and then went to Toronto Teachers College, while playing rugby for the Toronto Barbarians.

Over the next 11 years he taught grades 1 to 8 and took a Masters of Education degree at U of T. In the 80’s, he helped teachers with program implementation before being promoted to vice principal of Dixie Public school then to principal. Over 13 years Chris was principal of 3 Mississauga schools - 7 years were at Tomken Road Senior. The teaching calendar also allowed Chris' family time to travel through 9 (and counting) home exchange holidays with a family in Europe. His shortest exchange has been 3 weeks to Dublin and the longest 5 weeks near Lake Como in Italy. In June Chris will do a 10th exchange - this time to Lyon in France. In 2001 Chris made the decision to retire from education and start a second career as a financial planner. Chris attained the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation and worked for Dundee Wealth as an investment advisor, helping 180 client families plan for their future. In 2013, Chris retired again because many of his retired clients were having too much fun travelling and going south for the winter and he wanted to do the same. Chris has been married now for 43 happy years and has two adult daughters, a tall son in law and a grandchild on the way. Chris thanked Guy Baker for encouraging him to join Probus and so far Chris has enjoyed participating in the many various club activities Brian Howitt

A Look Back - From the Apple Core December 2010

Probus Mixed Bridge 2010 Wind-Up Party Probus mixed bridge for 2010 ended with a pot-luck lunch, bridge and prize-giving party at Jane and Paul Moore’s home on November 28, 2010 with 17 of our 23 couples in attendance. First prize (and trophy) went to Fred Durdan as the top aggregate scorer this year. Runner-up prizes for aggregate high scores went to Grace Garland (second), Fran Boyd (third), Elsa Bedell (forth), Deanna Collinson (fifth), Pat Posno (sixth), Liz Durdan (seventh), Carolyn Chataway (eighth), Mary Gilpin (ninth), and Doug Gilpin (tenth). The Durdans won the prize for the couple with the highest combined scores. We also awarded a prize to the player who had the lowest score in any one game during the year. There was a tie. The winners’ names are being withheld to avoid further embarrassment. Paul Moore won the prize for the highest score for bridge at the party and John Spence won the prize for the second highest score for that day.

Doug Johnston Book Club Report: “The Cellist of Sarajevo” At our May 6 meeting, the PROBUS Book Club discussed “The Cellist of Sarajevo.” The book is a 2008 award-winning novel by Steven Galloway, who teaches creative writing at the University of British Columbia. It is set during the 1992-1996 Siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege of the 20th century, when bombs and sniper bullets of the Serbian Army rained down from the hills and terrorized the people of what had been the beautiful capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The novel is based on the real-life story of a cellist who took his instrument into the street to perform Albinoni’s Adagio in G Minor every day for 22 days to commemorate the 22 people who were killed by a bomb while waiting in line to buy bread. The book was selected by the Toronto Public Library as its “One Book” for the Keep Toronto Reading Festival in April 2014. During the month, cellists from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra performed the beautiful Adagio in 22 pop-up concerts around the city in unlikely places like the top of the CN Tower, the St. Lawrence Market, and BCE Place. Our discussion talked about the way in which peaceful communities can rapidly descend into ethic conflict, the determination of ordinary people to carry on with their lives when faced with the most horrendous fear and misery, and the ability of music to provide a glimpse of humanity and inspire hope in the midst of terrible darkness. With the exception of two members who found the book depressing, the book received a positive response for both the story and the writing, with an average score of 8 out of 10. Additional Reading Suggestion: “All the Light We Cannot See,” by Anthony Doerr – this year’s Pulitzer Prize Winner -- suggested by Marcus Miller.

The Walkers May 7/15 - 22 walkers eventually found parking and off we went. The blossoms were in full bloom this sunny 14C morning. Beside the horde of people we saw black crowned night heron, merganser, mallard, red winged black bird, Mute swan, cormorant, painted turtle, house sparrows, starlings, Caspian tern, red bellied woodpecker, wood duck, robins, purple grack, mourning? butterfly, dragon flies, squirrel and chipmunk. The walk was just over 5 km and many stayed for lunch.

Alf Chink

May 21/15 - There were 14 walkers, including 4 first timers, on our 6km walk along Caledon Trailways in the Cheltenham/Terra Cotta area. It was a beautiful sunny 18C morning. All had lunch at Spirit Tree Cidery accompanied by some of their interesting ciders. Some visited the Badlands on the way home. Our next walk is June 4. Take care and hope to see you then.Alf Chink

Supper Group B Tuesday May 26th supper club B enjoyed a nice dinner at Jac's Bistro. Jac's is located on Kerr St. In Oakville. It is French/Italian and has a nice varied menu. The decor is very pretty with bright turquoise chairs in a white and black setting. We enjoyed beef, sea food, chicken and pastas. Warmest day so far this year so it was nice to not have to cook! Ken and Jeanette Hubbert

Supper Club E The May gathering of Supper Club E was held in the Wine Room at Michael’s Back Door in Clarkson on the Lakeshore on May 20th. All members were present and accounted for – Tom and Cam McAuliffe, Ron and Ruth Ormiston, Mike and Maureen Pawson, Reg and Alison Perkin, Norm and Gail Rutenberg, Ron and Nancy Schramm and Don and Barb Taylor. Ron Schramm Supper Group F Eleven of us met at Solstice for our April outing. As usual, the conversation was non-stop and covered everything from holiday travels to local issues. Most took advantage of the 3 course $29.95 specials and commented on the good value provided. Participants included Grace & Cy Garland, Gail & Bill Jones, Andrea Kawchuck, Annaliese & Herb Mai, Sybil & Rod McLeod, Diane & Paul Walters. Recommended. Rod McLeod

Supper Club F The Jones’s, Kawchuck’s, Garland’s, Mai’s, McLeod’s, Walter’s and Mark’s enjoyed a very nice evening at the Open Cork on Dundas, just west of Hwy 427. The location was a compromise between Etobicoke and Mississauga. The food was delicious with large portions at a reasonable price. Our server Umberto was humorous and added to our enjoyment of the conversation. The seafood linguine specialty had a Rose sauce that made the dish to die for. The size of the servings were large enough that some of us had a tasty lunch at home the next day. The surroundings were quiet as we had the room to ourselves. The chairs were suitable for a living room, large, well-padded and comfortable. It was a good thing the conversation was very lively and loud, or we would have had trouble keeping some members awake. [No names will be given.], although it seemed the golfers were particularly tired from so many strokes the day before. We had a full turn out and a great time was had by all. Paul Walters

Supper Club H

On Thursday May 28th, members of Fred and Liz Durdan's group dined at Thyme Restaurant on Lakeshore. (Jim Wilkinson's favourite restaurant). The hosts of Group

"H" - Ian and Helen McCreadie. Eleven diners attended: Liz & Fred Durdan; Keith & Mary Foster; Peter & Lorna Jones; Stew & Mary MacGillivary; Al & Marilyn MacLean; Ian McCreadie, Victor & Mary Fornasuer, Helen McCreadie and Dianne Stevens were unable to attend. Everyone present had a good time. They all agreed Thyme Restaurant was an excellent choice. Our waiter Ranny was most attentive and his humour added to the fun evening. The topic of conversations was as varied at the menu. The menu covers from Italian to Thai and the food was delicious.

Ian McCreadie Wine Group 2 Group 2 wine tasters met at Reg Perkin's new home, a 14th floor condo at The Fairways on Dixie Road South, on May 13, 2015. The usual cast of characters were all present --Bryce Atkinson, Michael Davies, Victor Fornasier, Mike Pawson and Don Steen. We were joined by Neil Paget and Doug Gilpin to make our group of eight. To challenge our taste buds were six Shiraz/Syrah wines, each from a different country. Rated #1 was Small Gully Mr. Black's Little Book Shiraz 2013 from South Australia.

1 Small Gully Mr. Black's Little Book Shiraz

5 Liberty School Syrah 2012 California $18.95 942383

6 Jackson-Triggs Shiraz 2012 Canada $10.10 637710

You will note that Group 2 are too clever to be fooled by the inexpensive Canadian "ringer" rating it # 6, despite the fact that the LCBO guy said it was the best Canadian Shiraz. As always, the stories and jokes were first class, and a good time was had by all. Reg Perkin
